Hey guys new poster long time reader
What's up guys just like to say hello to all my die hard suns fans out there. Been a Suns fans all my life, worked for the Suns a couple years, and hopefully one day will become GM of the Suns with alot of hard work and dedication.
I'd like to get your guys opinion about the upcoming season, how big a role Frye will play in the offense, if the defense will finally improve, how big an issue will rebounding be, will J rich flourish in this new system etc.
First off I'd like to give you guys my opinion on the Suns for this 2009/2010 season.
To begin, we cannot but predictions on this team win/loss wise because we have not seen them play in one single game yet as a group. Signs point to optimism and reasons to hope we can return to the style of play that basically revolutionized the game of basketball and increased ratings and made the game fun to watch again.
The way this team will win lots of games is if we can get multiple stops in a row and clamp down when we need to, focus on the little details of the game, boxing out, rebounding, making sure teams don't get 2nd and 3rd opportunities, and having a deep bench with a rotation of about 10 guys. Health is obviously important gotta keep nash hill and stat healthy.
Notice I didn't say anything about offense. There's nothing to worry about on offense we'll score alot of points. I figure we'll score almost 115 a game honestly when you take into account we're going to have extra possessions our starting five can all score the ball, Dragic looks more comfortable in the open court, he and Barbosa had nice summers.
The key between finishing 4th and 8th in the west will honestly come down to key stops in the 4th quarter it's about as simple as that in my mind. There will be about 5-10 games that will be decided in the 4th quarter and we'll be trading buckets and that'll be the time we need to step up and get stops. My concern though is that this team is not equipped to play good defense. Grant Hill is the best perimeter defender we have and unless J Rich improves his D we will struggle against elite guards.
Our post D concerns me as well as we took our best low post defender and traded him. I liked the move to give us cap relief and to improve team chemistry but don't discredit the Big Fella. He added stability to our lineup and honestly wasn't as a big a problem as people like to say he was.
This means Amare especially has to man up and become the defender we need him to be. Ditto for Lopez. Lopez has to be flying all over the place making the paint an unwelcome area for opposing bigs.
I like the signing of Frye he will give us good production and he'll be a tim Thomas lite type player for us. He's going to space the floor for us and really open the paint for Amare and J rich and Hill to get to the basket. Only problem with leaving your center on the perimeter is we're drastically reducing our chance for offensive rebounds.
Dragic will be solid this year not spectacular but solid is an upgrade from what we saw last year and I think we can count on him to be a solid backup point guard. Kerr is out of his mind if he thinks he's the 2nd best point guard in the draft. Let's call it like it is. We got good value for Dragic in the 2nd but we paid him 1st round money so Dragic has yet to live up to his price tag. Good thing is he's got room to improve time to improve and he's learning behind one of the best of all time. Speaking of Stevie, if you guys watched the games last year you noticed Steve lost some of his clutch shooting it seemed. It seemed many times he'd come up just short on his buckets they'd hit the front rim and go off. We need Steve to get back to that old form good thing he's growing out the hair.
Overall I see the season's success hinging alot upon a few things.
1. The defense especially in the 4th quarter
2. rebounding +/- we can't get beat on the boards badly
3. deep rotation keeping Nash, Hill healthy
4. Jason Richardson...hopefully he flourishes in this system and he gets better looks than what he saw last season....attention to coaches DO NOT GIVE J RICH THE BALL OFF THE CURL AT THE ELBOW ENXTENDED. I've saw him shoot way too many elbow extended long jumpers which is not a high percentage shot compared to the corner three or shooting at the top of the key. It's just a weird angle and he wouldn't be completely square to the bucket when he'd shoot it either.
4a. J rich's defense. J rich in my opinion is probably the biggest offensive/defensive x factor right now. If he scores 20 plus, shoots a good percentage from 2 and 3 grabs rebounds and plays good D we'll be in good shape.
To conclude, I'm really excited about Earl Clark he was the right pick because of his versatility and his ability to faceup on bigs and take them off the dribble and pull up for jumpers. His offense will come. But what excites me is he's nba ready right now to play defense. Finally a guy who's not a liability on defense guarding the pick and roll.

Welcome welcome.
I think another factor that would determine our success this season is the development of Rolo. If he improves by mid season to a point where he is a serviceable defender than we'd be sweet. Rebounding is a big key but I'd much rather Rolo be our defensive guy.

Re: Hey guys new poster long time reader
hey guys thanks for the welcome.
Some consider rebounding to be a part of defense, some consider it it's own category within the game itself. Personally I think rebounding correlates to defense because if you get a rebound off a missed shot by the offense you stopped them essentially from having another opportunity to score so you did the job.
Rolo really does need to improve his rebounding and he needs to learn to control his emotions and not foul so much. That's really detrimental to the team. Rolo will play a key in this season as well we don't really need him to score much just score off garbage points or if he catches the defense sleeping get a bucket or two down low. I'd love to see a stat line for Rolo of about 15-20 minutes a game 6 points 6 boards 1 block.
Right now with this team as I look up the depth chart I don't see a glaring weakness where we lack depth at a position. One could argue we could upgrade at positions (center, backup point probably come to mind although Dragic I think will be solid) we are deeper than most teams in the league.
In the end it will really come down to can Alvin Gentry teach these guys how to play defense as a unit be accountable for each other and play cohesively as a unit. Individually, these guys do not have what it takes to be a good defensive team. Nash and Amare are bad defenders and J rich is inconsistent. Don't know about Frye's defense but he's been advertised as an offensive big. So if they can scheme well draw up some good zones be active don't foul get the rebound get on the break we should be good to go.
Defense and rebounding Suns. Defense and rebounding. That's all they should be focused on right now.

I think that stat kine from fropez is totally reachable/ reasonable... i could see him better than that this season.
wait, this might be a stupid question, but really? are u being sarcastic? are you like, a trainer? an assisstant? or like, a vendor? just curious.
nice first two posts... i would say welcome, but I've only been here 40 or so days, so it would look kindof stupid.

well I technically only worked for the Suns one year I was a ballboy so my career with the Suns hasnt gone very far ha.
I worked for the suns and the mercury as a ballboy then worked in the ticket office as well one year.
Hopefully one day I will be the GM. It's my dream which I'm taking steps right now to make it a reality.

Just keep the goal in sight! A lot of CEOs or GMs of big corps started out at the bottom.
Cannot remember the company, but it's current CEO started out as a Janitor. It took him a handful of years to get there, but obviously he didn't lose sight of his ultimate goal.
Looking forward to the 28-29 season.

Re: Hey guys new poster long time reader
that's a great story. Unfortunately to the job that I want which is Steve Kerr's job....i'm sorry I could do a better job than he's doing right now and I'm not just saying that as an arm-chair GM....has almost 50 percent of the spots occupied by former players of son's of former GM's. I looked it's about 13 or so general mangers today for the NBA were former players or former owner's/GM's son's. But nevertheless I will take David Griffin's model of success and hopefully it will lead me to the promised land. I want nothing more than to hold up the trophy on a hot day in June on Central outside the stadium.

Re: Hey guys new poster long time reader
oh on a side note just thought I'd bring up a funny(or not so funny based on your views and failed expectations) I know IHG the i hate ginobili guy who claimed to be the insider for the Suns. He's actually a close friend of mine. I couldn't believe it was him. He didn't disclose who his source was but he said it was legitimate and I believe him he wouldn't lie. Don't mean to bring up bad memories of him saying WE GOT VON WAFER. or we're trying to sign dwayne wade in free agency.
He's not a prick like he seemed to be on this site he's a cool guy who loves the Suns just as we all do just was excited to share information he thought was correct. Some of his comments were out of line but that's not a side I've ever seen of him.
