Clippers Re-Sign Brian Skinner

The Los Angeles Clippers today re-signed unrestricted free agent forward Brian Skinner. Per team policy terms of the contract were not released.

In 51 games played with the Clippers last season, Skinner averaged 4.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 16.5 minutes per game. Over his 11 year NBA career, Skinner has tallied 4.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 18.3 minutes per game.

On June 30th, the Clippers announced that Skinner had decided not to exercise his player contract option for the 2009-10 NBA season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Skinner was originally drafted by the Clippers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1998 NBA Draft.

I don't get it. Couldn't we do better than Skinner? At least take a flier on a young player with potential? Is Skinner any better than Madsen? I guess you can't expect much as the 14th guy on the roster, but whatever.

Strange signing. I actually thought Skinner played very well when he got minutes last year but I would much rather sign a 2 guard than another big who is just going to take away minutes which could otherwise go to DJ.

Well, seeing the history of injuries with our Centers, this is not a terrible signing. If Kaman & Camby go down, we'll have DJ with Skinner backing him up. Has Skinner ever been hurt before? He is like an iron man.

Surprising that he's back. Didn't he decline a player option or something? I have no problem with him coming back since he played some solid defense when he got his minutes. I'm sure he'll be 4th on the depth chart behind DJ and 3rd behind Smith. Although he should get some minutes ahead of DJ at times for matchup purposes since we still got Dunleavy around.

I think we got some nice depth all around this time. Just gotta see if Ricky stays healthy this season to back up EJ.

This was an unexpected signing, but I do understand it. After we dropped Madsen, I thought that we needed another big man (although I wasn't expecting anything out of Madsen to begin with). Kaman and Camby are not pillars of health. If one or both of them were to go down, then we'd be extremely small at center. I just hope that Skinner is used in more of a last restort type role as opposed to stealing floor time from DJ.

We still need a combo imo. If Baron is out any significant amount of time, we're left with Telfair, Collins and Gordon to handle point duties.

Am I the only one who thinks this could be a precursor to Kaman or Camby possibly being moved? I mean, Dunleavy generally carries 14 on the roster, which is where we stand with Skinner being singed, and he generally goes with 3 point guards as well (does he really trust Collins to be the emergency Point?).

I hope Skinner doesn't take PT away from DJ. I actually would be shocked if he did.

On another note, we should bring back Mike Taylor!

Let's not forget Blake is only a rookie. The Clippers can't exactly count on him yet for an automatic 82 game season. With a rookie in Griffin and the brittle Kaman and Camby, adding a tough big man like Skinner is a good insurance policy. However, the Clippers are still very thin at PG. I wouldn't mind if Dunleavy decided to carry 15 players and pick up another player capable of handling the ball.

With the injury history we have I don't think he's bad choice to have on the bench. But I still expect us to sign a guard and the word is that (hoopshype) we're still in negotiations with arroyo.

Earlier in the summer, Skinner opted out from his contract with the Clippers. Although he re-signed for equivalent money, L.A. gets the better of the deal with the league covering approximately $527,000 of his contract.

This season, the NBA reimburses for any salary over $825,497 for veterans on a one-year, minimum deal. Had Skinner not opted out, the Clippers would have been on hook for the full ~$1.35 million as the league subsidy doesn't apply to multi-year contracts.

Call me crazy but I actually thought Paul Davis was a solid player. Not great mobility but he has nice size and a good mid-range jump shot.

I much would have rather carried Mark Madsen then Brian Skinner. In the end, it's a wash and a cost saving move for the Clips at the end.

I'm sure that's the reason why he was brought back. He came back cheap this time.
