Chris Wilcox: I once made an almost fatal error - two years ago, I mentioned that Wilcox belongs in the D-League in front of the content director. I don't remember the exact content of the lashing I endured but I do know to check my stats before spewing my verbal diarrhea on these here internets. Only now, after two years, am I learning to trust my instincts over numbers again, but I'm still a shadow of my former self.

Oh, and about Wilcox, what is it going to take to motivate this guy? He's played on many bad teams in Seattle, Oklahoma City and New York where he had a chance get touches and put up numbers but barely earned another contract this year. He's a rotation big in the league, maybe the third or fourth, which is probably where he will play this year.

Ben Wallace: My first reaction when they signed big Ben: LOL. Not like the fake "LOL" that you text your mates but a real "laugh out loud" complete with teeth showing and cheeks hurting three minutes after I forgot what I was laughing about.

It's a cute signing. No reason to feel strongly about it either way ... and I don't. I'm expecting nothing more than 10-15 minutes a night and about 5-7 rebounds a night, decent defense. The stats might say he can do more but the stats aren't playing garbage time with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first half of last season. It will be cool to hear the bell again.

Kwame Brown: Read more about Brown than you have ever wanted to know here. I hope he gets better but I still have my doubts. Anything above 8/7/1 would be a pleasant surprise.

Jason Maxiell: Honestly, haven't read/heard much about his preseason? Heard he was out of the rotation already, really?

Charlie V (not going to try spelling his last name again): V and I spent his rookie season together on the Raps. Watched him closely and was really impressed. Problem is, I don't think he's gotten much better since. Dude's gonna score the ball and I'm sure it's weird for Pistons' fans to have a frontcourt starter who actually wants to score.

Combined, we have one power forward for now (V) and the future and four space fillers till Joe Dumars unveils his master plan, which as evidenced by the random V signing after he only became available a few days before free agency began, doesn't exist. Here's the irony of my displeasure - I think it's going to work when you throw a little Tay-Tay sauce on there.

The best chance of this Pistons' lineup working is going super small for long spurts. V at center, Tay at the four and Rip, Gordon, Stuckey at the wings. Every single person on the floor in that lineup can score in a variety of ways (except verdict's still out on Stuckey's jumper). They could play fast, three-point line to three-point line, and would be super fun to watch. Would they struggle on the defensive end? Probably, sometimes against the bigger teams (Orlando, Boston, Cleveland) but not really against everyone else out East. If nothing else, they should be finally able to beat Atlanta with a small lineup, maybe even Utah if they're lucky.

Overall: The Eastern Conference is much stronger this year (Raps, Wizards much better) and I expect the Pistons to struggle early trying to incorporate V and Gordon while Stuckey once again attempts to discover his identity on the court - to point guard or not point guard?

The Pistons have a brutal November - vs. Orl, @ Tor, @ Orl, vs. Phi, vs. Cha, @ Was, vs. Dal, @ LAL, @ Por, @ Uta, @ Pho, vs Cle, vs.LAC, vs. Atl - all potential playoff teams. That's not gonna help. It will balance out by the end of the year so no reason to get discouraged by a poor start to the season.

I have the Pistons penciled in around 38-42 wins, based on talent alone, which is enough to have them tusslin' for a playoff spot late in the year. Jai Jerebko ... just like Jai Hind.

Pecherov helps Minnesota over Detroit in preseason
Oleksiy Pecherov had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 122-114 preseason victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night.

Corey Brewer added 21 points for Minnesota (2-5) and Ryan Gomes scored 19. Rodney Stuckey led Detroit (3-4) with 25. Both teams were missing key post players. Detroit had Ben Wallace (knee) and Kwame Brown (hand) on the bench, while Kevin Love (hand) and Al Jefferson (flu-like symptoms) were out for Minnesota.

Detroit led 64-61 after an offensive-minded first half. The Pistons shot 60 percent, while the Timberwolves were at 59 percent. The Pistons expanded the lead to nine points, but several turnovers led to a 22-4 run by the Timberwolves, who led 93-85 at quarter's end.

Postgame Quotes - October 22, 2009
Preseason Game #7
Pistons Head Coach John Kuester

(On game) “Our energy level in the beginning of the game and the beginning of the third, we did a nice job, but sustaining that for 48 minutes, we didn't give the energy that we had early on. Very rarely are you going to shoot 58 percent from the field, 90 percent from the foul line, have 21 assists, 15 turnovers and scored a 114 points and I'm coming in here and saying 'we lost'. That's disappointing.”

(On Rodney Stuckey’s play) “Rodney Stuckey ran the team the way I wanted the team to be run. He got people involved in the game and I thought he did an outstanding job taking care of the ball. He did an outstanding job, I was very pleased with him.”

(On Charlie Villanueva) “Charlie gave us a good spurt in the beginning of the first and the second period. Having his first out here, I thought he played solid. One thing that is encouraging is he did have a double-double in the amount of time he played. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Charlie's going to be very helpful for us.”

Pistons Forward Charlie Villanueva
“I played decent. I felt pretty good out there. Conditioning was fine, my hamstring was fine. I felt pretty comfortable out there.”

“This is unacceptable. We just have to pick it up on the defense. Offensively, you can see us, we don’t have a problem at all. We just have to play together as a team. It seems that at the end of the third quarter we made a run. It just seems like they picked it up more and we just kind of got away from what we were doing.”

“They made some big shots. Not to discredit anything from Minnesota, we should have beaten this team.”

Timberwolves Head Coach Kurt Rambis
(On the game) “We have been working with the guys and stressing upon them how critical it is that they play together. We have been working on that, playing hard, playing through each possession, moving the ball offensively, executing and they really did all that tonight. I told them after the game that a win is great and I’m happy for us, happy for them that they got the win, but I was proud of the fact of how they played. We did a lot of good things out there and it made a difference. Even when they got on a run to start the third quarter our guys regrouped, gathered and started playing more together and we got ourselves back in the ballgame.”

(On their adjustments) “I think that our guys got composed and we have made the mistake of not doing that in about every ballgame so far. So they’ve had a history of trying to resolve it themselves individually and it’s worked out bad for them every time they’ve tried it.”

Timberwolves Guard Corey Brewer
(On playing for Rambis) “He’s been good and it has been a learning experience for us and him. I think that he is doing a good job of keeping us on the edge and keeping us upbeat and ready to play. It’s good for us when he is calm because we are a young team and we need a coach like that who learns with us and helps us learn.”

(On offensive output) “It was great. We were moving the ball and everybody was playing together, which is what we have to do when we don’t have those players like Al (Jefferson) and Kevin (Love). We feel like we can play though and we did a good job tonight. We just have to be patient with our offense and the triangle and then we should get all the shots that we want.”

Timberwolves Center Ryan Gomes
(On the win) “We are happy to finally get a win and we want to start getting a little bit of continuity and chemistry before the regular season starts. We were happy to come in here and do what we did. We shot the ball well, moved it well and everybody got opportunities. We were able to score, cut hard and we did everything that coach was asking us for and we’ve started to put it together from what we’ve learned in training camp. We have to continue to look at this tape and use it as an example of all the things we put together in one game instead of putting pieces together from a bunch of games.”

(On their offense) “The offense that we were running gives everyone an opportunity. If you look at tonight it is all ball movement. With us you move the ball, cut hard and you get lay-ups and easy opportunities. We also got out on the fast break tonight. Coach wants to run and play up-tempo so we need to take this as a lesson learned just like we take a lesson learned with a loss.”

Minnesota 122, Pistons 114
Impressions after Minnesota defeats the Pistons 122-114. 1) The scary part about this loss was the fact the Timberwolves were missing Al Jefferson and Kevin Love, arguably the team's two best players. Imagine how many points the Timberwolves could have put on the scoreboard with those two available. 2) The Pistons have to play harder on the defensive end. Simple as that. The effort wasn't good at times. 3) If there was any doubt about starting Kwame Brown and Ben Wallace, that was erased after this game. The Pistons need their defensive ability at the start of games. 4) If Brown is able to play, that is. That left hand is bandaged tightly, and Brown said the other day it was feeling worse. The Pistons are awaiting test results. 5) Austin Daye didn't play against the Timberwolves. Kuester said don't read anything into it, but I'd be surprised to see Daye in the rotation early in the season. Daye is also bothered by a sore foot. 6) I had no idea who Minnesota center Oleksiy Pecherov was before this game, but I do now. A good shooter from the perimeter, willing to defend, and the type of player who can succeed in the NBA these days. 7) As good as Will Bynum has been most of this exhibition season, he made no impact this evening.

Defense disappoints in loss
All that time the Pistons spent working on defense this week didn't help much. They still gave up points too easily and often, in losing, 122-114, Thursday to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Detroit is 3-4 in the exhibition season. It closes out the exhibition season tonight in Milwaukee before opening the regular season Wednesday in Memphis. The difference was the Timberwolves outscoring the Pistons, 25-8, to end the third quarter, giving the Timberwolves to a 93-85 lead.

Rodney Stuckey scored 27 points for the Pistons, Richard Hamilton 19 and Charlie Villanueva 17. Corey Brewer led Minnesota with 21 points and Oleksiy Pecherov had 20. Minnesota scored 27 points off Detroit turnovers and was 37-of-46 from the foul line.

Pistons' defense 'terrible' in loss to Timberwolves; Rodney Stuckey scores 25
Charlie Villanueva called it “not acceptable.” Ben Gordon said it was “terrible.” Rodney Stuckey added there are “no excuses.” No matter how it is looked at, the Detroit Pistons’ defense really was that bad. Without centers Ben Wallace and Kwame Brown, the Pistons’ frontcourt was chewed up Thursday night by the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit fell 122-114 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. It was the Pistons’ fourth loss in a row heading into Friday's preseason game against Milwaukee, their last before Wednesday’s season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies. “Guys just aren’t on the same page (defensively) right now,” said Villanueva, who started at forward for the first time this preseason. “Not to discredit anything from Minnesota, but we should have beat this team. “Seemed every time we made a run, they picked it up even more. We gotta pick up the defense.”Minnesota (2-5), which halted a five-game losing streak, picked apart Detroit’s depleted frontcourt to turn in by far its best offensive performance of the preseason.

Timberwolves forward Ryan Gomes (19 points) and centers Oleksiy Pecherov (20 points and 14 rebounds) each set or matched preseason highs against Detroit’s porous interior, which played without Brown because of a hand injury and Wallace because of a sore knee. The Pistons (3-4) were not ducking from their play on defense. “That’s just no excuse,” Stuckey said of playing without Brown and Wallace. “We shouldn’t have just given this team 122 points, first of all. “Offensively, we got it. It’s just all about how badly we want to do it on defense ... 122 points is too many for a team like Minnesota -- any team in the NBA.” Detroit coach John Kuester said before the game he expected Brown to play, but he did not. The team still is waiting on X-rays taken of his injured left hand. Center Chris Wilcox got his first start of the preseason in Brown's place. Villanueva had a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while starting for Wallace. Detroit started the game on a 12-2 run and appeared to overwhelm Minnesota, which played without center Al Jefferson (flu-like symptoms) and forward Kevin Love (broken hand) -- its two best players. But the Timberwolves responded, scoring 14 of the game’s next 18 points to pull even at 16.

Detroit led by three points at halftime and quickly expanded the margin to nine as Minnesota missed six of its first seven shots in the third quarter.“It’s a game of spurts, and our energy level at the beginning of the game and at the beginning of the third, we did a nice job,” Kuester said. “But sustaining that for 48 minutes, we didn’t give the energy we had early on.” Minnesota proceeded to put together a 26-8 run the rest of the quarter to put away the Pistons, who did not trail until that decisive run. The Timberwolves, who averaged only 97.5 points per game entering play Thursday -- 19th best in the NBA -- had six players score in double digits. Guard Corey Brewer netted a team-high 21 points. “(The defense) is very concerning,” Kuester said. “I told (the media) all along we had to defend to win, and we’re not doing that right now. “I’ve got to get more energy and effort, and more consistent energy and effort, from this group, and try to sustain it.” A bright spot for Detroit was the play of Stuckey, who had a team-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, dished out five assists and committed only two turnovers. More importantly, he appears to be emerging as a consistent leader at point guard.“Stuckey ran the team they way I want the team to be run,” Kuester said. “He got people involved in the game, and I thought he did an outstanding a job of taking care of the ball.“Really, he did an outstanding job, and that was one of the things we looked for going into this game, is the leadership at that position, and he did do a good job."

Bill Laimbeer returns to The Palace as assistant coach with Timberwolves
It was a sight few would have ever imagined. Bill Laimbeer, the baddest of Detroit’s Bad Boys, on the same bench with former Laker Kurt Rambis who is the coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. “A Laker and a Piston on the same bench; that’s kind of different,” said Laimbeer, who is now a Timberwolves assistant. “He’s a good guy. He’s demanding. He’s a Laker, so I give him a little bit of credit.”

Laimbeer, who guided the now-defunct Detroit Shock to three WNBA titles as the head coach and general manager, returned to the Palace of Auburn Hills for the first time since leaving the franchise in May. At the time, Laimbeer said he wanted to step away in part to improve his chances of eventually becoming an NBA head coach. He moved one step closer to making that happen when Rambis added him to his coaching staff. “It’s a lot of work; there’s no question about it,” Laimbeer said of being an NBA assistant coach. “It’s been very enlightening. I’ve learned a lot.”

His return comes just days after it was announced the Shock are being relocated to Tulsa. “It’s unfortunate,” Laimbeer said. “I feel bad for everybody involved. A lot of people put a lot of hard work into the Shock over the years. I understand the times, especially in the Michigan market. It’s very difficult. It’s hard to get ticket sales up to make a profit.” Laimbeer acknowledges that there are significant differences between coaching women versus coaching men. “It still comes down to the same thing,” he said. “You have to play hard and play together.”

Deficient D
With presumptive starters Ben Wallace and Kwame Brown sitting one out Thursday with minor injuries, the four other big men vying for a spot in the frontcourt pecking order got ample opportunities to stake their claim with John Kuester. They all had their moments offensively, but the way the short-handed Timberwolves put up points at the other end probably solidified the case for starting Brown and Wallace, their two most stout defenders. Minnesota was without its two top players, Al Jefferson and Kevin Love, yet the three players who took their minutes – Ryan Gomes, Oleksiy Pecherov and Ryan Hollins – shot 13 of 16 in the first half and combined for 53 points as the Timberwolves shot 53 percent and rolled to a 122-114 win that drops the Pistons to 3-4 with their fourth straight preseason loss. It wasn’t the defensive showing Kuester had hoped he’d get after the Pistons sprung leaks in their past three games following an impressive start to the preseason, when they held their first three opponents to under 40 percent. “It’s very concerning,” Kuester said. “I have told you people all along that we’ve got to defend to win and we’re not doing that right now. We’ve done it in spurts, but we’ve got to be a consistent defensive team that’s got to be relentless.” “That’s just not acceptable,” said Charlie Villanueva, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. “You just have to pick it up on defense. It’s just guys not being on the same page at the same time. They hit some good shots, but still – not to discredit anything from Minnesota – we should have beaten this team.” It took Villanueva all of three minutes to flash a full array of offensive skills that convinced Joe Dumars to make him the frontcourt priority with his free-agent bounty. In those three minutes, Villanueva hit a long jump shot, threaded a bounce pass to Rip Hamilton for a layup, and put the ball on the floor, taking it from the wing to the basket, to draw a foul, making both free throws

His role is secure, needed for his offense as surely as Wallace and Brown have a leg up because of their defense. It’s the three others – Jason Maxiell, Chris Wilcox and Jonas Jerebko – who appear to be jockeying for roles behind Brown, Wallace and Villanueva. “The biggest thing is them defending the way I want us to defend and, at times, they’re doing it,” Kuester said. “But we’ve got to be consistent and we’re not consistent right now. In evaluating Maxiell and Jonas and Chris Wilcox, they all bring something special to the table, but it’s got to be a collective thing and we’re trying to get more out of them.” Tough to say if any of them did something to separate himself in Thursday’s loss. Wilcox had 10 points, seven boards and a blocked shot in 24 minutes, drawing the start when Brown told trainer Arnie Kander before the game that his left hand, injured early in camp, could use a night without jostling. (Wallace banged his knee in practice earlier in the week.) He posted up and drew a foul early, making both foul shots, had an impressive put-back jam and dunked twice off nice set-ups. Maxiell finished with 10 points and four boards in 21 minutes, scoring eight of his points in 15 first-half minutes. He started strong offensively, scooping up an offensive rebound and finding Rodney Stuckey (25 points, five assists, four rebounds) for a layup, drawing a foul inside and sinking both foul shots, stepping out to drain a 17-footer with the shot clock about to expire and scoring over Damien Wilkins on a mismatch inside.

Jerebko had a burst of impressive moments early – a sweeping hook shot across the lane, a layup in transition when he beat Minnesota’s big men back, and a pretty winding drive finished with a flipped scoop – but finished with only one rebound and six fouls to go with his six points in 18 minutes. The Pistons started well, leading 10-2, but were up just 64-61 at halftime. After again getting the jump on Minnesota to lead by nine early in the third quarter, the Timberwolves went on a 22-4 run to go up by nine and never lost the lead from that point on, eventually pushing it to 15 in the fourth quarter. “Damn – 122 points is too many for a team like Minnesota, any team in the NBA,” Stuckey said. “We’ve just got to come out from the get-go if we’re going to be aggressive on defense so the referees know what style of defense we’re going to play.” Stuckey also fouled out in 32 minutes as the Pistons were whistled for 36 fouls to 22 for Minnesota, which outshot the Pistons 46-31 from the foul line. “We keep talking about competing hard in practice and playing defense without fouling,” Kuester said. “They shot 14 foul shots in the first half and end up with 46. I’m not saying anything about the officiating, it’s just a matter of us defending without fouling, and not silly fouls. They got in the bonus in the first two minutes of the fourth period. It was not what we wanted to see.” What he’ll want to see Friday night in the preseason finale at Milwaukee is the defense the Pistons played in those first three preseason games.

Tayshaun Prince returned to action for the first time since cutting and spraining his right big toe nine days earlier in the Grand Rapids loss to Washington and played 23 minutes, scoring five points. Kuester said his foot bothered him and they’ll re-evaluate him Friday morning in Milwaukee, but it’s likely that he’ll skip the game.
