Minnesota trades Ricky Rubio ($2.7 mil), Corey Brewer ($2.9 mil), and Henk Norel (minimum).
Instead of trying to sign Rudy Gay next year (can't understand why Minnesota is talking about that now), Minnesota gets a starting small forward who will flourish in the running game and as a primary or secondary scorer (behind Al Jefferson). Thornton is stuck in his rookie contract for the next 3 years, so Minnesota doesn't have to worry about him bailing on them yet. On top of that, David Kahn reacquires the Minny pick. Minny's going to be awful in the next two years and that pick that the Clippers currently own may be a referendum on the job that he's doing.
Clippers get their star player in Ricky Rubio that they were trying to acquire with Allen Iverson.
Clippers point guards: Baron Davis, Ricky Rubio, Sebastian Telfair.
Clippers small forwards: Rasual Butler, Corey Brewer, Steve Novak (and Craig Smith)
Clippers can bring Ricky Rubio along slowly. If he blows up, the Clippers can try to trade Baron Davis to Philadelphia or Houston.
David Kahn has already stated a preference for Jonny Flynn (his comment about GMs agreeing that they had Flynn rated higher than Rubio) and he has gone on record as saying that he didn't see Rubio and Flynn playing much together, which contradicted his earlier statement at the time of the draft that they will play together.
.
I don't think MIN would do that, but I could be wrong. For the Clips, it depends if we will be patient with Rubio, or if we don't want to have to deal with Rubio's contract situation.
