Navarro a possibility for PG?

Post#1 » by crazyeights » Thu Sep 10, 2009 11:44 pm

Per wiretap:

The Memphis Grizzlies have withdrawn their qualifying offer to guard Juan Carlos Navarro, making him an unrestricted free agent, Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced on Thursday. In his only NBA season (2007-08), Navarro averaged 10.9 points and 2.2 assists in 82 games and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. After his rookie season, the 6-3, 170-pound guard signed with his former Spanish club F.C. Barcelona. Memphis now surrenders the right to match any future offer should Navarro decide to return to the NBA. In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, in order for a team to retain its right of first refusal with respect to a restricted free agent, the team must tender the player a qualifying offer prior to June 30.

What do we think of bolstering at the PG position and our Spanish connection? I know we've said we don't have any money but isn't there always the LLE/Vets Min?

Either way, what do you guys think of his game coming off our bench?

He just signed with his spanish club, obviously he wants to be there over here. Love to have him, but we have no money, and he's not wanting to come here.

Rather invest the playing time in Jordan. Got to see where his future leads before going in a different direction.

He could be an option next summer aren't he a Pau best friends or something. ANd looking at the PG market next summer he's like one the 5 best UFA's he's better than Blake or Duhon.

Navarro is so good its just ridiculous

Foreign players need a system to play in... thats why he didn't do well. Certain players can't function properly on losing teams. The players have little direction and try to do too much. Juan is the game manager we need!

Brown isn't likely to opt out unless he has a crazy impressive yr he wont put up enough numbers in a 3 pg rotation to demand more than 2 million a year.
I think Navarro is very likely to be a Laker in 2010 because he and Pau are best friends I mean he left a premier euro team playing in second best league in the world to join the Grizzlies. He left because by the end of the season Pau was traded and the Grizz had gone into full rebuilding mode. The only problem would likely be the buyout its probably pretty big.

every time i watch him play for spain or barcelona he kills. i agree with enlightenment, in the right system he'd kill. i'd love to have the lakers get him next season.

whats his contract/buy out status?

Getting him would be our second best option to getting Hinrich

Gasol was our second best option to getting KG and that seemed to work out ok!!!

VIVA LA SPAIN!!! Its just natural for Spanish player to play in a town called Los Angeles.

Dump a salary deep on the bench and tell Pau he needs to bring his best friend and favorite teammate that didn't win him a championship home

That's nice and all, but he can't play defense because will defeat the purpose of getting a PG.

The defense will probably the only thing holding him back from joining the Lakers. But its more than likely we won't get HInrich after him the UFA PG's next summer aren't that great unless the Lakers can convince Felton if he takes the 1yr qualifying offer this summer to sign for the Mle next summer after Felton the next best guy is Blake between Navarro and Blake I would go with Navarro. This could all be pointless in the end we don't even know if he wants to come back to the NBA he's making 4 million a year in Spain he wont make that much in his next NBA contract if he comes back.

When we didn't pick up Carney and he signed for 800,000 I gave up on adding a player.

No need to invest playing time in Jordan, his future is with another team. End of this thought.

You wouldn't want him at PG, a great SG backup though. Plus, he will probably get more money in Barcelona than you can offer him here.

He might next year. I don't know how much he cares about the nba but if he does like the U.S. and the nba then winning a championship with his buddy Gasol would probably be enticing.

If he does return to the NBA, i think he'd most want to play in LA out of any other team. Big market and he gets to play with his buddy Pau like he was supposed to back in Memphis, but this time on a big-time contender along with the legendary Kobe.

I usually totally dismiss topics like this, because honestly most of the time people are wasting their time thinking of different players we could sign or trade for when we clearly don't need them and it would be an unrealistic situation. But i could honestly see Navarro being a subject of discussion next off season..you guys are right, in a good system and on a contending team, he will be a very effective player. His situation in Memphis was just terrible and it's no fault of his own that he didn't find success.

He is the difference if Fish gets old or loses a step.

You are only as string as your weakest link on the court.

The Lakers should have been chasing him from day 1 of the off-season. He would be perfect in the triangle. Ron Harper 2.0!

Yeah, i'm a fan of Navarro's game. He is a great shooter with 3pt range, and he seems to do well moving off the ball. He also isn't afraid to take it to the rim when the opportunity presents itself and his floater in the lane is beautiful. Would be a good triangle point guard if he improves on defense a bit.

Return to Los Angeles Lakers
