Yeah, Green Day is another one of those bands I used to love and then they lost their charm in a big way -- like the Eagles, Boston, Who etc. There are certain bands I know should be on the list but am kinda waiting for someone to say because I just think they have lost their edge, sold out or their sound doesn't translate to the modern era (Kansas for instance). Green Day seems to me one of those bands.

Offspring? Eh why not. It's the band the Guitar Hero generation look back on as their version of punk (along with Sum 41).

Cool song, Band. I'd never heard Zakk's old band. I was talking about his latest attempt that sounds exactly like a bad Ozzy impression.

Oh BTW, yeah Kings of Leon and BRMC were already on my list too.

BTW, Grizzly Bear was pretty darn amazing live. I really enjoyed their 15 song set. Chris Beat is a phenomenal drummer, the vocal harmonies were on, I loved the clarinet and recorder solos (lol!), and Dan Rossen is a very unique guitar player.

It was a blast. I suggest them to nearly anyone of any musical taste. They have brilliant pop songs, some slow psychedelic tunes, as well as some epic finishes that just bleed energy.

I wouldn't for a moment group The Who with those others.
Townsend and Daltry got Kennedy Center awards. What'd
Boston ever do besides sell a lot of one album? Eagles
I would also rank a lot higher than Boston who I think
sound really dated now.

I was never into a lot of the 'metal' that was popular in the 80/90s
like AC/DC. I prefer rockers like Rory Gallagher, Hendrix (duh),
Alvin Lee (10 Years After)...things along those lines.

but what prompts me to post at this time is that my
wife is 'surprising' me with tix tonight to see the Allman
Brothers. They're probably my all time fav rock band.
Give me a time machine and I'd have to go back and
see Duane. It's been nearly 30 years since I've seen
them though. Looking forward to hearing Derek Trucks.

Widespread Panic is the opening act. I've wanted to see them
for a while too.

Back from Austin City Limits (what a freakin muddy mess!), and was just perusing videos on youtube and happened to come across this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3MIb6Y4 ... re=related

The green umbrella/ blue poncho dude (at the very beginning and end) singing along to the song is me. There's not too many videos up yet so it's hilarious that I came across one and I'm actually in it.

I seriously was about to smack the shiz out of some of the kids in the area that just talked the entire freaking time. I ended up moving back after a bit.

Lots of great acts that I ended up having to miss (due to proximity/ conflicts, weather or need of food/ beer or some sort of dry shelter to rest my swollen knee).

Overall though, great time and I'm definitely putting it on my list of things to do next year.

Yeah, I wasn't comparing the bands' status. I was saying certain bands are retro-hip. Hendrix and the Doors will be forever cool. Once the Who got on every CSI, they lost alot of hipness (probably lost it when pinball machines went out of style). This coming from someone who has seen them live five times and used to love them. You're right that Boston sounds dated. So do the Eagles BTW. That was my point. Again, I'm using my own filter and it's all subjective.

It's all what you personally like

I don't watch CSI so I wasn't aware of the Who connection there

I'll still occasionally listen to Boston (they're on my iPod) but
certain songs I've simply heard too many times thanks to
the horrible state of FM radio since the long ago daze of
my youth. To me the Eagles sound somewhat less dated
but some of the same things apply there too.

The ABB were smokin' last night. I'd never seen either Trucks
or Warren Haynes. Both are fully worthy of their status as
guitar leaders of one of the most influential guitar bands
in rock. They brought Trucks' wife out for a couple numbers
(Susan Tedeschi). She played quite respectably herself and
sung an excellent version of Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.
Their home better have uber-security when they travel as
I'd think they'd have a few instruments left behind that
thieves would covet. I think I'd want a house sitter
(plus they have kid(s?)). Perhaps the highlight of the
night was Mountain Jam segueing into Dazed and Confused
before returning to Mtn Jam at the end.

ps - a guy flying considerably under the radar that guitar fans should
try to see is Sonny Landreth. His latest album is fantastic and features
appearances by Clapton, Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Dr John, Vince Gill
and a couple others (Robben Ford) who aren't coming to mind. Landreth often
plays the Barns at Wolf Trap. I've seen that show a couple times.
It is not to be missed.

Make sure you tell us how awesome they are! I might be going to a Blind Pilot concert sometime in November, but that is the only show I have lined up.

Had drinks with an ex-girlfriend last night. She's extremely hip and works for NPR. According to her the guy from the Mountain Goats is the best songwriter of this decade. So, ladies and gentlemen the Mountain Goats:

Well, Vultures were deafening. Amazing show. Must see if just to see Dave on drums again. Unlike the older days they didn't hangout backstage, so no good stories of meeting JPJ -- which was disappointing.

I think I'll skip the Jay and Ben show. Finally heard their album, and it's just ok. A Couple good songs. Here it is:

Still going to Devendra, but will be MIA for the Mountain Goats show.

I'd agree with her if she said lyric writer, but songwriter? hrm... that's a toughie. dude does write some great lyrics though. Another lyrical heavyweight to consider is David Berman of the Silver Jews.
