Michael Moore in flint,Michigan:
are you and the other houston rocket fans who i might add are a majority fat ready to waste your money on this team? its obvious your warm up should say pistons on it as Tayshaun and Ben Gordan will be a great combo!!!

Bill Ingram:
Michael! Love you work! I would venture to say the majority of NBA fans are fat . . .as the majority of Americans are. It's an epidemic, as you well know. Fortunately, I don't have to buy tickets to games, though I will definitely score one of those new Rockets alternative jerseys that look more like the championship jerseys. I do think Ben and Charlie V will be good for Detroit, but they don't have nearly enough front court scoring or defense. If they go with Ben, he can't score. If they go with CV, he won't defend. They'll make the playoffs, but they'll be out in the first round - barring a mid-season move.

Jo Jo in Houston, TX:
What do you think of a Boozer/Brewer for Rip/Kwame trade? or a Prince/Kwame for Camby/Thornton?

Bill Ingram:
Any trade that involves Kwame Brown immediately has issues in my book. There's no way the Jazz give up Boozer for Kwame. Same with the Clips and Thornton. Kwame's a nice guy, but he wouldn't even start in Houston, where they have no center.

Eric P in Naptown:
Alex, Who is your : contender that you think might falter, surprise team in east and west?

Alex Kennedy:
Not to rag on Cleveland more but they may falter if Delonte West's off-court issues become a distraction or if Shaquille disappoints. The expectations in Cleveland are so high that anything short of amazing is going to be considered struggling. My surprise teams at this very moment are the Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trailblazers in the West and the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons in the East.

Specialist to Advise Bell on Surgery
He (Raja Bell) hasn't made a final decision whether to have surgery to repair that torn ligament, and he won't until he hears back from a hand specialist in Chicago. Surgery could cost him four months of inactivity.

But there was Bell, wrist heavily wrapped, working out with a weighted ball, shooting 3-pointers and going through layup drills.

Sure looked like a guy predisposed to toughing it out by skipping that surgery. Is this about obligation? "There is an obligation," said Bell, as savvy a guy as you'll meet in the NBA. "But there are two obligations: one to my family and myself and my career and (another) obligation to the team that I'm a part of. Being a competitor and a businessman, I'm kind of split down the middle. "Hopefully this (specialist) comes back, tells me I'm fine to play, and then I don't have to make a decision.''

Stuckey Showing Improved PG Skills?
For the Pistons to have a good season, it'll be important for Rodney Stuckey to be a good point guard.

The Pistons need to see continued development from their third-year player, a player who has shown great promise at times, but has frustrated the Pistons and their fans by not showing it consistently enough. The Pistons want to see consistent, effective results. Which is why Stuckey's all-around play the final two exhibition games was so pleasing for coach John Kuester.

The Pistons want to see consistent, effective results. Which is why Stuckey's all-around play the final two exhibition games was so pleasing for coach John Kuester. "It was neat to watch him develop as a point guard the last two games," Kuester said. "He ran the team, he put people in positions, and his offense just flowed in regard to not looking for his offense -- it just happened. "That was the thing that was impressive." "Watching him on tape defensively, truthfully, when he wants to clamp down, he's as good defensively as there is in the league," Kuester said. "He has a chance to be special defensively. I'll tell you right now, he did a number of things defensively in regards to guarding the best two-guards, (including) Michael Redd, and he doesn't shy away from any competitive situation."

Achilles Still Problematic for Jefferson
Al Jefferson, feeling better after last week’s flu knocked him down, participated in some of today’s practice at Target Center, but he remains bothered by that sore Achilles tendon.

He rode the exercise bike for the final portion of practice and did not scrimmage with his teammates. “I have no idea,” Kurt Rambis said when asked if Jefferson will play in Wednesday’s season opener.”His illness is a non issue. His Achilles is what we’re addressing now and we’re helping him work through that. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow. That’s how we’ll keep going. We’ll keep evaluating him the following day, keep increasing his activity and see how he handles it.”

Jefferson wasn’t in much of a mood to talk to reporters today, so he didn’t.

Bynum In, Gasol Out in Opener?
Gasol did not practice Sunday, isn't planning on practicing today and probably won't play Tuesday, if the body language and overall uncertainty over his strained right hamstring is to be interpreted correctly. "It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to play on Tuesday," said Gasol, who sat out the Lakers' last six exhibition games because of the injury. "He still doesn't feel comfortable on it," said Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, who was already looking past the opener. "We have three days in between our first game and our second one. If worse comes to worst, we've got a really good replacement for him."

Bynum, on the other hand, practiced Sunday after sitting out two exhibition games because of a strained rotator cuff and sore left hamstring. He said he would "play for sure" Tuesday.

Griffin May Miss Opener with Knee Injury?
It's hard not to give in to the temptation to utter the word curse and think about one man named Danny Manning each time (Blake) Griffin gets injured. Optimism around the team's Playa Vista headquarters took a bit of a hit on Sunday, the air rushing out of a promising 6-2 preseason when Griffin didn't practice and had treatment afterward. He and his aching left knee are considered iffy for the season opener against the Lakers on Tuesday.

Best-case scenario: The swelling that Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy described goes down, and the team doctor examines the knee Monday, clearing Griffin to play Tuesday. And all promptly get to work at erasing the strong memory of a 19-win season. Worst-case scenario: Curse 1, Griffin 0. Meaning he's out for an extended period.

Whether this is Griffin's third injury or his second since being drafted by the Clippers in late June is debatable. This could easily be considered an extension of the second one because he aggravated the knee Friday when he came down after an explosive dunk late in the third quarter against New Orleans in the exhibition finale. Dunleavy said he thought the team wouldn't know until Tuesday whether Griffin would play against the Lakers.

Bulls Pick Up Noah, Rose Options
The Chicago Bulls announced today the team has picked up the options for the 2010-11 season for guard Derrick Rose and forward/center Joakim Noah. By exercising the respective player options, both players will be under contract with the Bulls for the 2010-11 season.

Rose, appeared in 81 games (80 starts) last year en route to being selected the 2008-09 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year. On the season, he averaged 16.8 ppg, a team-high 6.3 apg and 3.9 rpg in 37.0 mpg. The Chicago native shot .475 from the field and .788 from the free throw line. He finished the 2008-09 campaign in the top three in several categories all-time among Bulls rookies, including total points (third with 1,361), scoring average (third) and assists (third with 512). Josh Howard Out "Weeks"?
While there is still some soreness in the wrist, the ankle is preventing Howard from playing. He had minor reconstructive surgery on the ankle, which had bothered him since his senior season at Wake Forest in 2002-03.

The Mavericks are exercising patience with Howard. The priority is getting him completely healthy, not rushing him back into the lineup.

"It could be a while," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It could be weeks. I don't know. I don't know. We'll find a way without him, but we know we're better with him. When he comes back, we'll have to be ready to integrate him very quickly."

BIG BEN'S BIG JOB
In years past when Elden Campbell and Dale Davis were brought to the Pistons by Joe Dumars as veteran backups their roles were clearly defined: sit on the bench, be ready and don't make waves.

Pistons waive Washington
The Pistons waived forward Deron Washington on Monday. Washington averaged 3.3 points and 0.6 rebounds in 6.4 minutes per game during the preseason.

Detroit drafted Washington with the 59th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. The former Virginia Tech star played with Hapoel Holon of the Greek League last season, averaging 14.8 points and 7.0 rebounds. "I personally would have loved to see us keep him," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "There’s no question because he’s got a bright future in basketball. I think he’s very athletic. I saw him in the beginning of summer, continually improve, with some of the hard work our assistant coaches did with him. You never want to see someone go, but it’s part of our business. Another player that was with us is Maceo Baston. Maceo Baston did a great job throughout the entire camp. That’s part of our business, but it’s never a pleasant part."

The move puts the Pistons’ roster at 14. Detroit opens the regular season on Wednesday at Memphis.

Atkins ready for mentor role
Chucky Atkins secured a roster spot Monday, when the Pistons waived rookie guard/forward Deron Washington. The 10-year veteran came to Pistons training camp with high hopes of making the team after being released by Minnesota the week before. “I thought it was an opportunity to be on a team,” Atkins said of coming to Pistons training camp. “I had nothing to lose when I came into this situation being that I just got released probably three days prior to coming to training camp. I thought it was a good situation for me. I talked to coach (John Kuester). I came in with the expectations of making the team, not necessarily worried about anything else. It worked out for me.”

Atkins role will be much different than his last stint with the team (2000-2004), where he started for two seasons before coming off the bench for two years. Atkins minutes will be very limited and there will be plenty of games where he is inactive. Atkins said he just wants to help mentor the younger players and thinks his leadership is why he made the team. “Obviously, you make the team as a long shot, pretty much as the third point guard at the moment, so the only thing I can add is my insight to the game with both Rodney (Stuckey) and Will (Bynum) and be a leader,” Atkins said. “I’ve been around this league for a while, I know what to expect, I know what it takes to win and we got two young guys who I can mentor.”

Atkins did not get much playing time during the preseason, playing a total of 23 minutes in three preseason games, scoring eight points and dishing out three assists. But Atkins did the little things in practice and brought a work ethic that impressed Kuester and Pistons president Joe Dumars enough to keep him around. "You couldn’t see all the things he did from a positive standpoint," Kuester said, referring to Atkins' role in practice. "He has been a great role model for our young point guards. He’s really done an outstanding job of running the team in practice. I think that’s one of the reasons it came down to us keeping him because he’s challenged both of those players everyday in practice. I’m very impressed with not only what he did on the court, but off the court as well."

News from Practice
Chucky Atkins will be the team's third point guard behind Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum. However, for the team's first game, Atkins will be inactive. Coach Kuester talked today about how impressed he was with how Atkins ran the team in practices and pushed the two younger guards. Chucky himself talked about what he adds to the team, saying that he knows he has been brought here in a leadership and experience role and for a veteran presence in the lockeroom full of young players.

Ben Wallace was another major topic for Coach Kuester who said he likes the presence and leadership from Wallace. Big Ben's minutes will fluxuate this season, but Kuester said that Ben is in good shape and comfortable with where he's at. It is clear that the team brought both former Pistons back for mentoring roles with this current team.

A side note, Charlie Villanueva talked about how Twitter has brought him publicity, especially last season when he was with a small market team like the Milwaukee Bucks. Of course, by now, you know the famous story of how Villanueva was tweeting during a halftime of a Bucks game creating a small controversy with people who feel he should have been paying more attention to his team. For what its worth, Villanueva addressed that issue again, saying that he used it as motivation and played a better half of basketball leading his team to a comeback win. He also talked about Detroit being more well-known and a bigger market to showcase his skills. A number of teams were interested in signing him, but according to Charlie, it was the meeting with Joe Dumars that won him over and convinced him that Detroit was the place for him.
