Frye Creating Mismatches In Phoenix

Post#1 » by statisback » Wed Sep 16, 2009 10:32 pm

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic writes that Suns big man Channing Frye could create offensive mismatches this season.

The team has been taking part in voluntary workouts and traditional centers have had a hard time defending Frye, according to Coro.

If defenders leave Frye open on the perimeter, he's comfortable hitting a jumper. In addition, if defenders rush out to pressure him, he has the explosiveness to blow by them.

So who are these traditional centers that are guarding him??

Joe Klien or Robin Lopez?

When Frye is able to hit his jumper, he's a dangerous offensive player. Not much of a rebounder, OK and D, and, yes, he's only had 1 good season (his rookie year), but don't sleep on Frye. He could be a nice player for you guys this year, and one hek of a bargain at what you're paying him.
Go Knicks!! Go Mets!!

As for the Jets . . . just keep it entertaining.

actually, tho he was probably playing against garbage, this is really encouraging. i never really thought about it this way, but frye COULD be a really good center this year. remember when Shaq tried to guard david lee? he was horrendous. a center with such a good jump shot is valuable- think of how good amare was at center.

Our C might as well be a 6'6' guard with a nice jumpshot if all he can do it make a jump shot and nothing else. No way Shaq could guard him.

This team will ONLY be good if Frye can play the Diaw role creating mismatches. In addition, Jared Dudley needs to be a mop-up, Marion-style player with his versatility and defense.

If they're those things, SSOL will work properly.

i absolutely hope the suns start frye, if nto initially then soon after. its like betting on 13 or smth i think its the only chance for the suns to win big.

-edit actually i was thinking make amare D up on C's. it's contract year he has to pretend to like it. or who cares the suns will just let the other team score everytime but amare will get 10 and-1's and suns will win by 7 every game

lol Haven't we already tried to get Amare to D up on SOMETHING or SOMEONE? He just won't do it.

I think for him, contract year means, 28ppg 7rpg 2blks.

Contract year means he rebounds less with a worse front court partner?

Contract year to him means to show our FO he can do what he does great, even better. Scoring.

True, but even so, if we lose Shaq and don't get 10+ rebounds from Amar'e (especially if we hope to fuel the run and gun) we will be hurting pretty badly. I don't see Frye, Lopez and Lou even combining for more than 12-15 rebs.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't pick up that 1 or 2 extra rebounds left by the other guys to push his RPG up to double digits. He did average something like 9.8(?) with Trix so I'd definitely would like to see him grab 10-11 this season.

We had this exact same story in Portland this time last summer. Basically this story means Frye is hitting his 18ft jumper/3pt shot with nice consistency in scrimmages.

I love Frye and I think he'll actually be a decent fit for you guys, but don't expect to see any great rebounding numbers out of him. Expect to see more of the same, Frye taking open jump shots.

Don't forget that scoring really doesn't have that much to do with rebounding. Most rebounds come on the defensive end where there is no chance of scoring. If Amare has more of a desire to score, as you are all saying, he should be picking up more offensive rebounds a well. Without Shaq there really should be no reason that he won't be getting more rebounds. He's now the biggest rebounding presence on the court for the suns. His numbers will naturally increase.

Channing Frye is like Marion. He'll create some issues with matchups and open up these 5s on Amare to let'em blow by. It'll be wonderful..
