Training Camp: Implementing the Framework:

On Monday, the Kings gathered to introduce themselves to the media at the team’s practice facility and gain familiarity with one another and the roles of the staff at a nearby restaurant. On Tuesday, the team tipped off 2009-10 training camp with a two-a-day set of practices.

The team’s first run-through was more of an “orientation,” according to Coach Paul Westphal. Due to League rules, which limit teams to 3.5 hours of basketball practice in a given day – not including stretching, conditioning and meetings — and only one of the two practices per day to contact competition, the coaching staff utilized the early practice to begin giving the players the team’s offensive and defensive framework.

Westphal said it takes a few days to convey the team’s “big picture” and following the delivery of its offensive and defensive details, he begins breaking down the smaller elements. The first practice, according to Westphal, was highlighted by the discussion of defensive situational protocol and terminology, transition defense and the basic default offensive structure the team will maintain in the early offense or when a given offensive play breaks down.

“I thought the guys did a really great job of picking up the framework of what we’re trying to do offensively and defensively,” Westphal said smiling.

Having Evans as teammate thrills Martin:

One day before the start of training camp, Kevin Martin remained consistent.

He won't call the Kings "his" team, even if his big contract and status as leading scorer would indicate otherwise.

And even if you think he'd feel threatened, Martin is still giddy about playing with rookie Tyreke Evans, the fourth overall pick in the June draft.

Martin texted the Kings' decision makers the morning of the draft to let them know he wanted Evans, even if some think the former Memphis star is better suited to play Martin's spot at shooting guard.

"A lot of people say he's not a true point, but that doesn't matter," Martin said at Kings media day Monday. "The last five years I've been playing with guys who were actually point guards who think they're '2' guards."

Tyreke Evans sits out scrimmage:

Kings' highly-touted draft Tyreke Evans had a rough first day of training camp Tuesday, as numerous sources close to the team tell me he sat out tonight's scrimmage with a knee issue.

While we'll surely hear more about it tomorrow, no one seems to be overly concerned just yet. I was told that he had been dealing with a lingering groin problem of some sort and may have impacted the knee in a secondary way, and wouldn't be shocked if they did a precautionary MRI tomorrow. It now makes sense why I had been told earlier in the day that he didn't do the team's conditioning test, as he was clearly laboring because of this problem.

Beno Udrih will have to fight off new Kings Tyreke Evans, Sergio Rodriguez to keep point guard job:

As the Kings' worst season in franchise history segued into another offseason of rebuilding, they were hardly secretive about where the team needed to improve first.

The point guard spot. Namely, get someone better than Beno Udrih.

It was quite the U-turn of events from the previous summer, when Udrih's breakout season had led to a five-year, $32 million deal and the fair assumption that he was the point guard of the future. Yet leading up to the June 25 draft, the Kings' practice facility was a virtual home away from home for the nation's elite point guard prospects.

The No. 4 selection wound up being Memphis' Tyreke Evans, of course, but could have been Syracuse's Jonny Flynn, Davidson's Stephen Curry or - serious skepticism and all - Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio if Evans had been gone. It didn't stop there, either, as the draft night trade for former Portland point guard Sergio Rodríguez pounded the point guard point even further.

Nocioni eager to learn from Elie:

Meeting your childhood hero is nice, but studying under him is another matter entirely.

It's a situation Andres Nocioni plans to take full advantage of this season. Nocioni first saw Kings assistant coach Mario Elie play basketball when he was growing up in Argentina. Nocioni also would be happy toknowElie is looking forward to working with him

Argentina was the second international stop on Elie's journey to the NBA in the summer of 1987. Nocioni still recalls watching Elie play long before Elie made his name as a defensive stalwart and clutch shooter in the NBA.

Nocioni also remembers Elie succeeded because of hard work and not relying solely on athletic ability.

GAH! We don't need Tyreke dealing with any injuries now, not even little ones.

Tyreke Evans injury update:

Tyreke Evans will have an MRI on his strained left knee. He injured the knee yesterday during the team's practice.

"He just took a step he didn't like," said Kings coach Paul Westphal.

Evans shot free throws after practice, but Westphal said there is still some concern.

Center Melvin Ely also missed practice this morning with a right knee strain. He injured his knee during last night's scrimmage. His injury won't require an MRI.

Mason and Thompson shine early:

The stars of last night's scrimmage, according to coach Paul Westphal, were forward Jason Thompson and guard Desmond Mason.

Westphal said Thompson did a good job rebounding and "reading the situations when the ball came to him offensively."

Mason, the veteran guard trying to make the team after playing in only 39 games for Oklahoma City because of a knee injury, was aggressive on offense and defense, Westphal said.

At his best Mason was one of the most explosive athletes in the NBA. He won the 2001 Slam Dunk contest and dunked over opponents with ease.

The Kings don't have an explosive player like that in the backcourt. So his aggressiveness on both ends of the floor bodes well for his chances. Then again, it's only one scrimmage.

Interesting quote from the article above:

*Sean May weighed in at 261 pounds this morning to earn a fully guarantee his $884,881 salary for the season. He had until today or Oct. 27 to weigh 265 or less or $100,000 of his deal was not guaranteed.

Sean May looked very good in these last couple weeks. Way to go May! I hope this is the first step to his success (well, regaining) in the NBA.

Return to Sacramento Kings
