What if Dwight Howard hit free throws?

Post#1 » by sosa » Mon Oct 5, 2009 3:20 pm

Let's say Dwight was shooting 75% from the FT line, where would he rank in Fantasy's elite?

Would he be the #1 player in all of fantasy?

He would average 30 ppg, 14 rebs, 2 asts, 3 blks and 0.5 stls while shooting 60% FG and 75% FT.

The scary part of this, I think he's a much improved FT shooter this year.

First of all, I don't think Howard would reach 30 ppg unless he develops a mid range game or a few more post moves (not mention changes to the Magic), but if he maintained a modest improvement of scoring (say, 22 ppg) while improving his free throw percentages to 75%, then he's a definite top 5 fantasy player, and I'd put him behind Paul, Lebron, and Wade. With the stats presented above, he'd be number 1, but that 30 ppg is highly unlikely. Aside from individual improvement, the Magic is a talented enough team that it would not warrant any single player to average 30 ppg.

Second, what makes you think he's a much improved FT shooter? Wishful thinking doesn't count.

Well, this is all speculative...but, if Dwight were hitting his FTs consistently he would attack the basket with a different type of ferocity. In the past, he's been afraid of contact because he couldn't finish at the line.

75% ft shooting = 30 ppg +

He wouldn't be sent to the free throw line as much if she shot free throws well.

9 for 17 from the line tonight in a preseason game against the Mavericks. Keep dreaming about that 75 percent.

If he could hit free throws at a good rate he'd be actually worth the first round.

Dwight is currently a top 10 player in H2H leagues! The free throw shooting and turnovers kill him in rotisserie, but who plays that anyway? I'd rather start a team with Dwight than Bosh, Pau, Amare or any other big men in the league.

I just think that Dwight has the shooting mechanics to become a decent FT shooter. He doesn't have Shaq's problems. With Dwight, it's gotta be all mental and i think it's something he can overcome.

And, when he does...watch out!

Anything of substance to back that up?

if dwight would have his ft at 63% throughout his career id say he's a top 5 pick, but anything under 60 kills your fts. so ya, if he can get his ft to 65% or better, he'd be a top 5 fantasy player no doubt. that 65% is good for a big, and if you have 85% + ft shooters than you're good in that category. but when its under 60% its an absolute cold blooded killer. i dont like anything under 63, since 63 is inconsistent itself, anything under that is terribly inconsistent.

At Howard's volume 70% is a killer.

How can you even question that in H2H leagues? Yahoo has him listed at 20 ranked. His ADP is probably 12-14.

He's a Center.
He averages 21 ppg, 14 rpg, 3 blks, 1stl
He averaged 81 games played in the last three years.

Going by Yahoo rankings is positvely (Please Use More Appropriate Word). Check out a decent site like basketball Monster or run the numbers yourself. H2H doesn't change the game as much as some people think. Any guy who entirely screws 1/9th of your ability to win while not helping or hindering in 3 other cats is not anywhere near first round value.
