All things Omri Casspi
Hey I'm from the raptors board but im an Israeli native that has been living in Toronto the past 9 years.
I know you guys arent too active here so im hoping that having a thread where i could get updates on how Omri Casspi is playing and what kind of expectations are being set for him is OK.
It's tough to watch Kings games up here but i will be getting on the streams when i can but otherwise id like to see what you guys think of him so far.
What style of player is he? strengths/weaknesses etc.
I saw he had a great debut stat line for a rookie but id like to know what you guys thought he did well.
Thanks

Re: All things Omri Casspi
This is the highlights of Casspi's first game of the season:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShkRuYGlXVM
I think he was awesome in his first day in the season (and preseason too). He is very tough, has a good motor and he is a surprisingly a good shooter. (I was under the assumption that he needed to improve in that aspect of his game). His defense is decent/respectable to be honest.
I'm expecting from Casspi is to adjust his game from the International level to the NBA level. And he is doing very good on that regard. Also, we are looking for a consistent performance as well. And I think Casspi can provide that. If so, it would be not long to see Casspi as a starter (small forward).
Thumbs up to Casspi.

Ill probably catch today's game on the internet

his stroke is money wow...the only things the israeli commentators kept saying is that they never saw casspi shoot like that ONCE in his whole career at maccabi and there he hit like 4 nice jumpshots already.

Yeah, he had me surprised with his barrages of jumpers throughout preseason and last game. I hope he keeps this up.

And he has had breakaways late in several games in the preseason and dunked them with poeple around. He can do a lot. He has a very balanced game.

Re: All things Omri Casspi
I also think this thread is a great idea (we only get Kings games here between 2-5am local time).
For anyone who watched the last game against the Hornets, do you have any idea why Westphal only gave Casspi 9 minutes of playing time? Was it because of the fact that Nocioni and/or Desmond Mason were playing good games or was it more to do with Omri's performance not being good? On the one hand, I don't think anyone, especiallly a rookie, should be given playing time, on the other hand, given the fact that the Kings probably aren't going to make the playoffs this year and that neither Nocioni or Desmond Mason likely figure to be in the King's long-term plans, I don't understand why Westphal wouldn't want to give his talented young players every chance to gain experience on the floor. Even if they mess up, these guys very well might be the ones who will eventually turn this franchise around.
Also, what do you guys make of his rebounding at this point? It seems weird that a 6'9" forward only grabs around 2-3rbs a game (including preseason). Is it because he isn't aggressive enough? Too weak at this point?

Casspi has impressed the socks off of me. I'm thoroughly pleased with his effort, skill-level and bball IQ. I think he's gonna be a BALLER for years to come.

Re: All things Omri Casspi
I am thrilled with Casspi thus far. He always seems to be in the right spot on the floor and is around the ball quite often looking to make a play. The guy is a flat-out playmaker. If I recall, he had a key steal late that helped us get the win. Watching him really makes me proud of the direction of what "could be".
can we just get a new arena already...

If Chuck Norris and Jack Bauer had a son together and he grew up to play basketball, his name would be Omri Casspi.

Screw you man, that's his prerogative, why would you roll your eyes at that, at least in public.

I think sl1mshad33 meant that KM44 needed to be proud of being Jewish regardless... since sl1mshad33 is located in Israel that would be the most logical answer. Regardless, Casspi is a hell of a player! I love his tenacity.

Thanks. I really just thought it was kind of a silly statement in my opinion, even if I respect each person's right to his/her opinion. I am proud of Omri, a lot of people are. At the same time, I am kind of subdued with my feelings for him since at this stage of his career, it's too early to tell what kind of player he will be in the future and how he'll contribute to the Kings. Hopefully he'll continue to improve and to help bring many wins to Sacramento.

Re: All things Omri Casspi
So I finally got to see a complete Kings game (thanks to the person who posted the complete Kings-Grizzlies game on Youtube) and here are my thoughts on Omri and on the Kings based on 1 game:
On Omri
What I Liked:
-energy/hustle/intensity
-shooting touch
-defense (or attempts to play defense)
-taking reasonable shots (not taking bad shots)
-quickness/mobility
What I Didn't Like:
-he sometimes has a tendency to run away from the basket when someone puts up a shot (he's too quick to switch in transition) instead of running towards it to try to collect the rebound
-he doesn't know where on the floor to be at times (something which will be corrected as he gains experience) and so he just runs around randomly
-foul shooting--- I think this one goes without saying (something which should improve with practice and experience)
On the Kings as a team:
I actually really enjoyed watching them play (much more than most other NBA teams, which have awful ball movement and play with one star player surrounded by a bunch of duds). They play as a team and they play kind of old-school style basketball, which I really like. I really liked John Brockman, Kevin Martin, and Spencer Hawes, in addition to Omri, of course. Tyreke should develop into a great player and I am really eager to see what he and Kevin Martin will be able to achieve together. They will be one of the best backcourts in the NBA. Jason Thompson looked good in the sense that he's not a stiff, but I think the Kings need find another physical inside player to complement Spencer (I see Brockman as an energy/hustle guy off the bench).

Anyone know if Omri is playing tonight? Or is he still sidelined with his injury?
