Who is the toughest Laker ever?

Post#1 » by TonyMontana » Wed Sep 23, 2009 6:00 pm

I have always loved an enforcer on my teams. Someone who has the balls, the power and the game to backup his team and his statements to send out to the opposing team.

When I was a Raider fan it was players like Bo Jackson, Ronnie Lott Howie Long. As far the Lakers we can bring up names like Oorlando Woolridge, Kurt rambis, Rick Fox, Shaq, Fish, and now Artest.

I mean since Fox and Shaq I have never considered anyone else as an enforcer, not even Kobe or Lamar, but now that we have Artest I cant wait till he starts sending out his message and letting teams know that you are going to have to work a lot harder at beating us and think twice about coming in the paint.

I love the offseason energy that he has brought so far.

Ron Artest brings a certain kind of toughness (thuggery?) to the Lakers, something that they have lacked in recent years. Sorry Pau Gasol.

But he is not the first tough player to wear purple and gold. Far from it.

Magic Johnson was tough when his back was up against the wall, much like Kobe Bryant. Kurt Rambis was seen as a player who would go through that wall, while Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal were as immovable as a ton of bricks.

Who were the toughest players to play for the Lakers? There are plenty of criteria to define a player's toughness and we're sure we missed the mark on some and nailed others. So add your thoughts and opinions

Rambis would run through a brick wall to save possession.

Mentally KObe post 2003
Public spotlight w/ rape and hate charges... he had to deal w/ a lot (although he snapped in the 2007-2008 off season so?)

Physically ??? Rambis seemed tougher than anyone. He always got right back up and played banged up constantly.

Fisher's pretty tough for a small guy, it can't be easy taking all of those charges.

You fools don't know shi*, Vlade brought it daily, played through injury, a lock down defender, the enforcer, as well as a two sport athlete. Game over.

It was Kermit Washington hands down. Him and Kareem posed one of the most perfect combinations of finesse and power. Most people don't really even know that the league "made" the Lakers trade Kermit. It's something they tried to keep on the DL for a long time.

This was a front by the league who in a sense maybe pressured then owner Jack Kent Cooke, he thought keeping Kermit was a public disaster. Despite pleas from GM Bill Sharman and coach Jerry West, Washington was traded to the Boston Celtics while still on suspension ( 60 days and 26 games).

No way the league was going to let the Lakers keep two guys who had thrown big punches that injured guys badly. Kareem's punch was a year earlier on Kent Benson.

Washington's jersey still sees action every night.............his number 24 belongs to Kobe.
