Opener closed to A.I.
For the first time in his career, Allen Iverson vows to take the advice of others instead of listening to his body.
That means the 10-time all-star could miss Memphis' season opener Wednesday against the Pistons, his former team, as he recovers from a partly torn left hamstring.
While pain-free after a workout before sitting out the Grizzlies' exhibition finale Friday against Charlotte, Iverson indicated there is a good chance the Grizzlies' medical staff won't clear him for the opener. "They're saying it's a possibility, but it's also a long shot," Iverson said of playing against Detroit.

Knicks keep Gallinari, Chandler
Knicks exercised their options on forwards Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler for the 2010-11 season, keeping two of the team's key building blocks under contract for what management hopes will be a turnaround season.
The moves ensure that Gallinari, the sophomore sharpshooter, and Chandler, an athletic scorer entering his third pro season, will be on board to join forces with a possible superstar signing -- such as LeBron James -- from next summer's loaded free-agent class.
Gallinari, 21, the team's top pick in the 2008 draft, averaged 6.1 points in 28 games during an injury-plagued rookie campaign. Chandler enjoyed a breakout season a year ago, averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds while playing in all 82 games. Chandler is expected to begin the season, which the Knicks tip off on Wednesday night in Miami, as the starting shooting guard, and Gallinari will come off the bench after a preseason in which he struggled at times with his shooting stroke.

Ian's eye has it: It was a painful night for the Spurs' backup big men. In the locker room afterward, Ian Mahinmi took four stitches to close a gash over his right eye.
The cut opened when one of Indiana's guards — Mahinmi thinks it was either Jones or Earl Watson — delivered an elbow during a rebounding struggle.

NBA and National Basketball Referees Association enter new two-year agreement
The NBA and the National Basketball Referees Association announced today that they have entered into a new two-year labor agreement. The agreement, which will cover the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, ends the lockout of referees that commenced on September 18. “We are pleased to reach this agreement,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said. “The negotiations extended further than either side had hoped, but when our regular season tips off on Tuesday we’ll have the best referees in the world officiating our games. We appreciate the job done by our replacement officials during the preseason.”
Per league policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed. InsideHoops.com will edit this page with more info over the weekend.
The NBA referees will begin a three-day training camp this weekend in order to prepare for the start of the regular season on Tuesday.

Ex-Temple star Christmas free on bail
Former Temple basketball star Dionte Christmas was released from police custody on bail early yesterday following his arrest Thursday on felony firearm charges.
Christmas, who was cut earlier in the week by the 76ers, was driving on the 1400 block of Nedro Avenue in the city's Ogontz section about 7:30 p.m. when Highway Patrol officers pulled him over for allegedly driving erratically, Police Department spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said.
Christmas, who was charged with two counts of firearms violations, was arraigned about 4:30 a.m. and his bail was set at $10,000, officials said. He was released shortly after that.

Kings hire Bobby Jackson
Former Sacramento Kings guard Bobby Jackson today announced his retirement from the NBA as a player to pursue a career with the Kings off the court. Jackson will serve as the first-ever Kings Ambassador, as well as assisting President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie in Sacramento’s scouting department. “It’s a tough day for me because I’m retiring from professionally playing the game I love,” said Jackson. “But it’s also a happy day because I’m retiring on my own terms and I get to work in a city and for an organization and franchise that I’ve grown fond of. I’m eager to help get the community involved in supporting the Kings as well as assist the team in putting a good product on the court.”
As the team Ambassador, Jackson will represent the Kings throughout the Sacramento region, engaging with fans, promoting the team and making frequent appearances in the community to support the organization’s initiatives. Jackson played six of his 12 NBA seasons with the Kings, averaging 10.6 points (44.0 FG%, 35.6 3pt%, 81.0 FT%), 3.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in 365 games with Sacramento. Drafted by the Seattle Sonics with the 23rd overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft and then traded to Denver on the night of the Draft, Jackson played for six teams in his NBA career: Denver, (1997-98), Minnesota (1998-99 - 1999-00), Sacramento (2000-01 - 2004-05, 2008-09), Memphis (2005-06), New Orleans (2006-07 -2007-08), and Houston (2007-08). Jackson ranks fifth in three-pointers made (381) and sixth in attempted (1,070) in Kings franchise history. He also ranks 10th in steals (356) in the Sacramento era. “Bobby has been one of our most beloved players with the Kings,” Petrie said. “And it’s very gratifying to see him retire as a King along with the fact that he’s going to go forward and join the organization is really exciting for all of us. I’m really looking forward to working with him in a different type of environment. I know he’ll bring the same attributes as he did on the court.”
Jackson averaged 9.7 points (41.7 FG%, 35.4 3pt%, 79.3 FT%), 3.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in 755 career games. In eight of his 12 seasons, Jackson played in the NBA Playoffs and averaged 9.2 points (40.5 FG%, 27.0 3pt%, 80.7 FT%), 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in 58 contests. His best season came in 2002-03 when he earned the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award after averaging a career-best 15.2 points (46.4 FG%, 37.9 3pt%, 84.6 FT%), 3.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game in 59 games. He became just the second point guard in league history to win the award, joining Orlando’s Darrell Armstrong (1999). Jackson tallied a career-best 31 points versus the Clippers on Nov. 29, 2002. Jackson remains one of the most beloved players in Sacramento-era history for his efforts both on and off the court. He established the Bobby Jackson Foundation in February 2004, a community-based organization created in honor of his mother, Sarah, who passed away in January 2002 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Additionally, he serves as the local spokesman for the Sacramento affiliate Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of his mother.

Done Deal: The agreement between the NBA and its officials has been finalized and completed just in time for the start of the regular season. The month long lockout ended officially late Friday night and Commissioner David Stern issued the following statement: "We are pleased to reach this agreement," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "The negotiations extended further than either side had hoped, but when our regular season tips off on Tuesday we'll have the best referees in the world officiating our games." Per league policy terms of the deal were not announced.
This is a classic example of not appreciating what you have until its gone or locked out for nearly a month in this case. The replacement referees were not the worst group of officials ever, in fact there were actually a lot of good officials who will remember this as the time they put their foot in the door. However, the group of 57 refs that were locked out have definitely been missed and it was evident after a preseason with a lot of ups and downs that a deal had to be done. The only detail available about the new agreement is that it's a two-year deal. The NBA officials got their biggest bargaining chip back in early October when the 6,300 fans in Hidalgo, Texas had to sit through a ridiculous 102 free throws and 75 foul calls. It was then that the uproar began, but overall the replacement refs served their purpose this preseason. This doesn't mean that the current group of NBA officials is now going to be immune to criticism. They're still going to be the subject of a lot of ridicule, but in the back of everyone's mind there will always be the thought of what could have been had a deal not gotten done.
The players didn't exactly give the replacement refs a going away party on the final night of the preseason. In the Lakers Nuggets matchup on national television Lamar Odom and Chris Anderson were pushing back and forth all game, while Dirk Nowitzki argued a 4th quarter call so vehemently that he was ejected. It's safe to say the players are glad this is over with too and that things will be back to normal once the games start to count on Tuesday. It's going to be a quick turnaround for the referees and some rust should be expected since the preseason was like training camp for them. They'll hold a three-day training camp this weekend to make up as much as they can for lost time.

Blair 'Fine' After Bruising Tailbone
Spurs rookie forward DeJuan Blair left tonight's preseason loss to Indiana with a bruised tailbone, but is otherwise fine.
Blair fell hard at some point midway through the fourth quarter. He isn't sure what happened, but he believed Dahntay Jones fell and rolled underneath him during a rebounding scrum
"I'm going to be fine," Blair said.

Refs Ratify Deal; Will Return Tuesday
The regular referees made the call. They’re coming back to work. The referees union and the NBA agreed on a two-year contract Friday, ending a lockout of more than a month and saving the league from using replacements when the regular season starts. The officials voted to ratify the deal that was reached earlier this week. No details of the vote were provided, nor were terms of the agreement. “We are pleased to reach this agreement,” NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement. “The negotiations extended further than either side had hoped, but when our regular season tips off on Tuesday we’ll have the best referees in the world officiating our games.”
The 57 referees were set to begin a three-day training camp Saturday and be ready when the regular season starts Tuesday night. The league used replacement officials during exhibition play.
The referees’ contracts have usually been for five years, but the NBA consented to a two-year deal at the request of the union, which hoped it could renegotiate sooner with the economy hopefully in better shape. The sides agreed on a salary structure that would give the refs a slight raise in the second year, but they remained apart on proposed changes to the referees’ pension and severance packages, as well as a plan to develop younger officials by having them work in NBA games.

Rockets Cut Brent Barry
The Houston Rockets have waived guard Brent Barry, a move that trims their roster to the required 15 players.
The 6-foot-7 Barry signed as a free agent with the Rockets before last season and averaged 3.7 points and 1.4 assists in 56 games.

T-Wolves, Antonio Daniels Part Ways
With his agent unable to find a suitable trade for his client, the Wolves today reached a modest contract buyout with and requested waivers on veteran guard Antonio Daniels, who told David Kahn the week before training camp that he preferred to play elsewhere.
That elsewhere could be a contender like Cleveland.
Since Daniels was acquired primarily in a salary-cap bookkeeping deal that shed Darius Songaila’s contract, Kahn agreed to let his agent find another deal. Daniels stayed home when the team reported to training camp in Mankato nearly a month ago.

Gasol May Miss Season Opener
Pau Gasol's strained right hamstring hasn't improved and it has left him unsure whether he'll be ready to play when the Lakers open the season Tuesday night.
Gasol missed the last six exhibition games, the hamstring not getting any better after he tried to practice Wednesday. "Obviously, there is a real injury with my hamstring," Gasol said. "We tried to practice a couple of days ago and it got a little worse, it got a little irritated, aggravated. So we just stepped backward. Right now we just try to let it heal so I can go back out there."
As for playing Tuesday night, Gasol wasn't sure."It's not out of the question," Gasol said. "We've just got to see how it feels on a daily basis."
