5 song lyrics to preview the Suns season

Post#1 » by akaespo » Thu Oct 8, 2009 4:19 pm

Wrote a preview of the Suns season over on our blog. Wanted to share it with you guys. Looking forward to the season and participating more on the forums here.

Five song lyrics to preview the Suns season

Sometimes in life it’s difficult to express one’s self (which is a tough thing when you are a writer). It’s easy to turn to music to find the words you just can’t describe yourself. Although I could probably have described my feelings on the upcoming Suns season without music, I figured it might be a little more entertaining to use five song lyrics to express the emotions we all have deep down inside.

Bruce Springsteen, Thunder Road:”You ain’t a beauty but hey you’re alright”

I never understood this song lyric. Is it a great insult to whoever Springsteen was with at the time? Would a person ever take that as a compliment? Is he admitting he’s settling? It’s just unclear.

It wasn’t until I began to think about this years Suns team that the lyrics became a little less cloudy. The Phoenix Suns certainly aren’t a beauty but it seems as if they’ll be alright this season.

Unlike the last five years, it seems pretty evident to everyone, Steve Nash included, that this team isn’t going to win a championship but a 50+ win season isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The team gets back to the running style they prefer and they dumped 300 pounds of bad energy in the offseason (good luck carrying that on your back, LeBron). The Suns are like the decent looking girl in high school that has accepted who she is and is fine with not dating the starting quarterback–but she’s fun to hang out with. They know they won’t be a defensive juggernaut or even an average defensively, OK who am I kidding, they will be about as good defensively as the Swiss would if someone chose to invade, but they accept that fact. The Suns aren’t going to win any beauty contests but they’ll at least be fun to watch and that’s alright with me.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Give It Away: “Give it away give it away give it away now”

This song could refer to the Suns’ offseason moves, but I digress. The Suns will be running and that means Steve Nash will once again be looked to as the primary creator on the offensive end (on the defensive end he’ll create as well. He’ll create the mismatch most likely exposed by opponents). Last season in the half court set of Terry Porter, Steve Nash “gave it away” to opponents at an unusually high rate. In the wide open system Alvin Gentry is running, expect Nash to be giving the ball away to his teammates rather than shooting or turning it over. He probably won’t put up MVP-caliber numbers but he certainly will regain some of that flash he had in the “Seven Seconds or Less” days.

Will Smith, Swagga: “I got, I got that swagga back, I got that swagga back Yo, do you see that lil’ bop in my step”

Have you heard the comments of Steve Nash, Amar’e Stoudemire and Leandro Barbosa lately? They seem happy and relaxed. Oh, and they have their “swagga back”. Last season the Suns never seemed to have any of the attitude that made them one of the most exciting and energetic teams in the league. At times they seemed to have worse morale than someone who just spent two hours listening to a Michael Scott motivational speech (if you don’t watch The Office insert crappy motivational speaker here) . The coach and roster has changed and so has the attitude surrounding the team. They’ve got the “Swagga” back, and don’t be shocked if that’s enough to get them back to the playoffs as well.

Bruce Springsteen, Born To Run: “Baby, we were born to run”

OK, you caught me, I’m a big Springsteen fan. If you’ve got a problem with me using a second song of his, you are more than welcome to go find another writer breaking down the Suns season based on song lyrics that doesn’t include “The Boss”. If you’re still with me, this lyric is one that definitely fits this year’s team.

The Suns have Steve Nash as their point guard and Amare Stoudemire as their main “star”, if there ever was a team “born to run” it was this one. Last year we saw them try to be something they weren’t and it showed (think Michael Jordan in a Birmingham Barons jersey). It was the Suns “mid-life” identity crisis, but unlike the 40-year old who buys a toupee and a sports car and wants to go fast, Steve Kerr decided to slow down the team’s pace. Like the toupee on the 40-year old, half court basketball just didn’t fit the Suns.

A fast-paced game is back and head coach Alvin Gentry and Steve Kerr know that “Baby, we were born to run”.

Matchbox Twenty, I’ll Believe You When: “I’ll believe you when, Whoa, When everything you say don’t turn out wrong”

Robert Sarver and Steve Kerr have made it clear to Amar’e Stoudemire that he needs to prove his health and team dedication this season if he wants a big money extension with the Suns. I think the Suns should have taken it one step further, telling him to “put his money where his mouth is” (luckily for him it’s a big mouth–so those millions will fit there).

STAT has been all talk, which is impressive for a guy whose young career has been ravaged with injuries, but it’s time for him to back it up. He usually talks about being a better defender during training camp, and by the middle of November gives up on the concept altogether. This year Stoudemire touted his new found leadership skills. If he wants a max contract he has to step up. Suns fans and the Suns front office “will believe him when everything he says don’t turn out wrong”.

HAHA that one is great. One that didn't make the cut but should have For Terry Porter and Shaq, Ben Folds "Song for the Dumped"

So you wanted
to take a[way my fast] break
Slow it down some and
have some space

Well f you too
Give me my money back
Give me my money back
you b
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
to giveme back my (suns) T-Shirt

from last year

First it made me laugh, then it made me cry.

From a few years ago:

This year? I'm going with...

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking.
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older.
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

- - - Pink Floyd, "Time"

Sunrise, sunset....sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

Return to Phoenix Suns
