Prove Me Wrong Bynum
OK it's been a minute since I came with a post like this, but lately or for the last couple of seasons a select few of the board family seem to have come to the conclusion that I have a dislike for Andrew Bynum. I know a few others have been critical of him also, but seems like the guillotine comes for me when I mention his name. Many think I'm a hater of him, I'm not. Have I been whipping him? Hell yeah. But it's only because I know he's capable of giving it on both ends.
So now I'm gonna set the record straight and get it all out there........my expectations of what I want from him on a nightly basis. For one he has to start showing the same vigor on the DEFENSIVE END like he does on the offensive end and rebound the ball I mean go for it not some half ass reach. I mean most of you have to be blind or fail to recognize the difference between his metamorphosis on both ends of the floor.
Quick example, when we played Denver at the Honda Center and DJ got the start preseason or not none of you can confidently say we were going to do well with out Pau and Drew. That game just goes to show what a beast in the middle can do to a team like the Nuggets. DJ with his blocks turned them into a perimeter shooting team. Granted Drew and DJ are way different players but I'm of the belief a true big locks in on defense and the offense will come. Now Drew is the antitheses of this, he needs to score first and his defense comes next. OK I'm good with that, but we go back to his zest to really dig in on it.
You think it was a reason P-Jax was riding him before on it? Hell yeah it was........too many times he was late on rotations, not covering the weak side and fouling excessively for no reason. Suddenly I noticed over a slow period, but when Drew was getting his minutes on the floor he started to shy away from doing what a big does. If missing a rotation meant not getting a foul.........oh well he wasn't covering period. Simply put and it went over most of you guys head, but he felt if he wasn't fouling he would be able to stay in the game.
But like the Jedi he is Phil caught this and punished him for it, he'd take Bynum out the game the minute he screwed up. Now I also get the fact that injuries derailed him too, every time he built up steam he got hurt. Danny Darko mentioned something in an earlier post about Drew becoming the franchise one day in the mode we've come to know with the Lakers........the big man dominates and the rest fall in line. I get it, but if Drew is going to assume that role of being the man the only way we continue to win titles is if he fully commits to the D like he does the O. So when he becomes a terror on the boards and defensive end we'll be a title contender for a long long time.
Cause in my time I haven't seen too many title winners where the big man is all O and no D.

you're right he's not a number one guy yet.
if he wants to be a star he's gotta give it his all on defense.

I hear you. I think he can be better on the defensive end also, particularly on help defense if he's ever going to be the main building block for this team in the future like I think he'll be.

DEEP, I can't seem to recall you giving compliments to Drew when he deserved it (I maybe wrong about this), but I never thought you were a hater or that your critisism of Bynum was unjustified, good post.

Well that was the hypothesis of how I was perceived to be a hater in the first place. The compliments will come once I see a change in him.snaquille oatmeal wrote:DEEP, I can't seem to recall you giving compliments to Drew when he deserved it (I maybe wrong about this), but I never thought you were a hater or that your critisism of Bynum was unjustified, good post.

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
well no doubt DEEP, i have to agree, id like to see about 4 more rebounds on AVERAGE per game more than he brings to the table...
a 7 foot monster bringing down 8 boards a game is pretty shameful, when a skank like rajon rondo can grab 11 any given day...also 1.8 blocks a game is horrendous. dude simply needs to step up on the defensive end, because as far as i can remember, on a beastly night shaq would have 38/16/7/4blocks..and thats a fact.

hell yeah I agree with you the guy needs to be our banger our ben wallace/sam perkins/joe pryzabilla. bynum's presence needs to be felt on the defensive end. right now it's just all stats he need his presence to be felt.

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
No offense... But was that all really necessary?
Bynum hasn't PROVEN anything yet other than he has potential... No way does he deserve the love he gets...
He doesn't deserve the hate either...
He's a nice prospect for the future... Nothing more... Every good team has one...
And he's frustrating as hell because he has a hard time staying on the court for the play-offs but seems to think he deserves MORE consideration.
No need to defend yourself for calling him out for that...
Calling someone a 'Hater' is a cop-out... It's a worthless critique... It's not quantifiable and means nothing. Therefore it's impossible to 'prove' and also impossible to defend yourself against... Trying either way is a waste of time.
It's like calling someone a heretic...
I think we SHOULD be calling out any of our players that seem to think they're an integral part of our championship hopes, if they don't deliver... Bynum, Farmar, Ammo, hell.... Fisher, Odom, Gasol...
Doing so doesn't mean you have something personal against any of them. It just makes you a LAKER fan first...

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
last years call from jax was just to "rebound and play defense"
im wondering are we gong to require from him more than that? or will jax sit and wait, and hope that he will "evolve" into that type of player that is an all around type.

Bynum is no Shaq and I'm pretty sure no one ever will be. If you expect him to, you will be severely disappointed....

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
I think hes cautious on the defensive because he does not want to get into foul trouble like in many previous game. Fishers D is letting his man run by him with ease and kobe gambling = AB on the bench. His minutes suffers as odom takes over late in the 4th. Seems like hes more offensive minded now cause playing defense is boring to the avg viewer and scoring is super sexy. His numbers will taper down a bit as soon as pau returns. BUT I love his FT% take notes farmar!

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
as far as comparisons to shaq, please no. in his day, shaq can jump with overpowering consequences. for a 7footer that big he was extremely agile, powerful and a monster dunker with his leaping ability. bynum has length, but he definitely does not have the UPs that shaq "had" . . .

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
Ever since Drew's first break out season before the first injury he became one of my favorite players. On this current Lakers team he is my second favorite Laker after Kobe. Even I criticize what Drew does and I will say that he needs to work on his rebounding and shot blocking. Does that mean I hate him? Because if it does then you are wrong.
There have been numerous times where people I know will say things like Bynum sucks, he is a nobody, and etc, and I will argue for Bynum's side while always getting ganged up against. I do admit to them though that he still needs work but I never agree with them to a level where I say he sucks. There is nothing wrong with saying that one of your favorite players or a player on your team needs to work on a certain aspect of his game. I noticed that when Drew had about 5 or 6 rebounds Deep would say needs more work, his rebounds are low. I would agree with him because I know what Bynum's potential is. Bynum shouldn't be getting 5 or 6 rebounds a game. I don't know if some of you guys take that as hate or what.
After his first night I was very happy with his performance. He just needs to tone down the amount of shots he takes and settle for the easy ones. Some of the crap he throws at the basket is ridiculous.

Re: Prove Me Wrong Bynum
All I know is when he wasn't in the middle, we got our arses kicked by 39 in a deciding game where our make shift front line played like SISSY'S! Yeah I said it! The only reason I don't use the other word is because I don't want to take a vacation if its against the rules! When he was there we got a ring! PERIOD! Just as Doc Rivers stated he's much more of a presence than you realize. Deep you crack me up man, you don't ride any other player like this but it's cool. Ya'll act like Drew owes ya'll something. Do you really think he gives hoot about what you guys think? Especially you guys who can do nothing more than run him into the ground. Can't say anything good about him EVER!
This actualluy disappoints me to see a thread like this. Then soon as he got hurt some of ya'll straight up said there goes our season! In those EXACT words! I laugh at anyone who calls themselves a true fan of the sport that goes along with this ish. This is player bashing at its best! Screw everything else he does for us i'm going to ride him until he becomes the player I want him to be!? Get the "F" outta here with that crap. As far as teams winning a title with out a big man being a hog on defense, check the Bulls, they didn't even have 1. Also 2 other teams that met them, Seattle & Utah didn't either! I rest my case.

You miss the gist of it. What's disappointing about me stating what I wish he would do? All I'm saying is attack the defensive end like he does on the offensive end..............with some passion to do it.Anklebreaker702 wrote: disappoints me to see a thread like this.
