Spurs Notebook: Williams cut as team reaches 15-man limit
That made Sunday a rotten day for Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who gave the bad news to guard Marcus Williams, the team's second-round draft pick in 2007 who had played most of the previous two seasons for the Austin Toros, the NBA Development League team the Spurs own.

Williams and Malik Hairston — the guard-forward from Oregon whom the Spurs acquired in a swap of second-round picks with the Phoenix Suns on draft night in 2008 — waged a battle throughout training camp for a potential 15th spot on the roster.

Popovich won't be surprised if Williams is signed by another NBA club before season's end, though he acknowledged that fewer teams are keeping a full complement because of the soft economy. “Whoever we cut should be on an NBA team,” he said, “and it's a tough year to find a job. There's going to be an injury, and if guys don't get signed now, they may be signed at some point. But there are going to be fewer payers with jobs, or so I'm told.”

Al’s Achilles still an issue with opener three days away
Al Jefferson, feeling better after last week’s flu knocked him down, participated in some of today’s practice at Target Center, but he remains bothered by that sore Achilles tendon.

He rode the exercise bike for the final portion of practice and did not scrimmage with his teammates. “I have no idea,” Kurt Rambis said when asked if Jefferson will play in Wednesday’s season opener.”His illness is a non issue. His Achilles is what we’re addressing now and we’re helping him work through that. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow. That’s how we’ll keep going. We’ll keep evaluating him the following day, keep increasing his activity and see how he handles it.”

Kevin Love, back from his hand surgery in New York City last week, did. He had that left hand protected in a split that he says he has to wear only for practice, where he watched and rode the exercise bike and ran a little today. “Originally, they were saying six to eight weeks, but hopefully I can get back sooner than that,” Love said. “They didn’t make any promises.” He said he will have an x-ray taken again in 3 1/2 to 4 weeks and have that sent to the New York City doctor to see if he gets the OK to return.

New Orleans Hornets' Emeka Okafor eager to toe the line
Taking the time to clarify what he thought was a somewhat misleading report last week on his extended absence, New Orleans Hornets center Emeka Okafor on Sunday said he is not ruling out the chance he could play in the team's regular-season opener Wednesday night at San Antonio.

Okafor participated in all of the team's rigorous practice Sunday at the Alario Center except for the five-on-five, full-contact scrimmages, and the center said the sprained second toe on his right foot responded favorably.

Okafor said when he practiced for the first time Oct. 12 after missing the first three weeks of training camp -- planning to make his preseason debut Oct. 17 against Indiana -- he experienced soreness during and after the workout, which slowed his progress.

Gasol, Bynum updates
Here is a sneak-peak at the Lakers notebook that will appear in Monday's paper: Andrew Bynum said he would be ready to play in the Lakers' regular-season opener Tuesday against the Clippers. His strained right rotator cuff was no longer troubling him this afternoon. Neither was a sore left Achilles or a tight left hamstring.

Pau Gasol's status for opening night was less certain, although he made it seem as if Friday's game against the Dallas Mavericks or next Sunday's contest against the Atlanta Hawks might be more realistic. His strained right hamstring was no better.

Gasol couldn't say for certain whether he would suit up against the Clippers. "I didn't practice today and it doesn't look like I'm going to practice tomorrow," he said. "In the long run, in the big picture, I try to tell myself that the most important thing is that I get myself healthy at this point in the year, so I can continue to be healthy. "I don't want to re-injure myself or put myself in a risky situation. Then I won't be helping my team in the long run. That's what I'm trying to keep in mind."

Clippers update: Blake Griffin injured
The monster dunk Blake Griffin threw down late in the third quarter against the Hornets on Friday night had unwelcome repercussions for the rookie -- and, by extension, the Clippers. He hurt his left knee on the play and his status for the season opener against the Lakers on Tuesday is in question, considered day to day.

Griffin did not practice today, nor did point guard Baron Davis (bruised right foot). Davis is expected to play against the Lakers. Marcus Camby (sprained ankle) did practice and could possibly get some minutes in the opener.

What is ominous for the Clippers is that this was the same knee Griffin hurt several days before training camp. He winced after coming down on the dunk, which came with just under four minutes left in the quarter, and immediately appeared to be in pain but kept on playing. Griffin had treatment on the knee after practice and will be examined by the team doctor Monday."There is some swelling in there, so we'll see what happens," Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy said.

Scola returns to practice
Rockets forward Luis Scola returned to practice Sunday, having little difficulty in the most extensive test of his rehabilitation from a sprained right ankle. “I think he'll be ready (for Tuesday's season opener),” coach Rick Adelman said. “He seemed to move all right. We'll see how he feels tomorrow, but I didn't see any problems he had. He moved around pretty well. “It really helps us. He is one of the key guys we had last year. Getting him on the floor makes us deeper there. He can post up. He can make shots. And having his energy is crucial.”

Scola sprained the ankle Oct. 12 and played Oct. 16 in Indianapolis. He struggled, but said he felt stronger Sunday than that night. “It went good,” Scola said. “I was practicing the whole practice. It felt good. We're going to see how it reacts this evening and tomorrow morning. But it's going better. I feel pretty optimistic (about playing Tuesday), but I still have to see how it reacts to practice.”

Fernandez back to work, could play in opener
The initial sign was positive: Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez was in uniform and on the court Sunday, once again practicing with team.

The follow-up sign was even more positive.

What was most important was that Fernandez — who missed the Blazers’ final four preseason contests due to back spasms, and averaged team lows in points (2.7) and shooting percentage (22.2) during the eight-game warmup stretch — was back in action
