What We Learned in Camp This Week

Post#1 » by tisbee » Sat Oct 3, 2009 8:48 am

1)The Rockets are absolutely f***ed at Center.
When Adelman worries about Chuck getting two fouls and not having anybody to replace him...
Andersen is a PF,and might be a pretty decent one,but he is not an NBA Center.(Landry better start looking at getting that rent deposit back.)
It's the first week of camp and w/all the new players and young players facing expectations, who does Feigen devote an article to-Brian Cook! Brian end of bench is my middle name Cook! How many idiot GMs are going to buy the new, improved Brian Cook-see he even takes it to the basket! Of course it just takes one.
Easy prediction-Rockets will have a new Center on the team before the season starts.

2)Unless Chase Budinger is a human turnstile on D,he's going to get alot of minutes as a reserve 2/3. Alot of minutes. Once McGrady comes back the Second unit will be Lowry,Battier,Budinger,Andersen and Hayes. That group wil pick-n-roll other team's Second units to death.

3)Lowry spent the first 3 days in camp at SG. Looks like Taylor is a project that the team will be patient w/. But he's gonna be spending alot of time in Viperville.
McCants actually had a chance at making the team-yikes!

4)McGrady's not getting traded this season. The team hopes to ride his butt into the Playoffs and if they do so,will give strong consideration to bringing him back for a 1-3 yr deal.

5)Either Conroy as a third PG,or Temple as a combo gd are going to make the team. And the other will be a phone call away for an injury call-up.

I guess it's a good thing in the NBA that centers are like running backs in fantasy football. There's one or two good ones, and the rest just fall into the same level and can be serviceable. We won't be a championship team without a good/great big man, but we can be a decent team without one. I think we'll be okay coming into the season, maybe even better b/c we won't have the expectations of a championship. =/

why we care about center so much?
80% of the team have pf playing at the center position anyway

MaxRider,
Yes,but...
The Lakers have Bynum and Gasol
Portland has Oden and Pryzbilla(excellent rebounding even if limited offense)
Utah has Okur and Boozer/Milsap
Spurs have Duncan who may be listed as a PF but plays as a Center
That's 4 likely Playoff teams.

Clips will have Kaman and Griffin.
Amare in Pho,Jefferson in Minn and even Randolph in Memphis are all strong, skilled low-post players who may be PFs playing C,but are still a handful.
Sac has a nice active young duo in Hawes and Thompson.

That's 2/3 of the West,so there is reason to care.

Can we play a game first before the panic starts? This is the team we have. There are no illusions of a championship team in my mind or in most of the Rockets fans' minds.

just join but have been watching your team to see how your center position is coming along and was wondering if we could do a Diop or Nazr from the Bobcats for Landry and Cook swap?

Very unlikely.
Remote, very remote chance on Nazr, but only if Rockets were truly desperate.
No chance in Hades on Diop. No offense, horrid contract.

But you would be giving up Cook which is as much as Diop. He has a shot but when is the last time he has had playing time, in Orlando?

You might have a chance of getting Cook for Nazr, although IMO Nazr just isn't good enough to bother.

Neither of those guys will get you Landry, and there isn't really anything on your team that you could add that would entice us to take Diop.

MrBobcat,
Cook's contract expires at end of this season. Diop is making MLE money for 4 yrs. That's 1/10 of salary cap for the forseeable future on a back-up C who gives you zero offense and hasn't shown he can make up for that on the defensive end. The Rockets would never tie themselves to that long a contract for that much money on a back-up who doesn't do anything exceptional and is severely limited offensively.

"what can we give to get Dorsey then?"

The proverbial pair of dirty socks.
Seriously,if Charlotte offered a second for him,I honestly think Morey would take you up on it. Be advised,he seeems to still be suffering from plantar fasciitis.

Sergio Lull has decent handles, played today for Madrid against the Jazz.

Return to Houston Rockets
