The Season: '09 Jays

EDIT* Shameless plug on the title. I thought using the name of a discontinued Blue Jays program would be just right.

Just a little hack job collection of headlines throughout the 2009 Toronto Blue Jays season, that pretty much tells the entire story of what transpired during what was and will be another unsatisfying campaign. Not all is bleak though. Aaron Hill is locked up for a few more years, Adam Lind has stated that he wants to play his entire career in Toronto, Romero and Cecil will just get better, etc. So lets all reflect on what has been a roller coaster of a season as it comes to an uneventful conclusion.

Of course, the headlines don't do justice of what is actually inside the threads itself, but you get the point.

Good work chocolateSensi. It's definitely been a roller coaster but I don't think any serious Jays was expecting much better than the current record, even with the hot start. It was always going to be a down year in preparation for competing in 2010. Now, we don't know. We have no clue where Rogers Blue Jays Baseball Partnership plans to take this team because they won't tell us!

The February "we're going to spend in the draft" announcement was followed by a great draft followed by a botched signing day. With a hot start came a quick and steady regression. With a beloved player's manager came his ridiculously bad in-game management. With the talk of increasing payroll by "$20-40M" next year came their cheapness on signing day, putting Doc on the block, trading Rolen, Rios, and giving all indications of a rebuild. I have no clue what's going on with this team and I don't expect to be given an explanation either.

On the topic of payroll, there's a Jeff Blair article in today's Globe and Mail where the CEO of Rogers was talking a bit about payroll and there are some statements by Blair indicating that Rogers is willing to go as high as $120M (though Beeston turned that down and said "money alone won't help this team," apparently), but seemed less willing to go to $150M, most comfortable around $100M.
