Eric (Lake Orion, Mich.): What’s the next step the Pistons need to take to get in the top three seeds in the Eastern Division?

Langlois: The reality is that right now there appears to be a wide divide between the top three – Boston, Cleveland and Orlando – and the rest of the East, Eric. The only next step is to get better – develop the players on your roster and figure out ways to get better players from outside the roster. Right now, the Pistons can reasonably expect at least moderate, and perhaps significant, improvement from several players on their own roster, including young veterans like Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum and rookies like Austin Daye, Jonas Jerebko and DaJuan Summers.

Isiah blasts Magic for comments made in book
Isiah Thomas spoke to SI.com's Ian Thomsen on Wednesday about the criticisms from his former friend Magic Johnson in “When The Game Was Ours,” a soon-to-be-released book he co-wrote with Larry Bird and author Jackie MacMullan.

Much of the their story involves Thomas, who as captain of the Detroit Pistons served as a primary threat to the championship ambitions of Bird’s Celtics and Magic’s Lakers. When Thomas heard the criticisms, he said he had enough and began to fight back. Magic declined to be interviewed for the SI.com story. “I’m really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years,'' said Thomas, the Hall of Fame Pistons point guard and former NBA coach and executive. “I’m totally blindsided by this."Thomsen writes about the books’ revelations and Thomas’ reaction:

Magic’s most shocking accusation, however, is that Thomas was responsible for spreading rumors that Johnson was gay or bisexual after Johnson tested positive for HIV, forcing his retirement at age 32. ‘Isiah kept questioning people about it,’ Magic says. ‘I couldn't believe that. The one guy I thought I could count on had all these doubts. It was like he kicked me in the stomach.’ Thomas vehemently denied that he had gossiped behind Magic’s back, pointing out that he knew better than to engage in such hurtful talk. ‘What most people don’t know is, before Magic had HIV, my brother had HIV,’ Thomas said. ‘My brother died of HIV, AIDS, drug abuse. So I knew way more about the disease, because I was living with it in my house.’ His brother, Gregory Thomas, died five years ago, Isiah said.

Wolves' Love has successful surgery, will miss 6-8 weeks
The Minnesota Timberwolves are calling surgery to repair forward Kevin Love's broken left hand a success.

Love had the surgery on Tuesday in New York and the team said Thursday that everything went well. Dr. Andrew Weiland inserted three screws into Love's hand, which was broken during a preseason game on Oct. 16 against Chicago. Love is expected to miss six to eight weeks while recovering.

He averaged 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in the preseason. He averaged 11.1 points and 9.1 rebounds last season and led the NBA in offensive rebounding percentage, the first rookie to do so since Hakeem Olajuwon 24 years ago.

Welcome back, Bill
Thursday's game will mark the first time former Pistons "Bad Boy" Bill Laimbeer will coach against his former team.

Laimbeer, whose jersey graces the rafters of The Palace of Auburn Hills and Detroit's practice facility after he helped lead the team to back-to-back championships in 1989-90, signed with Minnesota as an assistant coach in the offseason.

Before that, he won three WNBA championships with the Detroit Shock before resigning this past summer.

Kuester ready for officals' return
Kuester seemed pleased when asked about the possibility of the NBA's locked-out referees returning to the court sometime next week.

"That would be nice," Kuester said, smiling. "The league will take care of that."

Kwame Brown to have X-rays on hand as injuries mount for Pistons ahead of opener
The Detroit Pistons want to improve their play on defense before the regular season begins next week. But it might prove difficult without two of their top defensive stoppers. One week before the start of the regular season, center Kwame Brown and forward Tayshaun Prince still are recovering from nagging injuries. Brown said after practice Wednesday he was scheduled to receive X-rays on Thursday morning on his injured left hand, which has worsened in recent days. Brown is questionable for Thursday's preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Meanwhile, Prince's status also is questionable because of an injured big toe, which he cut and sprained in a preseason game Oct. 13 against Washington in Grand Rapids. Prince said while the cut on the bottom of his toe has healed quickly, the sprain still bothers him."Practice isn't game speed. I'm out here practicing and I still feel uncomfortable, so I can imagine at game speed that it might be worse," he said. "I'll just see how it feels the rest of the day (Wednesday), get some more treatment and see how I feel when I come in for shoot-around (today)."I'm not back yet. I practiced (yesterday), but that doesn't mean I'm back."

Brown and Prince have been solid defensively for a team that otherwise has struggled on that end of the floor. Detroit has allowed 101.6 points per game this preseason -- good for 20th in the NBA entering play Wednesday -- and 114 per game in back-to-back losses to Dallas and Memphis. "This is a different team this year," Prince said. "We are all coming from a different atmosphere than last year. We gotta find a way to make it work and gel together, and do it as quickly as possible. "We'd rather (gel) sooner rather than later, but when it happens, it happens. You can't set a date on it or anything like that." Brown, who practiced Wednesday, was injured early in training camp and since has worn a wrap around his left hand. But he said it has become difficult to close the hand because of swelling around the knuckles, which affects his ability to catch passes and dribble to his left. "I've been just trying to focus on things I can do, like getting teammates open and rebounding, running, playing good defense. But it's definitely hindering a little bit of my game. It's making me not as aggressive as I want to be. "Every practice, I'm getting whacked, so it's getting worse by the day."

The 6-foot-11, 270-pound center is in competition to start in the Pistons' front court. He averages 7.7 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game this preseason. While Brown seemed concerned about the injury, Detroit coach John Kuester expressed optimism regarding his status. "No," Kuester said when asked if he was concerned about Brown's availability against Minnesota. "He's practiced every day, and he's worked extremely hard and he's really improved. ... I feel he has made great strides since the beginning of the preseason." Kuester also is hopeful to have Prince in the lineup against the Timberwolves. Prince was injured when Washington's LaVale McGee kicked his foot in the Pistons' 101-98 loss to the Wizards at Van Andel Arena last week. "After the timeout happened, I started walking to the bench and noticed my socks started to feel a little wet, mushy. I said, 'I know I'm not bleeding or anything like that,' " Prince said. "Took my sock off and, man, wouldn't you know it, blood (was) coming straight out of the bottom of my foot."

Sixers exercise their contract options on young trio
The Philadelphia 76ers have picked up contract options on three players, including starting small forward Thaddeus Young. Sixers president Ed Stefanski says the team exercised options for Young and power forwards Marreese Speights and Jason Smith on Thursday. All three are under contract through the 2010-11 season.

The 21-year-old Young averaged 15.3 points last year as the 76ers made the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

The 16th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Speights averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds as a rookie. Smith, a 7-footer acquired in a draft-night trade in 2007, averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in his first season before missing last year with a torn ACL.

Isiah 'hurt' by Magic's comments
Isiah Thomas told SI.com that he is "really hurt" over criticisms levied by Magic Johnson in a new book chronicling the careers of Johnson and Larry Bird. "I'm really hurt, and I really feel taken advantage of for all these years,'' Thomas told SI.com. "I'm totally blindsided by this. Every time that I've seen Magic, he has been friendly with me. Whenever he came to a Knick game, he was standing in the tunnel [to the locker room] with me. He and [Knicks assistant coach] Herb [Williams] and I, we would go out to dinner in New York. I didn't know he felt this way.'' I wish he would have had the courage to say this stuff to me face to face, as opposed to writing it in some damn book to sell anIn the book, titled "When The Game Was Ours," an advance copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, Johnson said the failed relationship with Thomas is "the biggest personal disappointment of my life . . . nothing else is even close."

Johnson also contends that after he was diagnosed with HIV and retired in 1991, Thomas started questioning the former Los Angeles Lakers star's sexuality. Johnson also describes his role in keeping Thomas off the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team, according to SI.com. "Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics," Johnson said in the book, according to SI.com. "Nobody on that team wanted to play with him . . . Michael [Jordan] didn't want to play with him. Scottie [Pippen] wanted no part of him. Bird wasn't pushing for him. Karl Malone didn't want him. Who was saying, 'We need this guy?' Nobody." Thomas, now coaching at FIU in Miami, said he declined a chance to be interviewed for the book. He appears on at least 26 pages of the book, which Johnson and Bird wrote with author Jackie MacMullan, a former Boston Globe reporter currently with ESPN.com. FIU had no immediate comment. Thomas' spokesman said the remarks were accurate. Thomas was scheduled to be available to reporters later Thursday night at an alumni event.

The book comments by Johnson are the latest salvo in a strained relationship, once made famous by the pre-NBA Finals kiss and a pair of crowd-pleasing 1-on-1 battles in the final moments of the 1992 NBA All-Star Game. But even during those 1988 Finals, Johnson and Thomas let their competitive sides boil over. In Johnson's words, he and Thomas are now "cordial. That's about it." Last fall, Johnson said he would not recommend Thomas for any other NBA jobs, after Thomas' rocky stints with both the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks."I wish he would have had the courage to say this stuff to me face to face, as opposed to writing it in some damn book to sell and he can make money off it," Thomas said to SI.com. Thomas also told SI.com that he did not question Johnson's sexuality, adding that Johnson "acted and responded off some really bad information that he got."

Pistons banged up heading into tonight's game vs. Minnesota
Ben Wallace will not play tonight after bumping knees with a teammate earlier this week. Kwame Brown will have X-rays on his hand tonight, with the results likely to come before tip-off.

And Tayshaun Prince's sprained right toe injury has healed to where he's likely to play tonight, although his minutes will likely be limited.

With Wallace out, head coach John Kuester said Charlie Villanueva will make his first start as a Piston.

WOLVES @ PISTONS
Wolves @ Pistons 8 PM - The Palace at Auburn Hills
WHERE TO WATCH: FS North
Scouting Report:
Big Picture
:
Detroit was the picture of excellence in the Eastern Conference. Veteran leadership, a dedicated approach to defense, and teamwork led to four consecutive division titles and an NBA championship in 2004. General manager Joe Dumars shook the foundation of the franchise by shipping fan favorite Chauncey Billups to Denver last season. This summer, Rasheed Wallace, Allen Iverson, and Antonio McDyess changed addresses. Dumars began the rebuilding process with the acquisition of free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. After a 39-43 record last year, the Pistons will either jump back into the playoff mix this season or prepare for the LeBron sweepstakes in 2010.

Backcourt:
Rodney Stuckey faces the daunting task of replacing a Detroit legend at the point guard position. Entering his third season, Stuckey should take a giant leap this year as the floor leader for the Pistons. Stuckey has scored 20-plus points in three of the six preseason games. The true leader for Detroit is 10-year veteran Richard Hamilton in the backcourt. Hamilton missed 15 games last year but managed to average 18.3 points per game. Opposing defenders hope Hamilton slows a bit after chasing the sharp shooter around the perimeter for almost a decade. Pistons fans should be intrigued to see how Gordon will fit within the offense. Gordon led the Bulls in scoring last season and is expected to play a similar role off the bench to provide instant scoring.
Frontcourt:
A familiar face suits up at the small forward spot for Detroit. Rangy defender, Tayshaun Prince averaged a career high in minutes and rebounds last season. Prince is rock solid with a quiet but steady demeanor on the court. A not so quiet presence departed from the Pistons frontcourt this summer. Rasheed Wallace bolted for Boston in a last ditch effort to snag another championship. Despite all of his on-the-court antics, Wallace is a strong weak side defender and prolific shooter from the 3-point line. Former Bucks power forward Charlie Villanueva will look to fill the scoring void after an impressive 2008-09. Villanueva averaged a career-high 16.2 points per game for Milwaukee and grabbed 6.7 boards. For Minnesota, Al Jefferson will miss the final two preseason games with flu-like symptoms. Rambis continues to shift the lineup while dealing with the loss of Jefferson and Love.

What To Look For:
Two new head coaches square off tonight at the Palace with Kurt Rambis taking on the Pistons first-year coach John Kuester. Wolves' assistant coach and original member of the Bad Boys, Bill Laimbeer makes an appearance on the Minnesota sidelines. Detroit is 3-3 this preseason while the Wolves fell to just 1-5 after a loss to Denver on Tuesday night.

The Pistons vs. The Timberwolves
The 3-3 Pistons host their last preseason game a tonight at 7:30 PM at the Palace of Auburn Hills tonight against (YES) Bill Laimbeer and the 1-5 Minnesota Timberwolves. Yes I know Bill’s not the head coach nor is he playing, but it’s nice to mention his name whenever I can. Check out his return video interview at Pistons.com.

The game isn’t on television, but you can listen to it from your radio on WWJ AM 950 or follow the gamecast over at NBA.com. And if you cant do either…make sure you read a little on one of my favorites Antonio McDyess (Ice 4Dyess).

The season is right around the corner and PISTONS WEEK starts this Sunday at FSN!

Cavs Waive Barrett, Robinson, Watkins
The Cleveland Cavaliers announced today that they have waived guards Andre Barrett and Russell Robinson and center Darryl Watkins.

Barrett played in four games during the preseason, averaging 5.8 points and 4.3 assists in 17.5 minutes per game while Robinson played in five games (one start) and averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 assists in 20.0 minutes per game. Watkins appeared in four games and totaled two points, eight rebounds and one block in 28 minutes played.

The Cavaliers roster now stands at 15.

Ben Wallace sits out Pistons exhibition
The Pistons were without Ben Wallace on Thursday for an exhibition game against Minnesota. Wallace was slowed in practice this week, coach John Kuester said, after bumping knees with another player

Rather than risk any further discomfort, with the regular season beginning Wednesday, the Pistons rested Wallace and started CharlieVillanueva in Wallace's place. Kuester said Tayshaun Prince (right toe) and Kwame Brown (left hand) were scheduled to play. Both players expressed doubt for their availability earlier in the week.

Kuester said the team hadn't gotten test results for Brown's hand yet. Brown had X-rays Thursday morning for his hand, which he said Wednesday had been feeling steadily worse.

Pistons Frontcourt Preview: A few new guys can't fill the hole in my heart left by Sheed
I miss Sheed.

That's my three word summary of the Pistons' frontcourt. I suppose I could add: where's Sheed? I wonder what the Sheed-a-claus is doing right now? How about the Sheedster predicting 72 wins, eh?

Whatever. It's a bad breakup. Time will heal it, hopefully. So what do the Pistons have left?
