realgm internet security adware?

Post#1 » by cram » Sun Oct 11, 2009 4:04 am

Anyone else having (every once in awhile) realgm redirect to some internet security site....some adware that pretends its scanning your computer? Happens to me every once in awhile and i figured it was some malware on my computer that my virus-scanner isn't catching...but it happens only on this site.

Get Malwarebytes, it blocks these rogue virus alerts.

my bro computer go infected a few months ago, my virus scanner caught it twice while i was going to this site. start your computer in safe mode (reset and press f5 while the computer is starting)
when windows boot up, go to start>programs>accessories<system tools>system recovery
and chose a date that you remember when it was ok, and click next.

don't know how, but it seems alot more effective against people with older versions of internet explorer, ie 6, there's alot of security holes in it, not only this site, but if your using that security plagued browser, your asking for trouble.

It is definitely from this site & attacks those using Internet Explorer. I work for the insurance commish of Calif & that ad disabled my computer so bad at work that it took the IT guys 4 hours to fix. i am now under official warning not to visit Real Gm during work hours.

At home, i have Firefox and it seems to protect and disable that ad.

The bosses of RealGM did promise to eliminate stuff like that. If it is still a problem, tell your Mods so they can report it - AGAIN.

this sounds pretty awful.... i use FF and I use the AdBlock extension, and i've *never* ran into any problems, so that could be something other users could find helpful...

They did do something - and it worked. it may have been as simple as banning that advertiser. I dont know since I dont have much computer knowledge. The problem did go away.

However, if it is back & bothering people again, be sure to report it.

Firefox+Adblock Plus. The two best things you'll ever download (not porn related :D )

It is hard to get rid of because RealGM cannot control incoming ads, they can choose the category of ads but not the actual ads to display. It is up to their ad provider to regulate these, which is Google Ads and some from Olive Media. The problem is some of the advertisers exploit the embedded code hence, the pop ups. I doubt they did anything before, probably sent a complaint, but Google Ads is huge and unless you can track the specific ad that triggered it it will be hard to get rid of.

If it does happen again though, you should list down the specific ads on the screen make sure you note down the ads on the screen before that occured or possibly just take a screenshot and report it to someone so they can pass it along.

Personally, I just use firefox with this add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
and hardly see anything I don't like.

For everyone who has PC, microsoft has a free Microsfot Security Essentials thing on their website. It has virus scanner, spyware blocker and malware one too. Its actually really good, give it a try.

Whenever you guys think there is a problem that might be happening due to ads being run on RealGM, please post a screenshot. That will help us identify where it potentially is coming from.
