Magic Johnson bashes Isiah Thomas in book
All fans of 1980’s NBA basketball will forever love what Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, plus Isiah Thomas and other stars from the decade brought to the world of hoops. But rumors in those days didn’t quite spread the way they do now in the age of InsideHoops.com and the internet. Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas are old friends, right? Not so fast. Ian Thompson of Sports Illustrated reports: When he heard the criticisms from his former friend Magic Johnson in a soon-to-be-released book, Isiah Thomas said he’d had enough. And so he began to fight back. “I’m really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years,” said Thomas, the Hall of Fame point guard and former NBA coach and executive, most recently with the Knicks. “I’m totally blindsided by this. Every time that I’ve seen Magic, he has been friendly with me. Whenever he came to a Knick game, he was standing in the tunnel [to the locker room] with me. He and [Knicks assistant coach] Herb [Williams] and I, we would go out to dinner in New York. I didn’t know he felt this way.”

Get ready. This gets heated. More from SI: Much of their story involves Thomas, who as captain of the Detroit Pistons served as a primary threat to the championship ambitions of Bird’s Celtics and Magic’s Lakers. The book offers revelations that have stunned Thomas. Magic addresses years of rumors by finally accusing Thomas of questioning his sexuality after Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991. Magic also admits that he joined with Michael Jordan and other players in blackballing Thomas from the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, saying, “Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics. Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. … Michael didn’t want to play with him. Scottie [Pippen] wanted no part of him. Bird wasn’t pushing for him. Karl Malone didn’t want him. Who was saying, ‘We need this guy?’ Nobody.” “I’m glad that he’s finally had the nerve and the courage to stand up and say it was him, as opposed to letting Michael Jordan take the blame for it all these years,” Thomas responded during one of several interviews he gave to SI.com on Wednesday. “I wish he would have had the courage to say this stuff to me face to face, as opposed to writing it in some damn book to sell and he can make money off it.”

And more from SI, on the topic of Magic’s HIV: “Isiah kept questioning people about it,” Magic says. “I couldn’t believe that. The one guy I thought I could count on had all these doubts. It was like he kicked me in the stomach.” Thomas vehemently denied that he had gossiped behind Magic’s back, pointing out that he knew better than to engage in such hurtful talk. “What most people don’t know is, before Magic had HIV, my brother had HIV,” Thomas said. “My brother died of HIV, AIDS, drug abuse. So I knew way more about the disease, because I was living with it in my house.” “I felt awful for him; I felt awful for everybody,” Thomas said to SI.com. “But I knew enough at that time that he didn’t have to retire. The ‘blood’ thing we do in the NBA — where we stop the game because of blood on somebody’s shirt and all that ceremonious stuff — we’re not stopping HIV/AIDS that way. We still do it out of some insane fear that came about when Karl Malone and everybody was saying they weren’t playing if Magic was playing.”

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Detroit Pistons: It's likely the Timberwolves will be without both of their starting frontcourt players tonight, which makes life pretty tough on their guards - especially going against Detroit, a very talented backcourt team. Tayshaun Prince is expected to be out for the Pistons due to a toe injury and Kwame Brown may sit out to nurse his aching hand, as well.

Scott in Sydney:
How often will we see Gordon at the 2 and Rip at the 3? Perhaps even with Prince at the 4 in Detroit?

Joel Brigham:
It's gonna happen. Those three guys are being paid too much money not to all see 30+ points a game, and the only way that's going to get done is through the scenario you've outlined above. I see absolutely no way Rip can guard Paul Piece and LeBron James and Caron Butler, but it is what it is. All the more reason I think spending all that money on Ben Gordon was kind of silly considering their needs (some of which--cough, cough--CENTER--still need to be addressed).

Aldridge Gets His Deal: Reports surfaced last night suggesting that the Portland Trail Blazers and forward LaMarcus Aldridge reached terms on a five-year $65 million deal, that could swell to $70 million with achievable incentives. For weeks sources close to the situation said Portland would not go higher than $11 million, however the deal as reported which is not yet official looks to be an average of $13 million per season, exactly what LaMarcus' camp was seeking from the beginning of the talks.

The deal when finalized will likely look something like this:
1 2 3 4 5 Total
$10,750,000 $11,878,750 $13,007,500 $14,136,250 $15,265,000 $65,037,500

LaMarcus told the Oregonian's Jason Quick that the deal was not complete yet, but he expected it to close soon.

Tom Enlund of the Journal Sentinel: "There are any number of factors that will determine how successful the Milwaukee Bucks will be this season, not the least of which will be at the foul line. And it won't just be how well the Bucks shoot their free throws that will be important, but also how often they visit the foul line. The Bucks haven't fared very well in either department during the preseason as they have made 135 of 195 free throws (69.2%) while their opponents have made 209 of 276 (75.7%). In other words, the opposition has made more free throws than the Bucks have attempted. That's partly due to the fact that in the first two exhibition games Minnesota made 50 of 56 free throws and Detroit made 31 of 46, but there are other factors involved also. 'We've had two really high (opponents') numbers that have skewed it a little bit,' said coach Scott Skiles after Wednesday's practice. 'But we have fouled too much. The thing that has bothered me more, though, is our free-throw percentage. I don't know yet if we're going to be a team that is going to get to the line a lot or not.' "

Oops, Not Supposed To Say That: Yesterday in this space we covered Atlanta forward Al Horford's radio admission that he and Celtics guard Paul Pierce made a friendly wager at the foul line during the 2008 NBA Playoffs. Horford explained Pierce never paid up however the league was none too happy to hear the story.

The NBA has very strict and punitive rules about gambling on sports, and to admit that a player or group of players were gambling on the outcome of a game set off alarm bells. Horford on his Twitter account yesterday made it clear that there was nothing to the bet and he was having fun on the radio.

Some of my comments from the radio interview I did yesterday with 790 the zone were overblown. I was joking. Paul Pierce and I did not make a bet during the playoffs in 2008. I do not bet on basketball or any other sports.

Scott in sydney:
Do you think the Pistons have one of the best set of guards in the league?

John Denton:
The Pistons have good guards, but I wouldn't call any of them great. Collectively, they are very good, but so much of the NBA is about individual greatness and I just don't get that from this group.Ben Gordon is one of the NBA's five best fourth-quarter shotmakers and he'll give the Pistons some much needed offensive punch. Rip Hamilton is still a fine player, but clearly he's starting to slow down. And Rodney Stuckey whiffed last season after Detroit turned the team over to him and hoped he'd become a star. You have to wonder now if Stuckey has what it takes to be an elite point guard. So they are good, just not great.

BnaRd in Knick Fan:
Hello John - do you think my knicks can sneak up on to the 8th seed? what are Eastern 8 seeds for playoffs?

John Denton:
The Knicks don't always play well, but they do play extremely hard and that's a credit to Mike D'Antoni. He's clearly one of the best coaches in the league and players have the utmost respect for his mind as a coach. But I'm just not sure the Knicks have enough talent yet to push their way into the playoffs. Brighter days are ahead for the Knicks, but not this season.
Here's my top eight in the East:
1. Orlando
2. Boston
3. Cleveland
4. Philadelphia (You heard it here first!!!)
5. Atlanta
6. Miami
7. Washington
8. Detroit

Foyle Undergoes Knee Surgery
Adonal Foyle, a reserve center for the Orlando Magic, has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the team said yesterday.

The team said there's no timetable for Foyle's return. The one-time Cardinal O'Hara star hasn't played in the preseason and has participated in only a few practices due to the knee.

Dionte Christmas Cut by 76ers
Dionte Christmas' hopes of making his hometown team ended yesterday when the former Temple scorer was one of two free agents waived by the 76ers. The 6-foot-5 Christmas, a shooting guard who played at Fels High and Philadelphia Lutheran Christian, was invited to the Sixers' camp after being bypassed in the June NBA draft. He played in four preseason games, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 7.5 minutes per outing.

Aldridge, Blazers Ink Extension
After what turned out to be a curiously long contract negotiating period, the Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to terms on a contract extension with power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. According to Chad Ford of ESPN.com, the deal is for five years and $65-million, with the potential to get as high as $70-million with incentives.

The Blazers also reached an extension agreement with shooting guard Brandon Roy earlier this summer, worth $80-million over the same five year period. Aldridge had reportedly sought a similar deal.

In the summer of 2008, Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard told HOOPSWORLD that Blazers' owner Paul Allen "doesn't lose his free agents," implying that the Blazers would keep their drafted players Aldridge and Roy because the organization simply valued their talent too much to lose them for financial reasons.

West, Wright Suffer Minor Injuries
Starters David West and Julian Wright both left Wednesday’s practice with injuries, but Coach Byron Scott said he will not have any updated information until Thursday. Scott said West’s injury is either to his shin or ankle, and Wright injured his right knee after trying to block a shot.

Wright had his knee wrapped and West limped noticeably on his way to the locker just before practice ended. "I’m not sure if its ankle or shin, that’s a question for (trainer) Terry Kofler,'' Scott said. "It is Julian Wright's right knee, a little sore but we’ll know more about it tomorrow.''

Scott said starting center Emeka Okafor will not play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Golden State Warriors or against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. Power forward Ike Diogu practiced Wednesday and could play against the Warriors.

Jazz Waive Dupree, Harris
Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor announced today that the team has waived forward Ronald Dupree and guard Paul Harris. The Jazz roster now stands at 14.

Dupree (6-7, 209, LSU) has played in 154 regular season NBA games in five seasons with Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota and Seattle. He appeared in seven preseason contests with the Jazz, averaging 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 11.6 minutes a game.

Harris (6-4, 230, Syracuse) went undrafted in the 2009 NBA Draft after three seasons at Syracuse. He suffered a moderate right ankle sprain prior to training camp and did not appear in a preseason game with the Jazz.

Book: Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan kept Isiah Thomas off Olympic team
Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and other players conspired to keep former Pistons great Isiah Thomas off the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, Johnson admits in his new book. "Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics," Johnson writes in "When The Game Was Ours," scheduled to be released Nov. 4. Details of the book were reported by Ian Thomsen of Sports Illustrated. The book is co-written by Johnson, Larry Bird and Jackie MacMullan.

Added Johnson: "Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. ... Michael didn't want to play with him. Scottie (Pippen) wanted no part of him. Bird wasn't pushing for him. Karl Malone didn't want him. Who was saying, 'We need this guy'? Nobody." Chuck Daly was coach of that 1992 team that won the gold medal at Barcelona. He was coach of Thomas and the Pistons at the time.

Johnson also accuses Thomas of questioning Johnson's sexual orientation after the former Michigan State star was diagnosed with HIV in 1991, according to Thomsen's report. "Isiah kept questioning people about it," Johnson writes. "I couldn't believe that. The one guy I thought I could count on had all these doubts. It was like he kicked me in the stomach." Thomas, now the coach at Florida International, responded to the book by telling Sports Illustrated: "I'm really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years. I'm totally blindsided by this. Every time that I've seen Magic, he has been friendly with me."

Preseason Game 7: Timberwolves @ Pistons
Tonight Detroit will return to the Palace with hopes of ending their three game preseason skid. After starting the preseason strong at 3-0, Detroit has lost the last three away from the Palace, the last two being blow outs. John Kuester says that tonight will be a dry run for the games that count in the standings. He'll not only be looking to figure out a set starting lineup, but a complete rotation for the first game next Tuesday against the Grizzlies.

Unfortunately, he may have to do that without two of his regular starters. Tayshaun Prince is likely done for the preseason, as he is still being bothered by an injury to his big toe, and Kwame Brown is being bothered by an injured wrist. He had x-rays taken this morning due to the fact it has worsened over the past few days. Despite the facts we have gathered, Kuester is downplaying both injuries, saying that he is hopeful both will be available tonight. These are pretty contrasting reports, so who really knows?

Some reads to keep you busy until tip off tonight, which is at 7:30 PM EST. No TV:

Kwame Brown to have X-rays on hand as injuries mount for Pistons ahead of opener
The Detroit Pistons want to improve their play on defense before the regular season begins next week. But it might prove difficult without two of their top defensive stoppers. One week before the start of the regular season, center Kwame Brown and forward Tayshaun Prince still are recovering from nagging injuries. Brown said after practice Wednesday he was scheduled to receive X-rays on Thursday morning on his injured left hand, which has worsened in recent days. Brown is questionable for Thursday's preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.Meanwhile, Prince's status also is questionable because of an injured big toe, which he cut and sprained in a preseason game Oct. 13 against Washington in Grand Rapids. Prince said while the cut on the bottom of his toe has healed quickly, the sprain still bothers him."Practice isn't game speed. I'm out here practicing and I still feel uncomfortable, so I can imagine at game speed that it might be worse," he said. "I'll just see how it feels the rest of the day (Wednesday), get some more treatment and see how I feel when I come in for shoot-around (today)."I'm not back yet. I practiced (yesterday), but that doesn't mean I'm back."

Brown and Prince have been solid defensively for a team that otherwise has struggled on that end of the floor. Detroit has allowed 101.6 points per game this preseason -- good for 20th in the NBA entering play Wednesday -- and 114 per game in back-to-back losses to Dallas and Memphis. "This is a different team this year," Prince said. "We are all coming from a different atmosphere than last year. We gotta find a way to make it work and gel together, and do it as quickly as possible. "We'd rather (gel) sooner rather than later, but when it happens, it happens. You can't set a date on it or anything like that." Brown, who practiced Wednesday, was injured early in training camp and since has worn a wrap around his left hand. But he said it has become difficult to close the hand because of swelling around the knuckles, which affects his ability to catch passes and dribble to his left. "I've been just trying to focus on things I can do, like getting teammates open and rebounding, running, playing good defense. But it's definitely hindering a little bit of my game. It's making me not as aggressive as I want to be."Every practice, I'm getting whacked, so it's getting worse by the day."

The 6-foot-11, 270-pound center is in competition to start in the Pistons' front court. He averages 7.7 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game this preseason. While Brown seemed concerned about the injury, Detroit coach John Kuester expressed optimism regarding his status. "No," Kuester said when asked if he was concerned about Brown's availability against Minnesota. "He's practiced every day, and he's worked extremely hard and he's really improved. ... I feel he has made great strides since the beginning of the preseason."Kuester also is hopeful to have Prince in the lineup against the Timberwolves. Prince was injured when Washington's LaVale McGee kicked his foot in the Pistons' 101-98 loss to the Wizards at Van Andel Arena last week."After the timeout happened, I started walking to the bench and noticed my socks started to feel a little wet, mushy. I said, 'I know I'm not bleeding or anything like that,' " Prince said."Took my sock off and, man, wouldn't you know it, blood (was) coming straight out of the bottom of my foot."

Memphis Grizzlies will ask Allen Iverson to come off the bench
Allen Iverson won’t be starting for the Memphis Grizzlies to open the season, according to The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal (Hat tip: Full-Court Press).

Veteran guard Allen Iverson will start the regular season as a reserve when the Grizzlies host the Detroit Pistons Oct. 28 in their home opener. Iverson, 34, has missed the entire preseason schedule because of a partially torn left hamstring. He hasn’t participated in training camp practices since Oct. 4. Griz coach Lionel Hollins said there is no choice but to gradually work in Iverson. "He hasn’t had a chance to perform," Hollins said. "And when he does come back he’ll be way behind with how we’re doing things. So when he gets into a game, it’ll be limited. That’s probably where we’ll wind up at the start of the season."

I nearly headline this post, “Allen Iverson will come off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies.” Then, I realized that might be inaccurate. I’ll believe he actually comes off the bench when I see it. I’m sure this will end well.
