Brian Stensaas covered me at practice today and asked me to post this update from there for him, since Wild writer Mike Russo messed up Brian’s computer last night while using it for the Wild opener…
Just left Target Center and exited into a rather quiet downtown Minneapolis. Quite the difference from the last few days where it’s just been a zoo down there. The sports nut in me wants five-day stretches like we just experienced to happen often. The licensed driver in me, however, appreciates the open roads.
The Wolves have completed Day 2 of preseason workouts in their home town. The assembled media was let in just in time to watch a 12-minute scrimmage between Team White and Team Black. The back-and-forth affair ended at the buzzer when the White’s Sasha Pavlovic nailed a three-pointer from the right key. Final score 24-22. Team Black then ran a series of ladder-style sprints while Team White stood and watched. To their credit, most clapped Team Black on in encouragement.
Kevin Love – playing with the White team – was hit in the throat while posting up underneath one of the baskets near the end of the scrimmage. He received treatment from the training staff, including taking several deep breaths and holding a small bag of ice just under his chin, before being taken from the facility to be seen by a doctor. Coach Kurt Rambis said he expects Love to be fine.
In other injury news, 7-footer Oleksiy Pecherov (fractured left wrist) participated in the scrimmage a day after just working out with assistant coach Reggie Theus following a lengthy practice. Rambis said Tuesday he does not expect Pecherov to play in Friday’s preseason game against Toronto.
Finally, Bill Laimbeer did his best to keep his head high less than 24 hours after his beloved Tigers were defeated by the Twins in that AL Central tiebreaker you might have heard about. Laimbeer – who spent 28 years in Detroit, 18 either as a Pistons player or WNBA Shock’s coach – got tickets to the game from the Tigers. Rambis said Laimbeer came to Target Center today with a boatload of excuses as to why the Tigers lost. Sounds like Laimbeer really broke down the game well.
“While he was supposed to be working on his scouting reports,” Rambis deadpanned
