Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon power Pistons
Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon gave doubters their first answer as to whether they could coexist. The answer was a resounding yes. Hamilton scored 25 and Gordon 22 as the Pistons defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 96-74, in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night. The victory made coach John Kuester a winner in his NBA head coaching debut. "We have to continually build on this but it's a good start to the season," Kuester said. "One game doesn't make a season but it's the right type of way to win." Wednesday's opener was a good base to build from. After a roller coaster exhibition season the Pistons looked robust offensively and downright stingy on defense, which where the team's chances for success this season largely rest. "We came out aggressive, helped each other at both ends of the floor and fed off each other's energy," said Hamilton, who twisted his right ankle in the fourth quarter. "We wanted to make a statement and we a did good job of that early in the game."

Hamilton said he came down on the ankle on someone's foot and couldn't push off it. Hamilton had X-rays after the game which revealed no break. He'll have the ankle re-examined today in Detroit. The Pistons held the Grizzlies to 36-percent shooting (26-of-72). Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 21 points, while Rudy Gay scored 16 and Zach Randolph (Michigan State) had 14 points. It was the Grizzlies, you might remember, who scored 115 points and shot over 50 percent two weeks ago in an exhibition game against the Pistons. "We did a good job holding them under 38 percent, the team was really focused," Kuester said. "Memphis came out strong at the start of the game but our guys kept taking the punches and were very resilient." The Grizzlies, though an interesting collection of young talent, never got going. Playing without Allen Iverson (hamstring), they struggled to put down shots. The Pistons, on the other hand, had no such problem.

Hamilton had 17 points in the first half (on 7-for-14 shooting) and Gordon 15 points (5-for-7). Each made all three of his 3-point attempts, as the Pistons sprinted to a 53-41 halftime lead.Gordon came off the bench firing, and obviously in a groove. That was apparent early when he sank an off-balance 3-point shot, was fouled, and made the free throw for a four-point play, giving the Pistons an 18-16 lead. "He (Gordon) got things going in the right direction," Kuester said. "Ben's a very special offensive player and he's done a great job of coming into the game and giving us instant offense." Because Gordon and Hamilton are similar offensive threats, catch-and-shoot guys who don't need to handle the ball, Gordon believes there isn't an issue as to whether the players can co-exist. "We don't need the ball in our hands to be effective," Gordon said.

Pistons 96, Grizzlies 74
Thoughts after the Pistons soundly defeated the Grizzlies 96-74. 1) That was a thorough dismantling. Just goes to show you the pre-season doesn't mean much because, well, Memphis soundly defeated the Pistons just a weeks ago in an exhibition. 2) Ben Gordon scores effortlessly He comes off the bench and produces offense. And he makes a good point. He and Rip don't need the ball in their hands to be effective. They are catch and shoot guys. They WILL be able to play together. 3) Memphis draft pick Hasheem Thabeet has a LONG, LONG way to go to be a decent NBA player. 4) And Allen Iverson? The drama, no one will miss. But the quotes, many in the Detroit media will miss big time. Good luck trying to win in here in Memphis, though, AI.

Pistons Cakewalk in Memphis, 96-74
Not a bad way to bring in the new era. Once Detroit grabbed the lead with a 1:11 left in the first quarter, they never relinquished it, as they outscored the Grizzlies in each quarter en route to a 22-point win. This was a 43-point turnaround from when the Pistons lost to the Grizzlies eleven days ago (in the preseason) by 21 points.

As we're going to see more times than not this season, Detroit's guards carried the majority of the offensive load. Richard Hamilton led all Pistons scorers with 25 points (10-19 shooting) and Ben Gordon scored 22 points off the bench (7-12 from the field and 4-7 from three point land). The four guards also combined for 15 assists to just four turnovers. Now, before we get all high and mighty after tonight's win, let's just remember who the Pistons played. Memphis is not exactly a powerhouse and Detroit's glaring flaws were still exposed. Memphis' starting big men outscored Detroit's 51-24 -- although the contrast in guard totals was more than enough to make up for it -- and Detroit was outrebounded 49-39, despite having plenty more opportunities to grab them considering they shot 51% and Memphis shot 36%.

I won't rain on the first game win parade anymore, though. Detroit did what we'd expect them to do against a team of Memphis' caliber -- win and win big. The fresh look Detroit squad is now 1-0, which isn't really that big of a deal, but hey, Cleveland is 0-2.

Some random thoughts/notes on the game after the jump.
Richard Hamilton came down awkwardly late in the fourth quarter and went to the locker room after splitting a pair of free throws. You hate to see that happen to one of the best players on the team at any time, but especially when it happened late in the fourth with a 20+ point lead. Hopefully, it's nothing serious and he can play on Friday against the Thunder.

Another strong performance from Ben Wallace. It doesn't really show in the box score, again, but he was causing all sorts of problems out there for Memphis. He grabbed nine rebounds in 28 minutes.
