A Question About David Robinson

Not that he would, but could he come back and play?

I'm watchng NBA TVs tribute to HOFer David Robinson. He left in 2003 after his second championship, and at 37, almost 38 years of age. At that time, he had long taken a back seat to Tim Duncan but was still a very capable rebounder and defender.

After six years away from the game, and now at 44, I'd bet D-Rob's still as good as Mutombo was last season, prior to being injured with Houston. I would guess he's better than Theo Ratliff. I remember Kareem playing well past age 40 with the Lakers.

Seems like this Spurs team has everything it needs to battle the Lakers with the possible exception of one big man to help Timmy defend.

So, my question is yes or no: Do you think Robinson could play 10 or so minutes for this Spurs team in the playoffs?

What if Robinson got in tip-tip shape and came back just to be on the playoff roster?

D rob to this day still looks like he is chizzled out of stone. Reminds me of kevin willis. I think david could still play but unlike alot of stars he realized when his time had passed. More importantly he had something to turn to outside the game....his family.

That's really hard to say. I mean, if we're talking tip-top shape, then a lot of HOF bigs can come back and play 10 minutes a game. Hakeem, in tip-top shape, should still be able to give 10 good minutes. Karl Malone can still give an elbow and hit jumpshots and if he's in tip top shape, he'd have no problem playing 10 minutes a game. This apply to a whole lot of former superstars IMO. Problem is, at their age, it's not likely they'll be in tip-top shape.

How old is he? 43? Kareem was still going at that age, but he's obviously an exception to the norm. And to be fair, I never saw Kareem play, just hightlights - so I don't know how great he ever was, let alone at the tail end of his career.

D-Rob kept himself in fantastic shape when he played, but I highly doubt his body could stand up to the grind of an NBA season at this stage.

I love how he went out though - a solid contributor on a championship winner. Can't ask for much more than that as a pro athlete.

Ya me as a Laker fan wondered why he retired so soon. He had so much more to give. I actually had a lot of respect for him. He was a dominating force and by far one of the most classiest players to ever play the game. Very humble, very classy and so much love for the game.

Its funny O.P I was watching the Dream team games on NBA too and I did wonder why he left so soon.

Tony, thanks for your service! (I'm assuming you mean Iraq as your location--if not, I'm unaware of civil unrest in Iran).

My wife was deployed twice to Iraq, and would be back over there now if not for her retiring soon.

Right now, I've got close friends in both Afghanistan and Iraq who I am praying for every day.

I appreciate the sacrifices of you, and your brothers and sisters in arms.

Maybe he could play an occasional 10 mins in a game if he got himself in shape. But this is one of the best ever, HOF'er, very unique and special guys to play the game. What does he have to gain from busting his butt and risk injury just to maybe play an occasional 10 mins?

I'm glad he went out like he did, that's how it should be. Jordan should have left for good after that second threepeat, still holding that hand up. Robinson did the right thing walking off with that trophy.

No. I love Dave but he was done in 2003. He was having a lot of back issues and there's no chance he would be able to keep up with the 82+ games of the NBA season.

I disagree. He was done as a top tier player but could still have gone on like Mutombo did.

I dont want to derail this thread, so I'll make it short.

Na Chocolate, my location is actually Cali, southern cali, but I have proudly served in the U.S Army 3/2 ACR as a tanker, driver loader and gunner 19 kilo for 4 years.
As far as my brothers and sisters in arms. Im actually a mixed mutt, Im Armenian from my moms side and as far as my dad his mom is Arabic and his dad is Greek, yet my father was a civilian in Iran working for the U.S as a mechanic and a tech on the F-4 Phantoms so I was actually born in Iran and my family came back to the states for good about 31 years ago. So I still have a few family members in Iran as well as a lot of friends that are fighting in Iran for their freedom and democracy, but ya there is actually a big revolution going on there at this time and a lot of young men and women are dying for their freedom and liberty from these Mullah dirt bags that have destroyed Iran well over 30 years.

Ya unlike other players (Favre) he did go out on top of his game, and you cant blame him for it. He got what he wanted from this game and he walked away on top. Props to him. Like I said probably one of my favorite Spurs player of all time. He's a very good role model as well as gentelmen and a soldier and he is definantly a H.O.F in my book. SO how can you beat that?

Exactly. Perfect end to a great career.

As for his HOF speech, it was pretty good (concise, unlike MJ) except I could've done without the bible quote at the end. I understand he's one of those religious types, but I thought it was a bit preachy toward the end. Plus I think he was wearing his suit inside out.

They said Stockton gave the best speech. I haven't watched Stockton's yet. Can't find it on Youtube. Can't believe how long Jordan's speech thou and he touched some pretty weird topics such as the Freeze out. And then he tell stories where he wasn't allowed to play and that at the time the Bulls focus was getting more ping pong balls and that's where he talks about tablets and headaches and stuff. I mean he touched a lot of stuffs that probably hurts other's image if it was true (and I doubt it's a lie either).

And yeah, Robinson sounded preachy toward the end. Did anyone saw what Vescey said? Sounds like funny as hell but I can't find the video either.

I thought it was good. He was funny and gracious and quite touching in parts (he talks about his mother who passed a few years earlier).

MJ's speech was pretty awkward. He seems pretty bitter despite all his accomplishments.

Vescey has no place in the HOF. He's a POS.

His religious , he has a strong faith in God and he is a believer. Nothing wrong with that. He is blessed by God and he shared a part of his testemony for others. I actually liked that and I give him props for what he said.

Well I don't know about TK, but I'm an atheist. Don't believe in god so I did feel David's ending was a bit preachy. But that's me cause I'm an atheist. A friend of mine (a strong christian) absolutely loved it and told me that ending actually made it better.

Religion is always a touchy subject (one of the reasons why I'm not a fan).

If religion works for the people that need it, more power to them. But what I don't like is how religious people always seem to be trying to convert others. I was watching his HOF speech and just waiting for the part where he talked about God, cause I knew it was coming.

I get that it's a part of who he is, fine, but he should just save that stuff for church.
