Re: TT '09 - Finals Assignment Is Up!
Assignment: Make an International Team
I'll start with the New Jersey Nets
Trade #1
San An outgoing:
Tony Parker
NJ outgoing:
Devin Harris
Trent Hassell
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245063
Why?
San An gets a little younger, a lot cheaper and keep their guy locked up for the next 4 years, all while staying at a close to even talent level and garnering playoff experience.
NJ only gets a little older, gets a little better and gets, international!
Trade #2
Dallas outgoing:
Dirk Nowitzki
NJ outgoing:
Brook Lopez
Dallas unprotected pick returned
Najera
Bobby Simmons
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245065
Why?
If Dallas was to trade Dirk, it would have to be close to a can't pass deal, and at the same time he could walk. This is that close to can't pass. They get back expirings for the most part, an absolute stud center in Lopez and their own pick so they don't have to worry about tanking and truthfully they should stay competitive and likely still in the playoffs this season even after this deal.
NJ gets old, but they continue building the instant contender, that is international!
Trade #3
Portland sends:
Rudy Fernandez
Nicolas Batum
NJ sends:
Courtney Lee
CDR
future 1st
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245069
Why?
Portland gets rid of a possible future problem in Rudy while staying basically dead even talent wise and gains even further playoff experience, all while staying young and inexpensive.
Batum has shown a lot of potential, but was a limited minute player and CDR should be on the same level in that role as well, although not the shooter Batum is, he does other things better.
NJ throws in a future first to push the deal.
NJ stays about even talent wise, but gets international!
Trade #4
GSW sends:
Ronny Turiaf
NJ sends:
Sean Williams
Josh Boone
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245073
Why?
GSW was said to have interest in both these players and both can do a lot of what Turiaf can do, just cheaper in the future and one or both could still break out.
NJN get their center, who although undersized, can block with the best of them and would likely contrast well with Dirk. Also, they get international!
Trade #5
Chicago sends:
Loul Deng
NJ sends:
Terrence Williams
GSW pick
2010 pick
Tony Battie
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245077
Why?
Chicago gets out of Deng's deal and brings back a promising young swing man on the 1st year of his rookie deal in Terrence Williams and the expiring that comes back is good big man depth.
They also get 2 1sts, one of which is highly likely to be a lotto or very early non lotto.
For NJ, it's almost a bit of an overpay, but they stay young, bring in a quality starter who can run the break, D up, hit the mid range and rebound, all while staying out of Dirk's way.
They also, get international!
Trade #6
Toronto sends:
Marco Belinelli
Antoine Wright
NJ sends:
Keyon Dooling
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245077
Why?
Ask anyone in Toronto, for some reason they have a weird obsession with Keyon Dooling. That said he is an awesome combo guard to have coming off your bench and plays really good D, can shoot the snot out of the ball from deep and has no problem running the point.
They lose the recently aquired Belinelli, but they get what they need.
NJ loses Dooling, but Belinelli has shown promise at either guard position. Toine is in there for salary matching purposes, as per trade checker, because of Marco, this trade can't go down till September 30th, which is less then a week away.
Plus, NJ gets international!
Trade #7
Sacto sends:
Andres Nocioni
NJ sends:
Jarvis Hayes
Rafer Alston
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=5245077
Why?
It's a salary dump, but two things. One is the team is going nowhere this year and maybe next. Two is they get very high quality players back as expirings, both filling needs and one with true resign value as a backup wing(Hayes).
For NJ, bring in more depth, and, you guessed it, get international!
Overview and resulting team for NJ:
PG Tony Parker/Belinelli
SG Rudy Fernandez/Belinelli
SF Deng/Noce/Batum
PF Dirk/Noce/Yi
C Turiaf/Yi
The team is tight and concise, well balanced and diverse at the same time. There are defensive and offensive players, but admittedly need a little more depth at center and point guard.
I managed to flip the entire roster with the exception of Yi though and that was no easy task, especially keeping things fair for both sides on 7 trades and balancing the roster.
I'll leave that to you the judges and posters to decide.
Parker works well with a dominant big man and a playmaking guard next to him, and he gets that here. He also gets a running mate for the break in Deng and Noce. Dirk is high post and perimiter orientated and gets a lane clogger and tough guy/defender/shot blocker in Turiaf to hold him down. Yi gets to learn from the best and play some back up center as well.
Youth is served as well, with guys like Rudy, Belinelli, Batum, Yi and even Parker and Turiaf, so the future would look bright as well, so the team should contend now and have a seriously good future to boot.
Fin.

vc4p, thank you for finishing your proposal on time.
RTM, without a proposal, you are risking being disqualified. If anyone can get a hold of the absent Finals competitor, please do. I'm not trying to be unfair to vc4p; I believe that he would want us to at least make an effort to contact RTM, as opposed to winning by default.

At least give him until midnight tomorrow, I don't want to win by default.

Re: TT '09 - Finals Assignment Is Up!
Sorry everyone, since this past Monday, I have been absolutely swamped, and have had no time to even think about the finals assignment (to be perfectly honest, I had forgotten until I finally logged on and saw the message last night). Since it's been out of mind all week, I don't have a proposal to post just yet.

Re: TT '09 - Finals Assignment Is Up!
I understand getting swamped and neglecting this tourney; after all, even the one who's organizing it has done it!
If you can get it in as soon as possible, we'd appreciate it. vc4p, again, I hope you understand. I'd like to actually judge a Finals instead just awarding one, but if RTM is not able to get his proposal in really soon, it wouldn't be fair NOT to give the title to you.

Re: TT '09 - Finals Assignment Is Up!
Alright, here goes. I'm just gonna keep it simple:
DEAL 1 (CHA - GS - SAC)
CHA Sends: Bell, Ajinca
CHA Gets: Jackson
Gets a player to provide needed scoring, perimeter defense, and leadership. Jax should play up to his contract for LB.
GS Sends: Jackson, Law
GS Gets: Nocioni, Ajinca
Golden State moves player who aren't wanted/want to be there for some international players who fit well and make less in the years to come.
SAC Sends: Nocioni
SAC Gets: Bell, Law
The Kings moves Noc for depth and expirings. Bell can be a steady vet on a young team, and Law will get another chance to see what he's made of.
DEAL 2 (GS - NOH)
GS Sends: Maggette, Claxton
GS Gets: Stojakovic
The Warriors move tons of long term salary and add a great (and international) fit in Peja.
NOH Sends: Stojakovic
NOH Gets: Maggette, Claxton
NOH adds long term salary, but get a big upgrade in Corey. Paired with Posey on the wings, it gives Paul some reliable wing scoring.
GSW Roster (* = international):
Ellis / Curry / Watson
Azubuike* / Morrow
Nocioni* / Stojakovic*
Randolph / Wright / Moore
Beidrins* / Turiaf* / Ajinca*
The team's not entirely foreign, but this team has an undeniable international presence (6 of 13).
Sorry again about the delay.

Re: TT '09 - Finals Assignment Is Up!
FINALS ASSIGNMENT
vincecarter4pres (1) vs. RTM (3)
Assemble an "International" Team
vincecarter4pres, I like the look of your team overall. I think you could have removed the Portland section, and instead targeting Garcia from SAC. The efficiency that it would have added is offset by the fact that fewer int'l players would have been on your new-look Nets, so it's really a preference more than an issue of your score. Also, I'd imagine TOR's love affair with Dooling ended with the Jack acquisition, but I have indeed seen Raptors fans on this board that covet him.
ORIGINALITY: 8
FEASIBILITY: 7
EFFECTIVENESS: 6
RTM, I appreciate your fresh approach. I think CHA would have to decline deal #1, though. They have been in salary-stripping mode this summer; they didn't even want to give a contract to Felton, one of the franchise's first draft picks. Also, Larry Brown loves Raja, and I don't think he's got enough fire left in him to tangle with S-Jax until they can coexist. Deal #2 is one I have endorsed for a long time; it's not original, but it works.
ORIGINALITY: 7
FEASIBILITY: 5
EFFECTIVENESS: 5
To my fellow judges: please submit your Finals judgments in a more timely manner than I, so that we can draw this tourney to a close!

To echo Ecuhus, I'm not in love with the Portland trade. I actually think you'd get hammered if you proposed it on the board. I'm also thinking you guys are overpaying for Luol until he has a good month under his belt. Goof team all around though.

I know you were rushed by real life, but only having 6 players international with 3 of them alreadyresiding ont he team and a full two positions with no international guys there is really falling short. Additionally, I agree with Ecuhus about the Charlotte part of it (though not the Larry Brown part).

VC4P:
Originality: 7
Feasibility: 7
Effectiveness: 7
I like the team, I like most of the trades, I like the way you built it, NJ was a good team to break-up and turn Euro. Solid is the word to describe the whole thing.
RTM:
Originality: 9
Feasibility: 7
Effectiveness: 3
I really like some of the ideas(particularly the Peja trade), but I don't think you created a cohesive international team that fits the standards of the assignment.

Alright, I'll just close the judging.
With an average score of 19.67, VINCECARTER4PRES is the winner!
RTM, thanks for competing; your average score of 17 is respectable.
Thanks again to the judges and competitors that helped fill the grueling weeks of post-summer league, pre-training camp NBA fandom! Now let's get the season started already!
