Gentry
How happy are you with uncle Alvin's coaching so far?
He's no Dantoni but in my view hes done an effective job of returning us to fast paced play (even faster than before actually), making the bench a force to be reckoned, and really upped our rookies performance by being confident in them (read: Dragic)
I wouldnt mind keeping him around for a bit

I think he's going to be here for many years to come. He fits our system and knows all the players well.

Re: Gentry
I think he's doing much better with the rotations than D'Antoni or Porter did. He knows when his starters aren't cutting it, and isn't afraid to let the bench give an extended spark if they're playing well (such as in last night's game). I was unimpressed with the almost complete lack of transition play last night (only 2 fast break points total), but that's mostly player execution because there weren't defensive stops that lead to fast breaks.

Guys like Frank Johnson and Terry Porter may have been bad coaches but at least they were real coaches. Guys like D'antoni, Don Nelson, Alvin Gentry, etc...arn't real coaches. Why? They let the team coach.
Yeah I'm the first to admit I enjoy watching run-n-gun basketball but that doesn't change the fact that those guys don't really coach their teams...Right now Nash is the coach of the Suns while Gentry has the title.

Re: Gentry
I disagree. Sure Nash may run the offense but who decides the defensive game plans? Who decides when substitutions should be made and who draws plays out of timeouts. Correct me if I am wrong but all of that stuff is Gentry's job. He may not control every offensive set like other coaches do but why should he when you have a brilliant mind like Nash orchastrating the show.
On the other hand I do acknowledge the validity of your statement. Gentry definatly gives the players more free range. However, it is his to give and part of his coaching strategy. I think he will do an amazing job this season. I already like him over Dantoni because he utilizes the bench and helps our younger players develope by trusting in them and giving them playing time. Overall if our team is unsuccessful this year I won't blame it on Gentry but rather the FO for their inability to address our lack of size and rebounding issues. This is because if we indeed are unsuccesful it will be (barring injury) for these reasons.

actually MVF, Nash is more like the GM/Owner of this team. they do what ever he says.
i dont remember if anyone else said this before, or if it was i who conjured up this brilliant idea:
Gentry is a good coach because he is a schemer. he tries many a different defensive/ lineup schemes to try to make the team play better. he also uses his bench a lot better than D'Antoni ever did, and while i am not saying that he is a better coach then D'Antoni (dont want to be bashed), i am saying that he, most if the time, is a SMARTER coach than DA. do you guys think dragic would have improved as much as he has with porter/DA? gentry is a better long term option for coach, and i hope he is here for a long time.

Why is this a bad thing? I'd want Nash to player-coach if it were allowed.

Re: Gentry
Gentry definitely isn't as stubborn as D'antoni or Nelson are... He's more open to trying different things and finding out what works. And he listens to his players when they suggest stuff or when tell him what's working. So, in that sense... yeah, he let's the team "coach." That's kind of what being a player's coach is. They respect him for that, and therefore, they play for him.
No one on the suns last year actually played for Porter. (you could argue that shaq did... but i'd say he played for himself) A "real" coach isn't defined by sticking to his guns at all costs. That's called being stubborn... and is part of the reason why we didn't win a championship with D'antoni (and weren't even contenders with porter/frank johnson). He wouldn't give the bench a chance and he wouldn't spend any time in practice to go through defensive rotations.
D'antoni and Gentry both have drawn up good plays when it comes down to the wire though... unless, of course, nash was telling them what to draw on the board, describing the play himself.
I'll take Gentry over porter or frank johnson any day...

I like Gentry a lot. He's keeping Mike's blueprint, but hes also much more willing to work with a bench. It's kind of awesome.

I also like Gentry a lot. He has the ability to be a much better coach than D'Antoni because of the fact that he is willing and able to use and develope our bench. We may not have as talented starting five but the developement of our bench will go a long way in making up for that. Especialyy with the style we play. We will be able to keep from tiring out during games and have everybody fresh for the playoffs.
