Last man cut

Post#1 » by DelaneyRudd » Tue Oct 20, 2009 6:22 pm

19 players currently on the squad, and with Harpring and Miles hurt, it's clear 15 spots will be filled to begin.

It's clear Harris, Johnson and Nelson won't make the cut.

That leaves Dupree, Matthews and Suton battling for 2 spots.

Who gets cut?
Suton has position going for him, Dupree has experience, Matthews has shown the most in the pre-season.

I'm cutting Dupree.

I expected more from Dupree, even at this spot on the roster, since the Jazz claimed to have been waatching him for the last few years. I would cut him.

Matthews has demonstrated that he can shoot the 3.

Suton is a C.

Dupree will be last man cut. When miles comes back, Sutton Will be cut or Fesenko will be traded along with Harpring for a defensive big man while Koufus & sutton will be playing D ball!

I really don't see any of them making it, though Matthews has an outside shot. I'm hoping that Suton will go play overseas for a few years and the Jazz will retain his rights and maybe he'll develop into a decent backup during that span. Doubt it, though.

Why would the Jazz go into the season with only 11 available players?

I think Suton will make the roster; Jazz will not give up a big dude they drafted without trying to develope him. I agree the Jazz should start the season with a 15 man roster. All signs point to Dupree or Mathews making the cut. My call would be to mantain Matthews; he showed good offensive stints out there, he can shoot, he can drive and it seems he can defend decently, and guards don't abound in Jazz roster (no matter what scouting reports say dude's an off-guard in my eyes).

Of course the Jazz can always go after some veteran out there (dudes like Antonio Daniels) or even go after some guy waived by another team (just an example that crossed my mind recently... the Lakers waived this french guy Gelabale...)
Lets just wait and see...

Matthews will make the team, he has been solid, Sloan loves him and we need depth on the wing with CJ out and Korver having knee issues. Everyone else should be cut

The simple reason why Matthews makes the roster over Dupree is that Matthews would come nearly $800,000 cheaper than Dupree. Matthews is a must due to injury. Suton might stick around. Remember the jazz can start with 15 because they will give both players non-guaranteed contracts. Just because both guys make it doesn't mean both will be with the team all season, in fact I doubt both make it the entire season.

Dupree is gone. Matthews stays on roster likely entire season and will get minutes. I wish Jazz would cut Suton because he has no talent. I said that when the Jazz drafted him. Sloan likely keeps him because he went through training camp and pre-season with the team. I would prefer him being cut with Jazz picking up a veteran big man who might be placed on waivers.

So, what was the reason for keeping Harris on?

I can't find one at this point. I think he was a very good player at Syracuse, but has been injured all preseason...

I would imagine they are keeping him on only because he has been injured all preseason. I assume that he gets cut before the season, but the Jazz are giving him every opportunity to get healthy enough to compete.

Dupree and Harris will be cut after last game against Sacramento! That will put jazz at 14. They may then pick up another player who has been cut to fill injury/positiion needs at that time.

Eh, I dunno. He has some qualities but overall he just doesn't seem an NBA caliber player. Somehow he kinda reminds me of Hoffa.
If he went to Europe he could still get a nice paycheck right away even if it's a bit late, but I recall him not being too keen about that, so maybe he'll decide to play in the D-League for a while.
