What's the word on Mardy Collins?

Post#1 » by BadNFluenz » Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:34 pm

Hey guys. Just registered. So could me anyone tell me something about Mardy Collins? I know he was in NY and is bout 6'6 and all that stuff. But I saw only 3 games from last season (I'm from Germany), and don't know much about how he actually plays and acts on the court. I think he is above average defensively but i'm not sure, so pls sb tell me about him.

Thank you.

You are correct that he's above average defensively, but that's mostly just a result of the effort and hustle he gives on the court. For the most part he is just an average player who is dependable and reliable. At best he is a 2nd or 3rd string backup player, and he's not really a true point guard or a shooting guard. He's not the quickest or skilled player, but he will protect the ball, run plays, and set up other players. He's does not particularly excel at anything, but also is not bad at anything (except maybe free throws). As for how he acts on court, he's usually mild-tempered, but he was involved in the brawl fight with the Nuggets when he was on the Knicks, as he gave a hard foul to J.R. Smith which triggered the brawl.

IMO, I love Mardy's game. He does many things well. I kind of see similarities to Andre Miller. Collins is basically a big PG (6'6). His strengths are handling the ball, setting up the offense and passing. His defense is better then I thought, especially after he locked up Pierce last year. However he has a very little range on a jump-shot that is inconsistent, which is his main weakness.

Mardy is a guy that I like having on the Clippers because he knows his role, and when he gets playing time, he works hard. Last year he showed some good moves near the hoop and good defense. IMO, he is the perfect backup who can play either guard position.

He's solid. Some have given him the position of rover because he can play 1-3. He's an above average defender. He's not as good or flashy a passer as Baron, but he is a smart passer (takes less risks) that knows where to put the ball. His shot was inconsistent. If he was hitting early, then he was very likely to keep looking for his shot. He had a nice run last season when Baron was out. Although Mardy initially looked like a filler in the Randolph trade, he was a nice addition to the team.

Thanks guys. Do you expect major improvement, especially on his jumper? Any knowledge what Dunleavy thinks of him or how he is used?

I don't expect any improvement but if he does improve on his jumper it'll be a nice surprise.

Hopefully, but shooting is definitely not his forte. Mardy could ball tho! 8-)
