Sessions > Foye?, Pavlovic = Miller?

Post#1 » by Wolves2011 » Thu Oct 1, 2009 9:57 pm

I think so.

We traded away Foye and Miller to get an asset, Rubio. That asset is GROWING in value in Europe for the next few years.

Kahn then replaced Foye and Miller in the free agent pool by signing Sessions and Miller.

Foye was an undersized shooting guard who the team wanted to play PG. He flopped as a PG and and only shot 41% as a shooting guard. He also couldn't cover his position.

Sessions is a great PG, who averaged 5.7 assists in only 27 minutes per game. His assist to turnover ratio was in the top 10 in the league. He shot almost 45% from the field. And he really has had only one season of NBA experience vs 2 1/2 years for Foye.

Miller turns 30 this season. [Pavlovic turns 26.] So Miller would never have been part of the young core. Miller was a great 3 point shooter in past seasons who didn't want to shoot 3 pointers last season, don't know why. Pavlovic is also a very good 3 point shooter. But Pavlovic is a better athlete, defender and younger.

If you ask why Pavlovic hasn't done better in his career? He has played behind Lebron at SF. Lebron never comes off the court.

If Pavlovic works out we can resign him next summer. If not we rented him for a season just like we were renting Miller. Miller would have been traded at trade deadline this season or not resigned next summer.

Its unlikely we would have signed Foye to a big contract next summer either unless his play vastly improved.

So Kahn essentially used Miller and Foye to stash another asset while giving up nothing on the court, but signing Sessions and Pavlovic.

I like it!

You could make a compelling case that Foye and Sessions have a similar production value, with very different styles as well as long term value.

Miller is a much better player then Pavlovic. But neither Foye nor Miller were part of our long term plan so we add the value of Sessions but do not lose with Foye/Miller.

Unless he shocks us, I do not expect pavlovic to contribute long term.

Perhaps since Miller was more of a distributor we should look to compare his numbers/production with Miller? I tend to compare Brewer's value to Foye's. Very different style, but I think Brewer will have more value.

As for Foye and Sessions, sessions is clearly the better offensive player.
[Neither is a great defender.]

Look at their PER's.

Foye
2006 - 14.03
2007 - 12.90
2008 - 13.76

Sessions
2008 - 17.65 [Ranked 13th among PG on ESPN's site]

Almost half his minutes last year were as SG [He would have ranked 11th in PER as SG.]
[really his rookie year last year because he only played in 17 games his first season when his PER was 16.48]

Hollinger calls Session the most under rated player in the NBA.

Clearly better than Foye at both PG and SG.

As for Miller and Sash Pavlovic,

Miller is a better "OFFENSIVE" player.

He has better career shooting percentage, is a better passer and rebounder.

But Sasha is a much much better defensive player. [He actually plays defense which is a step in the right direction.] He is very athletic and was called the best defenders on Kobe by Jackson.

Thats why coach KURT wanted Kahn to get him.

Sasha shot about 40% from 3 point range, better than Miller last season [when Miller was willing to shoot 3 pointers.]

[Do you think Miller didn't shoot 3 pointers because he wanted to be traded, thats my theory.]

I'd say Pavlovic and Miller are even with Miller better on offense [when he wants to shoot] and pavlovic better on defense.

Sessions is a much better defensive player because he tries. He makes mental mistakes that will get him beat on the backdoor, but he tries.

Sasha is nothing to me. compare Brewer and Sessions with Miller/Foye.

sasha could be a better defender than brewer, partially because of his experience.

Again, Jackson called Sasha the best one on one defender of Kobe, thats a high compliment.

He is a much better shooter from the 3 point line, which we want from out wings, so Sessions/Flynn can penetrate and Al can play down low.

i also expect nothing from Pavlov. He's proven to be a lame duck at many destinations. Doesn't try hard, makes dumb mistakes and is just bad for chemistry. If i'm looking for a shooter I'd rather see Ellington, and if I'm looking for defense I'll go with Brewer.

Unlikely.

Against more physical players, I would agree. Most of them just post up Corey. Not as easy with Sasha.

Well, a year ago they were both huge parts of our long term plan.

this plan we have now seems to have direction and purpose. no more lets draft this guy and how we can bend him and the plan to fit eachother. Seems more like we are looking for people who fit the genearal plan instead.

Session and Pavolic have much more realistic expectations I think than Foye and Miller had last year. So, in terms of living up to expectations, I thin Sasha > Mike and Ramon > Randy is accurate. Obviously MM is much better at most (all?) aspects of the game than SP. Foye and Sessions are totally different players, hard to compare.

be nice to see Pavs recapture his confidence from his 1st contract year season, he was pretty solid. Gomes/Pavlovic/Ellington/Brewer: if those 4 can concentrate on hitting spot up threes, finishing breaks, and giving good effort on defense, they'll have done their job as far as I'm concerned. Let Al, Sessions, and Flynn create offense when need be, but I don't want to see much of our SGs and SFs trying to do too much off the dribble, I don't think thats any of their strengths

Sessions could be about the same value as Foye on the court, but I'd rather have Sessions. I think Foye gets under-rated here now, but the key point is that while Sessions and Foye cost about the same this year, we have Sessions locked in for about $3.9/$4.2/$4.6 for the next three years, which I think is a pretty good contract. We have no idea what Foye is going to get, but I think the least he would get would be a deal starting at the 2010 MLE, so his would run about $5.4/$5.7/$6.1.

Miller >> Pavlovic however. Depending on how advanced the team looks, I wouldn't mind bringing him back for a reasonable amount of money -- after we've secured our #1.

i think Foye is getting a bad rap because he under-preformed and wasn't exactly what we wanted and is a terrible player in comparison to Roy. He'll be a solid player with the Wizards i think. he has skills, just not something we needed to be starting and playing with the expectations we had for him.
