Carney did, however, take an audible deep breath when he was asked about his reaction to the Timberwolves' declining the final option on his rookie contract. Had the Wolves invoked the option, his salary would have jumped from $1,655,760 to $2,539,936. Instead, his new salary for a player credited with 3 years of service is $855,189. "It was a big downer," Carney said. "I thought I showed through my ability what I could bring to a team . . . I guess it worked out for the best, because I'm here. [It wasn't a good time] for free agents, with the recession and everything."

I can't even fathom living off of 850k a year. Thats enough to live a swanky lifestyle, but BMW 7 series swank, not Maybach swank. Totally unacceptable

Not counting taxes Carney is making more then I will in 15+ years, so I am not feeling bad for him or any pro athlete that is making half what they would have made. Pro sports needs this setback (recession) because ticket prices and salaries are getting way out of hand.

I could also say that his salary last year is 30+ years of my current salary. So again I do not feel bad, for his few months of unemployment.

Too bad for Carney but with today's economics I think many players in the future will be in the same boat as teams won't be as quick to pick up the options on rookie contracts that can get expensive by year 3 or 4. Teams won't be able to afford to carry and develop young players at the end of the bench for 4 years while they learn to play in the NBA. After all the expense to develop these players, alot of them ultimately move on to other teams who reap the benefit.

I'm really tempted to take a video camera down to the basketball court, film myself, and through the wonders of video editting and youtube turn myself in the most hyped prospect since Sidd Finch, then refuse to workout like Rubio, and hide from everyone like Jon Brockman until my agent inks a deal for me.
