When the Kings practice, who guards Tyreke?

Post#1 » by King Baller » Sat Sep 19, 2009 5:54 pm

Hey guys I was looking at the Kings roster thinking about the upcoming season. With lots of practice coming up I was thinking about defensive assignments during practice. Who is going to defend Tyreke Evans? Which NBA vet is going to teach Tyreke what he can expect to see?

I'm not too sure. During practices, anyone can be guarded by a lot of people. But I would assume that both Tyreke and Martin would go at each other various of times. Both are tall for their respective positions and are considered the best pieces going forward, team-wise.

Garcia , Beno and Martin.

I'd put Garcia on Tyreke because Garcia's athletic, strong and quick enough to relatively keep up as is probably the best player we got to help Tyreke learn how to fight down tough defenders.

Beno is quicker and should help Tyreke learn to play against quicker guys - when he got beat by BJennings in the Milwakee summer league game.

Martin is about Tyreke's sizeish, and they should both learn every aspect of each others offensive game.

Mason would probably be a good one size-wise as he is pretty strong. Tyreke will mostly go against players much smaller than he, but he should also get used to bigger players.

If all goes as planned I think the first team is obviously going to be Tyreke/Kevin/Noc/JT/Spencer so I would think the second team will be Beno/Mason/Greene/Brockman/May. I see Mason guarding Evans a bit here and there.

^^Ehh, I think Casspi would move in at SF for the second team, moving Donte to PF, and pushing Brockman out.

Edit: Oh yeah--and Cisco is in there instead of Mason obviously.

Is he healthy? I thought he hurt his fingers or something. I figured he'd be out for training camp since that's typical Kings luck, if not, sweet, Mason goes up to the 3 and Greene gets pushed out.

I was under the impression that that injury wasn't a big deal. I guess that might be wrong though.

No big deal in Kings land usually means "no longer than 3 months".

I don't remember hearing anything one way or the other in solid concrete, hopefully he's fine and will be ready, but training camp is coming up pretty quick.

Yeah, it just occurred to me that Cisco's injury may have been why Mason was (seemingly) so abruptly signed after Geoff had supposedly told Sam Amick that the roster was basically set. But maybe not.

The Kings have lacked a perimeter defensive since Salmons (Noci is a very good interior d but not perimeter d) so they gambled with Mason. Like May if he doesn't work it doesn't matter because we are pretty deep with youth. Like May if it does work they are vets and know what they are supposed to do.

Good point but I think Mason may have been added when Petrie asked who will guard Tyreke... Mason's d in training camp will result in Evans getting picked less in the regular season.
