Bears Name Practice Squad

Interesting that Freeman still hasn't been named to the PS. And if you know how Lovie works, you know his practice squad is in a constant state of flux during the season.

Bears sign QB Brett Basanez to practice squad
One spot open in case team needs to make another roster move

The Bears signed seven players to the practice squad Sunday, including Northwestern and St. Viator product Brett Basanez. But one spot remains open in case the Bears need to make another roster move.

Basanez, the third-string quarterback during the preseason, could be promoted if the Bears need him in an emergency. Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie are the only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

Leaving one practice squad slot open gives the Bears the flexibility to add another player, such as a veteran running back, to the active roster. They would then have to assign an inexperienced player to the practice squad.

Fifth-round pick Marcus Freeman, a linebacker from Ohio State, figured to be a candidate for the practice squad but hadn't heard from the Bears as of Sunday evening. Tackle Cody Balogh and linebacker Kevin Malast also were candidates after being released Saturday.

Also signed to the practice squad were guard Johan Asiata, defensive end Ervin Baldwin, defensive end Joe Clermond, center Donovan Raiola, fullback Will Ta'ufo'ou and cornerback Woodny Turenne. Baldwin and Clermond give the Bears insurance with only three defensive ends on the active roster.

It may be that Freeman's agent is seeking out other opportunities before signing on. It is strange that one spot is left open.

Interesting. Didn't think we needed another tackle, but at 6'8" 310lbs, he's a big boy! Young too. Maybe we could work him into being a backup RT next season.

Former Third-Rounder on Practice Squad
by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, September 7, 2009 at 5:01pm ET

James Marten Profile

After filling seven of the eight spots on their practice squad Sunday, the Monsters of the Midway completed the process Monday by bringing in former third-round draft pick James Marten.

Marten, originally selected by the Cowboys in the 2007 NFL Draft, is a native of Indianapolis and played his college football at Boston College. Among his Eagle teammates were third-year guard Josh Beekman and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year this past season. After being waived by Dallas before last year, Marten signed with Oakland and made his professional debut Sept. 21 but was inactive the final 14 games.

With seventh-round tackle Lance Louis making the 53-man roster ahead of veteran guard Dan Buenning, Marten is the only offensive lineman on Chicago's eight-man practice squad.

Eh? I thought center Donovan Raiola was on the PS.

....... Marten is the third lineman to join the practice squad. The Bears also signed center Donovan Raiola and guard Johan Asiata to the eight-man developmental squad. The team is carrying eight linemen on the 53-man roster.

It's good that we're carrying 3 O linemen on the practice squad since we've only go 3 backups on the active roster including one 7th round rookie.

Freeman is about to sign in Philly to their PS.

Glad to see Turenne will get a chance to stick. Dude is raw but has some nice potential. James Marten is not worth the investment--think about who let him go and why they would do that given their needs....

FYI John Broussard stuck to the Lions practice squad.

Agreed. Plus it possibly shows the Bears know they need to develop some OL since it is aging. After Williams, Beekman, and Omilaye (sort of), we're old. Time to develop their replacements. Although, also would like to see some more drafting.

Maybe he got cut cause he couldn't run a 4.4 40? :)

Agreed. We should take an offensive lineman with our first pick next season. :giggle:

We should take Jay Cutler.

It's gonna be weird not picking until 64th next draft. :)
