Urlacher out for the year/Derrick Brooks talk

What are the chances that two NFL players would have surgery for the same injury? Pretty good if it's a dislocated wrist. That's exactly what happened with Dre Bly of the Detroit Lions and Derrick Gibson of the Oakland Raiders. Both had surgery this week for dislocated wrists. Who would have thought you could dislocate your wrist?

Actually, it's a pretty common injury for defenders in the NFL. Look at the bones (check out the picture on the left. Click for a larger look.) in your wrist, they look pretty sturdy, right? They are, but they are also flexible. This wrist flexibility is what allows the dislocations. The purpose of your wrist is to allow movement of your hand and fingers. Without a wrist you'd be unable to turn your hand or move your fingers. When you dislocate your wrist you're actually knocking on the wrist bones out of position

Sounds like a month-long injury. Fun, fun, fun.

GREEN BAY -- Brian Urlacher recently talked about how the Bears escaped the preseason without too many significant injuries. Well, the same can't be said about the regular-season opener.

Urlacher was one of several Bears knocked out of Sunday's game with an injury. The linebacker and defensive captain left in the second half with a dislocated right wrist and did not return. Sources said he is expected to have surgery early this week.

He was wearing a wrist guard when he returned to the sideline to cheer on his teammates.

Urlacher, who was playing well before the injury, was the second starting linebacker to go down. Newcomer Pisa Tinoisamoa left early in the first quarter with a right knee injury. He walked to the locker room under his own power.

There was also speculation from a packers beat writer that Desmond Clark left the stadium via ambulance. Didn't see anyone mention that. Thought I would throw it out there....

I just heard on the radio ESPN is reporting Urlacher is gone for the season.

Brian Urlacher likely out for the season with wrist injury
Vaughn McClure wrote:Brian Urlacher appears to be out for the season after dislocating his right wrist, the linebacker said Monday. The team has not given the official word, but Lovie Smith is expected to address the issue during his afternoon press conference.

Urlacher injured his wrist in the first quarter of Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Packers. He was ruled out after halftime.

When asked about his status Monday, Urlacher said in a text message that his ``season is over.''

Gone for the year, ouch! Tinoisamoa out 2-3 weeks per Sirius NFL radio too.

I wonder how long before the Bears wait to put him on IR, if they do at all. Wrist surgery is a toughie, could be just 8 weeks, could be 20.

Brooks was TERRIBLE last year, just can't run anymore. There's a reason he isn't on a team already.

Chris Draft is available and knows the defense, and he's decent in coverage. Matt Wilhelm is probably the next best option after him, and he's been cut twice this year already.

an absolute devastating blow to the defense. unreal. i am in shock right now. waves of depression are hitting me....life as a chicago sports is filled with so much heart break -- sometimes i wonder if it's even worth it. i can so emotionally involved in the bears, cubs, and bulls.....it's so painful.

As stupid as it sounds, Cliff Levingston is the same way. Urlacher was a beast out there in the first half, finally looking like his old self and this has to happen. The football gods may end up hating the Bears this year since teams aren't supposed to be able to trade for franchise QBs.

The defense still only let up 99 yards in the second half. 50 of those came on one play. Against one of the best offenses ever according to pre season football. There's still talent here.
