Popovich: Spurs' Big Three will be healthy

Post#1 » by TAI8 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 6:44 pm

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili left being busy this summer to the rest of the San Antonio Spurs.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Tuesday that his two aging stars have taken it easier than usual this offseason to get healthy, while the Spurs front office was unusually active and swinging deals for major additions like Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess.

Duncan, hobbled by knee problems down the stretch and in the playoffs, has pushed back the normal start of his normal preseason regimen by a month. The 33-year-old will begin workouts next week that the All-Star typically gets going in early August.

Ginobili, meanwhile, has limited his summer activity to a treadmill and some walks after appearing in just 44 games last season because of bad ankles.

"He is healthy," Popovich said. "He'll come back out of shape but healthy."

Between Duncan's ailing legs and a weak supporting cast, the Spurs limped into their earliest summer since 2000 after a first-round playoff loss to Dallas.

Duncan sat out several back-to-backs down the stretch because of a nagging right quad injury that Popovich said has healed.

"He's got more flexibility in that leg than he ever has," Popovich said. "Significantly more. He's cranking his knees during the day and at night when he goes to bed. It's paid off."

We have never had a chemistry problem so I don't think it'll be an issue.

My worry right now is really on the offensive part.

I hope RJ doesn't just try to fit in and take the open shots. Being the 4th option on offense obviously can do that to a player. I certainly don't want him to turn into Bruce Bowen offensively. He needs to be aggresive and all but I have my concerns. Most guys will just try to fit in and not ruin the chemistry of the other guys on the floor especially knowing that Manu, Duncan, and Parker have been playing together forever. We can't afford to have a passive Jefferson.

And I really hope the Spurs use Duncan's postup a lot more than last year. It's true what Pop said earlier this summer that Duncan has turned into a jumpshooter. Perhaps it's knee problems.

Lets hope that they can stay healthy, because if they can...

We've got a lot of new faces to deal with, but if anyone can make it work it's Pop. I imagine, like most years, we'll start slow and work rotations until the AS break - and then it will be all systems go. I highly doubt we'll end up the 1st seed - it'd be nice but the key for us is obviously the health of our core.

If healthy, I'm supremely confident at what we can accomplish. We've been hobbled the past couple of years, I just want a shot with a fully healthy team, really see what we can do.

Bring on the season. No, wait - the season is boring - BRING ON THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!

It'd be great to see a healthy Duncan; he's one of my favorite players ever. A little mix-up in the summer routine, no more tire-throwing (:o), a little more rest... C'mon Timmy, take a shot at number 5. :D

Yeah he changed up his summer routine a little bit; he's 33 and knows that the window is closing.

He (as well as Mason) shed 15lbs. We'll see what the net result of that is.
