Sheldon Williams did a nice job tonight

Post#1 » by sam_I_am » Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:53 am

I wasn't too thrilled with him in preseason but I thought he played well in last game. Tonight he filled in for Big Baby very well. It just goes to show you how a player's ability gets so inflated playing with great players but still I think Sheldon is going to do a nice job as the 4th big. And I am shocked to be typing that.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

I agree. I don't follow college basketball as much as I used to, but I've always been a Duke fan and I was a big fan of "The Landlords" in college. I didn't think he'd ever make a great NBA player.

I didn't expect much of him here, but he was surprisingly solid tonight. He really needs to work on staying on his feet. He bought into way too many pump fakes tonight. Anytime someone threw a pump fake at him, he went for it. If he cuts that out, he'll be a GREAT 4th big, much better than Mickey Mouse Moore. He won't replace Leon Powe at all, but he'll be solid if he continues to improve.

Defensively i thought he was pretty good, but on the offensive side of the ball he has no hands. There were three to four balls that hit him right on the hands, and he couldnt handle it. There was also one play where he tried to draw a charge on Mo Williams on a simple rotation and he couldnt get it done. Hopefully, he will continue to work and gain more confidence because we are going to need him, at least for the next 5 weeks or so.

I doubt he'll ever be a great 4th big.

Hopefully, however, he'll be a very good 5th big, and an adequate 4th whenever somebody else gets hurt.

Yeah, Sheldon's active, and a decent rebounder/defender, but he can't score a lick and his hands are either too small or simply terrible. He might have Blount hands even. On some nights, we're going to need some of the scoring Baby used to provide. Williams won't be able to do it.

Really all i would like him to do on the offensive side of the ball is set solid screens and hit the glass. Anything else we get out of him is a bonus, Its crazy looking back at how dominate he was at Duke to where he is now. Its not that his career is over, but this could be one of his last shots to make a decent NBA career.

min fga fgm ftm-a +/- off def tot ast pf st to bs ba pts
S. Williams 12:30 0-1 4-4 +7 0 3 3 0 3 0 1 0 1 4

vs. shaq and big z and carrot top and I watched the game he got a block not in the stats but what ever.
point is he didn't look lost on his d assignment and on offense he did his part passing at the top of the key and posted nice screens and he drew 2 fouls.

keep it up, big head

(dude has a super long head like an alien head or is it me?)

He reminds me of that Collins guy - who granted isn't a great player either but can contribute with defense and hustle.

After the last preseason game I knew he can help this team. He was very solid yesterday. He knows how to play, so Doc can put him on the floor knowing he won`t do something stupid. He doesn`t have good hands but otherwise he is a good 4th,5th big...

Not bad at all.

Way ahead of Mikki Moore, that's for sure. He'll most likely never be able to do what Baby does on offense but it's nice to have an active big body that can defend out there. Still, if this was Baby, or better yet Powe ( :x ) we'd beat the Cavs by 20.

I do think he'll keep improving.

With the guys he's playing with on the 2'nd unit, he just needs to keep it simple, work hard defensively, and just take what is given to him on offense without pushing that aspect too hard. Just what Perk does. Get a basket, that's a bonus. I liked what he did, of course there were areas that could improve, but you'd expect that from someone who is probably the 6'th big man in terms of depth getting used to a new team.

Of course it's not all on him, but it's a great credit to the 2'nd unit that the Cavs felt they had to play Lebron the entire 2'nd half.

Sheldon just needs to get lots of repetitions with the team and he'll be fine. He doesn't have the good hands and the natural talent, but he can be a 'good soldier' type out there who will show his value by setting the right pick, being in the right position for a rebound, rotating on D and all those types of fundamentals. Getting a pass in traffic on the way to the hoop? Not really his game.

I kinda like him though, he's the anti-Baby soap opera so far. I can wait for Baby to get back, no hurry. Maybe he'll start to get a better grip on his inflated sense of value on the club once he sees the team gets along just fine without him.

Yeah, Shelden did a decent job defensively, but boy does he have stone hands. :-? Baby would have definitely caught those passes, cause he has strong hands. I think Shelden will be fine though till Baby gets back. Just imagine how good the bench will be when Baby returns. 8-)

You know we give DA a lot of credit or drafting wisely, and we should. But the development aspect of his strategy is propbably equally impressive. Aside from the talent, why does Willims thrive here and languish in Atlanta. He does OK in Cleveland and Doc makes a point of giving him a atta boy at the end of the game. I bet that was the best moment of his NBA life, maybe after signing the first contract.

I heard last night Rondo was worth so much, and he was only going to improve. Why is he only going to improve? Why does Perk keep on improving?

I am really happy with Shelden. Another solid performance.

I am most impressed with his BBIQ. It is nice to see a smart player who knows how to play the game on both ends of the floor...

I'm liking Shelden too. The guy just does what he does, and plays his role well. This may be another of the cases that we have seen so much of around here where and injury has allowed a guy to show his stuff, and he ends upsticking around for a while. Honestly, I feel a hell of a lot better knowing that we have the guy around. He can rebound and defend, and even can knock down a 15 footer. Rondo, Paul and KG will get him the looks that he can convert. I'm not looking for greatness out of a guy like Shelden... just competence.
