Arena Pt 107!

Post#1 » by ICMTM » Wed Sep 23, 2009 5:25 pm

Just to piggy back on the mayor's comments that it's embarrassing the NCAA has rejected its bids for the tournament to come here, and future bids for the next four years. Arco Arena is officially blacklisted by the NCAA.

Who's ready to see the Kings walk?

If they walk. I'll actually be okay with it as long as it's not to San Jose or Anaheim. My preference is they build a new arena is Sacramento, though.

If they have to move somewhere they better stay Norcal.

This may be common sense but I just read that Arco was built as a temporary arena? That is absolutely ridiculous that we don't have one yet! I hope they figure something out. Cmon Johnson!

I think Johnson is reiterating the situation here. It's been like this for years.

I'll cry if they go to Placer Co!!!

That alone will make me want to leave Sacramento all together.

Why? That'd be near ideal. They stay in the greater Sacramento area without having to deal with the majority of idiots that make up the bulk of the Sacramento City legislation.

Because that would make it official! The city is incapable of growth.

It's been official for years. We're no small town, but we sure do act like it. At only 22 years old, I already realize that. KIE and Smills(?) already left this town, I might be next.

If the Kings leave, I'll probably lose interest and stop watching basketball. I'll still love the sport and shoot hoops with my buds, but I just can't see myself rooting for a team of another town, especially if the only other Cali teams left are the Warriors or Lakers. I'll probably lose what little city pride I have left too.

TO be fair, I've left for schooling purposes.

The original Arco was built as a temporary arena back when the team first moved. It was basically across the east side parking lot from the current arena and was only used for the first couple of years. The current arena has been there for 20 years...that's far from temporary. Twenty years is about the normal useful life for a lot of infrastructure projects. Yes that useful life can be extended with major renovations. But that assumes that the original structure was constructed decently. Knowing who built the current building and how cheaply it was built, it's probably less expensive to build a modern, properly designed and constructed structure than it would be to extend the life of the current building.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

I left 15 years ago for reasons that were not really related to Sacramento. I needed a huge change in life direction, was tired of California in general and had always loved the Pacific Northwest. I have nothing against Sacramento and still do have some fond memories of the area. I just prefer to visit instead of live there.

I wish they would go back to the first idea. The basic idea is great--it's just not great that the city pays and the Maloofs get all of the profit.

Building the arena @ 7th and K? It makes sense being that the block is abandoned right now. That was the original pitch IIRC.

The railyard thingy.

And FWIW, I've left and likely won't be permanently going back--for education purposes now, and career purposes later (pretty hard to get into this industry anywhere but LA, unfortunately).

I have to agree with both Smills and Mitch. I am born and raised here in Sac. At 39 years old, I have lived in (in order): Sacramento; Santa Barbara; LA; Sacramento; Lake Tahoe; sacramento; Seattle; Tacoma; Montana (two towns); and back to sacramento in 2002 (when the Kings were coming into their height of contention). I have left each time (except for Tahoe - that was just to work snd ski) for educational purposes and at this point both my wife and I are looking at having to do so again. The small town mentality that prevades this city just doesn't allow for the type of growth that creates options and opportunities. The simple fact that I can not pursue a higher degree in the evening (as well as my wife in IT - I'm Medical) goes to show that this town has a long way to go.

Being realistic, I am a big time sports fan and participant. But the things that people say about the city losing an identity by losing it's team are completely true about the modern state of this country. If they think that losing the NCAA early round games was bad, wait until they stop getting ANY kind of real first rate entertainment stops or anything else.

I think the MAJOR obstacle is the CLEAN-UP and infrastructure required for the railyard(that's where you're referring to, right?). The cost that would go into that, is almost equal to the actual building. That's why I thought the Cal Expo plan might actually work. Build the building there and little else would be needed as most the infrastructure is already in place.

I think there are really no great options for the Maloofs. Build something here that they have to pay some for, no where in Cali is is building anything publically now, and the only economy almost as bad as Cali is Las Vegas. Building something here would be the cheapest considering all the lawsuits of moving.

Infrastucture jobs put people to work. We built the Golden Gate, Hoover Dam and many of our highways during the Great Depression. Heck the Kings had to move to Sac because of the Savings and Loan crisis of the 80s and 2 Arco's were built then.

To make it work it would have to be split the cost and not be too much that we would make back on the investment.

One would think that there is no better time to build since construction costs are so low. However it's a catch 22, even though it's cheaper, for that very reason it's that much harder to get needed loans, investors, etc. to make it a possibility. Nobody was going for the tax hike even when the economy was booming, that's NEVER going to happen, especially now.
