expansion draft

Post#1 » by Hemingway » Sun Oct 18, 2009 9:45 pm

Here is an idea for a game: Say the NBA wanted to give Seattle another team and we had an expansion draft. What order would you protect the guys we have? Consider their talent AND contract situation. Normally you just protect 8 but for this lets give a ranking.

Part 2: If you were an expansion team, what would be the order in which you would want our guys? Building from scratch who would you take? Assume you don't know what other players from other teams will be available.

Interesting scenario, Hemingway. The players I would give to expansion this year in descending order:

1. Mike Sweetney - hasn't made the team so no loss here.
2. Tony Allen - what would Ainge not trade him for?
3. Bill Walker - sadly, wouldn't be surprised if cut, remember Powe?
4. Brian Scalabrine - doubt an expansion team would want him, Scal is safe.
5. Shelden Williams - hasn't impressed, but he's very good as the 5th big man.
6. Lester Hudson - better than expected, high on this list because of position.
7. JR Giddens - looks good when Doc leaves him on the floor, could pick-up 10-15 mpg.
8. Eddie House - fits the offense perfectly but age (31) will become a concern as soon as next year.
9. Glen Davis - only 23 and steadily improving. one of the few young and tested players.
10. Marquis Daniels - great addition as 6/7th man. Can ease into starting role if RR/RA/PP goes down.
11. Rasheed Wallace - despite age (35) he's still a threat. RW will have more than a few 15/10 games.
12. Kendrick Perkins - only 24, widely considered a top-5 center, nightly 10/10 with angry defense.
13. Ray Allen - gets the nod over Perk bc he could still be an all-star this year. Allen = consistency.
14. Kevin Garnett - he's incredible but injury concerns knock KG back 1, maybe 2, spots.
15. Rajon Rondo - eclipses KG because he's 10 years younger and injury-free.
16. Paul Pierce - with 3-4 good years left, he's still the sentimental choice as the lifetime Celtic. While I can't say the same for Allen and even KG, Pierce will never play in another uniform.

II: The most appealing players for an expansion team would be Rondo, Perk, and Baby because of age.

The 8 guys I protect:

1) Rondo
2) Perk
3) Pierce
4) KG
5) Allen
6) Sheed
7) Daniels
8) House

The most attractive guys are Rondo and Perk. Rondo's a rising star and Perk is a beast.

Agree with this except I'd protect Davis over House. Davis is as good as gone if he's left unprotected. He's young, showed he can start on a playoff team, and on a pretty cheap deal. House is probably a bigger part of this team right now, but I couldn't see an expansion team taking him and Davis means more to our future.

That's true Zin5. But I like the way E-House fits on the team and I'm not a big Davis fan (I liked Powe better)

u don't protect sheed, what expansion team will take him, and have him go **** and kill all of ownership. nobody would mess with him.

ray on the wrong side of 30 by the most with 21m salary, don't worry about him either.

I wouldn't risk losing either of those boys. They're too important to us and we can afford to lose the rest of the bunch.

7. Marquis Daniels
8. JR Giddens

To be honest there are only two other guys even under contract for next season. That would be Bill Walker and Lester Hudson.
