But it was clear after a few series that the play-calling was tailored to make it easy on Barkley and get him through his first start unscathed, physically and emotionally. The strong-armed freshman rarely was asked to throw under pressure from the pocket, instead rolling out for safer throws.

what's the surprise? usc lacked depth at qb. carroll flipped out when sanchez left early for a reason. that left corp and barkley (and mustain but i don't think carroll trusts mustain, who btw was a real idiot for transfering to usc). corp got hurt which just left barkley.

Wait until he faces real competition. Opening against San Jose St. is about as powder puff as you can get without dropping to book an FCS team to open (and yes I do realize that is exactly what the Beavers did with a start against Portland St...and no I'm not happy about that).

^ I thought USCs O-line made Barkley look decent last night. He was having trouble but they kept bailing him out. I think the kid is good and expect him to have a really good college career.

He's better than Jimmy Claussen was after two games at Notre Dame. I like his footwork and his fundamentals on his delivery, very polished.

Jimmy Claussen didn't have the team Barkley has around him right now.

Jimmy Claussen didn't have Joe McKnight to bail him out.
