Jazz Injuries Piling Up; Nine Players OK
Then there were nine. With word coming Friday morning that shooting guard Kyle Korver will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee that will keep him out of their 2009-10 NBA regular-season opener Wednesday at Denver and for a stretch of time beyond, the Jazz were down to that many healthy players for their preseason finale — a 95-85 win at Sacramento on Friday night. The loss of Korver — he'll have surgery Tuesday in New York to remove a patellar tendon-related bone spur that's kept him out of all but one of Utah's eight exhibition games — was yet another blow to an already decimated Jazz perimeter.

Veteran small forward Matt Harpring is pondering retirement due to chronic knee and ankle injuries, and incumbent starting small forward C.J. Miles is recovering from recent surgery to repair a ruptured shooting-hand thumb ligament. Starting shooting guard Ronnie Brewer stayed home from this trip with back spasms, and combo guard Ronnie Price traveled here — but wound up missing a fourth straight preseason game because of a strained left hamstring. "These things happen during the season," said coach Jerry Sloan, who wasn't at all happy with the Jazz's defense Friday. "You've got to play, and try to get ready to do what you can to win a ballgame. You know, we'd like to spend four, five weeks concerned about it — but our job is still the same."We'll still run the same plays. ... We're not gonna all of a sudden change our offense."

Even if no more than 11 healthy players (one fewer than permitted) are available for the opener, and that will be the case even if both Brewer and Price recover. "We can't do anything about that," Sloan said. "We just take what we've got, and go on down the road."

OKC Exercises Options on Durant, Others
The Oklahoma City Thunder has exercised the fourth-year options on forwards Kevin Durant and Jeff Green and the third-year options on guard Russell Westbrook and forward D.J. White.

By exercising the options, the Thunder can keep all four players through at least the 2010-11 NBA season. Oklahoma City had until Oct. 31 to exercise the options, or each player would have become unrestricted free agents next summer.

The Thunder holds fourth-year options on Westbrook and White, but Durant and Green are now eligible to sign contract extensions next summer. The team has until Oct. 31, 2010, to sign Durant and Green to extensions, or both players will go into the summer of 2011 as restricted free agents.

Cain in New Zealand:
After Ray Allen and RIP Hamilton who are the next best players at using screens to get open? The two Gordon's or Barbosa?

Susan Bible:
That's difficult to rate from best going down. True, Allen and Rip are the masters, but I guess if pressed, I'd say Ben Gordon. The other Gordon and Barbosa perfect the art as well.

The Pistons over The Bucks
The Pistons win a tight one last night in Milwaukee 95-93 (Box Score). If you take a look at the box score Detroit’s rotation was probably close to what we are going to see on Wednesday when the season begins. Austin Daye started again for the injured Tayshaun Prince with Ben Wallace at center and Charlie Villanueva as the PF.

Wednesday can’t come soon enough, but I’m a little more excited to see just how this new team gets the crowd going at the Palace on Friday night. What kind of reception will Ben Wallace get, how will Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva respond and what does coach Kuester have in store for us.

A season of questions and if the defense doesn’t pick up we know what will be on top of that list.

Stuckey takes over as Pistons close out preseason with a win
A day after yielding an embarrasing amount of points to Minnesota, the Pistons came out Friday night and took care of business in a wire-to-wire win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Fourth quarter heroics from Rodney Stuckey were on full display, as the budding point guard scored Detroit's final nine points. Ben Gordon led the team with 19 points, while Will Bynum and Rip Hamilton chipped in 13 and 12 respectively.

Last night's game marked the first time in eight preseason contests where the Pistons picked up a win and didn't hit at least 100 points on the scoreboard. A big reason for this was the return of defensive specialist Ben Wallace, who sat out last game with a bad knee. Wallace did everything in his power to remind fans just how dominant he can be on the defensive side of the ball, as the former All-Star finished with 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. After the game, head coach John Kuester was more than impressed with his big man: "I think we set the tone defensively, and that all started with the play of Ben Wallace," Kuester said. "He was a bear defensively."

With the way things are looking, this Big Ben statistical explosion is a huge plus heading into the season opener on Wednesday. Can Wallace do it every single night? Heck no. But if he can go out there and haul in double digit rebounds with a couple of blocks every third game then he will have earned his contract by mid-December, and that would be a miraculous sight. The big men that Detroit are rolling with this season just aren't very consistent on the glass, so games like this one from Wallace will be absolutely crucial for the big picture. If nothing else, it appears that the Pistons just found their starting center, and that's enough of a reason right there to be optimistic.

Mea Culpa to Mr. Ben Wallace
Yes, I owe an apology to Mr. Big Ben Wallace, the gong inducing, rebound row t-shirt dispensing, big man that the Pistons re-signed this offseason that I so quickly wrote off as deteriorated, over-the-hill, and nonfunctional. After being able to watch the man play tonight for the first time this preseason, I noticed a Big Ben that was eerily familiar to the Big Ben I grew to love in a non-creepy way for the six years he donned the red, white, and Pistons blue. The same Ben Wallace that was Defensive Player of the Year for four of those seasons.

To my pleasant surprise, he looked healthy, as active as ever, and was the biggest difference maker on the now youthful Pistons team tonight. In the first quarter, his stats were as the picture above indicate. He finished the game with another block and 9 more rebounds (14 rebounds for those who have trouble with math). What was worth more to me than the stat line though was the fact that he forced other turnovers, took a charge, and pressured the Bucks into taking plenty of bad shots. He was the real deal, he was the Big Ben of old, not the old, graying Big Ben.

As if I needed any more convincing that I was in the wrong with my original notions when the Pistons re-signed him, he went ahead and made half his free throws and even airmailed one for good measure. That's right Pistons fans, Big Ben is back, and I'm sorry for being such a negative nincompoop about it.

Best and Worst of the Boxscores (10-23)
* Most certainly the 14 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks from the not so over-the-hill looking Ben Wallace. I’m pleasantly surprised by Ben’s liveliness.
* Big minutes (37:27) for Lindsey Hunter (no Rose, Pargo, Hinrich) but mixed production (0-6 fgs, 0 points, 5 assists, +11).
* Off game for Dejuan Blair- 9 points (4-7), 6 boards, 3 steals in 15 minutes.
* Roy Hibbert in 18 minutes scored 16, had 3 blocks and managed to foul out. Got his money’s worth I’ll say.
* Spencer Hawes is a good shooter for a big. Not tonight though (0-6 fgs, 1-6 fts).
* Baby steps: Only 1 foul for Amir Johnson in 12 minutes
* The Nets aren’t going to be as bad as you think, especially if rookie Terrance Williams can play well (23 points, 5 boards, 8 assists 4 steals)
* And FINALLY, poor Jeff Teague, channeling his inner Flip Murray by chucking and chucking his way to 0-15 from the floor. It’s not a misprint either.
* Playoff seeding predictions to come soon.

Quotes from last night’s game
Scott Skiles on the Bucks backcourt vs. Pistons: “Our point guards had a hard time even getting the ball up the floor and getting into position to run our offense,” Skiles said. “On the other end, they shot 69% in the fourth quarter. “Gordon, Stuckey and Bynum took us wherever they wanted to, and we didn’t have much response to it.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]

Ben Gordon on Rodney Stuckey: “He’s just a bulldog, plain and simple,” Gordon said. “Rodney’s probably one of the strongest point guards in the NBA, if not the strongest.” [Mlive]

Check out this vid of one of Big Ben’s four steals. This one resulted in a C-Vill throwdown.
