Re: Build an NBA Team (BaNT) - discussion
It's being voted on by us.
You are trying to build the best win now team.
It isn't going to be evaluated directly on a correlation of last seasons stats IMO, that would be the equivalent of a fantasty team, but I could be wrong. You got me curious now as well.

I was under the understanding that dcash was going to arrange a group of "judges" to vote, but I may be incorrect

Players especially young players should be strongly limited on how they performed last season. We can all say player X will break out this season, but there's never been any real proof on them meeting their "potential."
How players will be judged/considered should be made explicitly clear now.

we are going to judge each other. Miller4Ever brings up a good point about people who lost losing interest, but ultimately i'd rather put the onus on us participants who put in the time vs. outside judges. if people flake out, what are u going to do? the game is only as strong as the participants.
teams will be voted on how good a player currently is, how one thinks the roster would mesh, how it matches up with the specific opponent, and how well a poster argues for their team when in a matchup.

This is voted on by us. A lot of it is extrapolating. You look at last season's performances and their performance this season, but you've got to consider fit too. Having two slashing wings without any good defense, tony parker, a jumpshooting PF and a post D center isn't going to be good because you'll get burned without a weakside defender and only one guy spreading the floor. Stuff like that matters, then you have to have the versatility to match up against any team you play against. Maybe TD can't score at the rate he used to, but you can still run an offense through him. How is your team going to disrupt that, etc.

Re: Build an NBA Team (BaNT) - discussion
Yeah, that's what I figured. When I did a game on the PC board I had what I thought was a very good selfless team from the 70's with Oscar Robertson, George Gervin, Julius Erving, Bill Walton, and Nate Thurmond and I covered all my passing and my defense, but sometimes voters don't even bother reading write-ups and I still got burned for my lack of teamwork. That's like saying there's no way Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, and Dwight Howard can possibly get along. But we got a gold medal, didn't we?
BTW, I don't know if you guys know, but Danny Granger is actually a good defender. Lots of people who aren't familiar with him think he's just a scorer, and that his D is akin to Melo's, but he was drafted for his defense, and he's above average, at least (1.5 and 1.0 on blocks and steal, respectively). It's never opposing SF's that burn the Pacers, it's opposing PG's (Shoot right over TJ Ford), SG's (Shoot right over Jarrett Jack), PF's (Like Troy Murphy plays defense), C's (Hibbert fouls out in about 30...seconds of action). Granger may have shifted his focus onto scoring last season, but I think that the team's lack of defense reflected poorly on his defensive performance.
That's the end of my homer spiel.

Very interested to see how the second and third rounds go. IMO the 2nd and 3rd rounds are what decide who wins this.

Rasho decides who wins. Whoever gets him conquers all.
And I took Duncan first because as has been mentioned, he anchors a defense and is a proven winner. I thought it was an obvious choice, but so was Dirk going 2nd. Now is when things start to get hazy.

Minus the fact that Duncan is going into his 13th season and has regressed every year lately.

Hmm, not that it's the end all of everything, but Duncan was 5th in PER this past year, ahead of Kobe, or 1st in this discussion. And this isn't a discussion of future or even building a franchise. This is about right now. If these teams played a tournament this weekend, who'd win. Can't judge them based off what they might be a year, 2, or 5 from now. Plus him being able to play either center or power forward gives me a little flexibility later in the draft. His PER was actually higher last year than the year before, and also 3 years ago. His '06-'07 season was obviously better. In fact his only numbers to go down last year from the year before was his rebounding rate.
But like I said, obviously PER isn't everything. It's mostly the experience, proven winner, line-up versatility, size, and defense that sells me on Duncan in this.

Re: Build an NBA Team (BaNT) - discussion
The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to not have the top 5 guys. A team with LeBron would have the 32nd pick in the draft, netting them somewhere between the 25th to 40th best player, which is SO much better than Mo Williams, All-Star pity selection or no. Much better players than him missed the all-star game, like Deron Williams (He needs a better nickname than D-Will, which I think is the key). That and the fact that every subsequent pick would be vastly superior to their corresponding cast, this game would be a foregone conclusion given smart drafting. Even with 16 teams, it'd be ridiculous.

^I agree. And switching the order in the 3rd round woudn't be nearly enough to make up the difference, either.

It's just interesting to see teams put together like this for once. I'm cool with it either way, but we'd be bandying this idea about for some time now.
Switching the order is so hard in these things, it's hard to decide at exactly what point the middling teams have caught up.

Agreed, I expected late 2nd or so. He's not a bad pairing with TP as long as you get the right PF though.

i didnt want him to slip and have front court pairing of dirk/shaq, duncan/shaq, or bosh/shaq. I think he is still a dominate force and can clog up the paint

Thoughts on the Billups/West tandem?

i really would of prefered billups over TP, he is a true leader, but i think the west pick is a bit early but if he can create the same chemistry he has with CP3 its not a bad pick

I think you underestimate the level of Power Forwards left. His stats last year, were right up there with Al Jefferson and Amare, and though those two can play Center, they are hardly worldly defenders.
