Once Sloan leaves and Jazz "fans" see what its like to have a crap coach they'll all be reminiscing about the good old days of Sloan. I think people forget that if it weren't for the greatest basketball player of all time, the Jazz would have two championships under Sloan. Name five coaches in the league that you think are better than Sloan.

I come up with four, and they are all in the Western Conference, meaning the Jazz are pretty much doomed to be out coached in the playoffs every year. Phil Jackson, Nate McMillan, Greg Popovich, Rick Adelman.

Rick Adelman? I don't see how he could be considered better than Sloan. On par maybe but to say he is better would be a stretch. Anyway, here is my point: Most any coach in the league that you can try and say is better than Sloan has next to no chance of ever coming to coach in Utah. So we can either deal with Sloan, who is one of the all time best coaches, or we can risk being like the rest of the small market teams in the NBA. Bucks, Grizzlies, Bobcats, Timberwolves. See a trend here? With the exception of the Spurs and maybe one or two other teams, small market teams are typically pretty pathetic. Since we can't sign big name free agents we have to have a coach who can get the best out of average players. Sloan is undoubtably the best at doing so. Besides, the second Sloan leaves Phil Johnson will take over the reigns and our team will still play the exact same way.

McMillan? Adelman I see as being on par with Sloan. Jackson and Popovich are both better coaches than Sloan, Brown has a case too. I love Sloan but I honestly would not mind him leaving. He's been here long enough to leave behind a lot of positives. Whoever takes over the coaching spot will be able to bring a new outlook to Sloan's system and philosophy but almost nobody would be able to completely undo what Sloan has set up for the past years.

- How many rings would the Jazz have if Shaq/Bryant, Jordan/Pippen, Bryant/Gasol+great shooters, Duncan/Parker/Ginobili would have played for Sloan?

- How many rings would Jackson have with Sotckton/Malone/Hornaceck if he had to play against Jordan/Pippen/Rodman/Harper + a couple zebras?

Jerry Sloan is, without the shadow of a doubt, a top tier basketball coach. Of course he's not flawless, but no coach is flawless. There's just no other coach out there with Coach's ability to get the most with the less... and that's exactly what you want when no supertar's going to wear a little market team uni...

Anyway, there's people out there with really unsupportable ideas on any issue you want to analyze... so why in the hell would not be people thinking Sloan's a crappy coach?

Sloan is a HOF coach so obviously he knows what he is doing. I don't blame Sloan for the disappointments whatsoever, just look at what he has had to deal with. How can you blame the guy? I hope he stays around until this team finally reaches their full potential and give at least 1 more good deep playoff run.

Sloan is the best we're going to get in Utah. When he's ready to retire I say give Phil or Ty a shot (unless a big name is on the market), but until then I'll stick with a known entity, flaws and all

To all you A-holes who can't see a good thing when you have it, enjoy our years of mediocrity when he retires and we have a new guy. For us to get another coach as good as Sloan is very unlikely. Personally, I think he is a top 5 coach in the league easy right now. But keep whining, you'll see soon enough.

Sloan's biggest strength is his biggest weakness. He is conservative to a fault. He doesn't allow dynamics of individual talent come into play. He relies on hardnosed play and teamwork to grind out wins.

He is good if not the best in that regard. He is a prototypical drill seargeant, and brings out the best in certain individuals, but handcuffs others. He follows a template and there is no deviation from it.

To call Sloan a bad coach is wrong, but to put him on a pedestal is wrong also. He is what he is, and this system will give you a solid base, but I think to win a championship, you need to a little bit of dynamic tact and flexibility to exploit strengths and minimize weaknesses.

I find it amusing that any "Jazz fan" is a Sloan hater. If you are old enough to remember the Frank Layden days than 20+ years is plenty of time to lose interest in a team. If you have remained or become a Jazz fan during the Sloan era, than it because of Sloan... plain and simple. He deserves our thanks for the success of this franchise past and present. As soon as his coaching is the reason that our team is not as competative as it can be than he will be the first to call it quits.

You might think that I am a Sloan homer, but I say you are simply fair-weather and not a true Jazz fan. I value loyalty! Find a new team, it sounds like you might make good Laker fans.

It depends what your priority is as a Jazz fan. Loyalty and thanks then keep Sloan, but if you want to win a championship then thank him and tell him to stay on the farm. Ty Corbin would make a good alternative.

I really like how you distinguish the winning of a championship by removing the notion of loyalty. Indeed, your priorities are telling. That says plenty about the folks who are so desperate for a championship that they think any change will do the trick. People like you don't want to win the right way. You want to win at any cost so that you can stroke your own ego.

Ty Corbin would make a good alternative.

Yeah, the the championships would just roll in with Corbin at the helm.

Ultimately this is true, but coaches need to put the players in the right situations for them to be successful. Substitutions, time outs and Everything must work together for the team to acheivbe the ultimate prize.

Jackson inherited the same basic talent from Del Harris and made them into champions. This was the same squad that got swept by the Jazz in the WCF two years in a row.

Players only take the shots. Coaches call the shots.
