OT: Blue Jays screw over the wrong fan

Post#1 » by Scott Carefoot » Mon Sep 28, 2009 7:06 pm

I know this is about the Jays but I hope the mods don't move this because it's really quite an incredible happenstance. The Jays screwed up a promotion where they were supposed to "randomly" pick a fan from the Rogers Centre crowd and give him a game-worn jersey. The ticket number was announced on the Jumbotron and that fan naturally assumed he was about to receive a jersey. However, that fan found out that the winner was already pre-selected before the game and they gave the jersey to somone else.

The fan that they screwed over just happened to be Dustin Parkes, who runs the most popular Jays blog on the Web, Drunk Jays Fans: http://bit.ly/md3fq

Funny, thanks for posting. I would have never went to the Jays board for this.

Apologies to the mods for the bad language in the original link URL. I switched it to a re-direct link so readers can go right to the blog post.

No problem, I just figured the swear filter was the reason it wasn't working at first.

Great read by the way, Rogers really screwed him over. I hope he doesn't let this go.

Just because the winner was already selected before the game, doesn't mean that the winner wasn't picked at random. I'm guessing they picked the winning ticket ahead of time before the game and then notified the winner to have them go down for a presentation. The winning ticket on the Jumbotron was just a typo.

Even with the typo the right thing to do is still give away another jersey. How much would that cost to keep a fan happy? It's all about fan relations and they failed.

If they were smart, they would have given the other ticket holder a game-worn jersey as well. Problem solved. Instead, they accidently infuriated the most popular Jays blogger on the Web because they were too cheap and/or incompetent to fix the problem. That's karma in its purest form.

I agree, they should have just given out another jersey which costs them nothing or at least another small token. I just had an issue with the point that he kept saying that the lottery was fixed when it probably wasn't.

This is almost too funny. I feel bad for the guy, but I can't stop laughing. I hope for the Jays sake that they come to their senses and make amends.

Look, all pro sports teams do stuff like this including the Raptors.

In 2000 I sponsored a team for $2k into the Raps Bowling fundraiser. They had a (supposed) random draw and my team won the first prize (fair and square) of bowling with Vince Carter.

Well, guess what? The "planted" winning entry belonging to a guy who was a big season ticketholder which was mistakenly not drawn. Long story short .... the Raptors stafff gave me a long, drawn out explanation that I did not really win and that the Raps rep somehow read out loud the winning ticket incorrectly.

Of course it was total BS. So my team bowled with Michael "freaking" Bradley.

Carefoot, as CentreCourt said, none of these "random" draws are actually random. This really isn't as big a story as some are making it. Sucks for Parkes, I guess, but Rogers won't face any bad press over this. Nobody is going to care.

I haven't read this guy before but his point gets lost in all the over-the-top disgusting language in his blog. Using the 'C' word? That's really needed to get your point across?

He sounds like he's from a trailer park. Now he just sounds like another wannabee internet tough guy who nobody will ever take seriously.
