Do we trade Harris?

Post#1 » by Rockice_8 » Wed Nov 4, 2009 4:02 pm

Haha the tread title is a little misleading but it got your attention.

Now this is all speculation but after watching the early part of this season seems all to possible. Now I've been a die hard fan my whole life and I no this franchise is cursed but can this really happen. Seeing the CP3 thread got me thinking.

Say John Wall lives up to all the hype this college season and he's the second coming of CP3 and we land the number one pick and Wall is hands down the number selcetion, we have to take him. Harris is a point and so is Wall and neither has the jumper to transition to the SG.

So we have to trade Harris right?

We could let Wall come of the bench and learn a year but eventually Harris would need to go. Now we'll probably have the worst record in the league and end up with the 5th pick but it's just something to think about.

Let's see how everything plays out. Devin is an all-star. Yes, he won't be an all star every year, but he has all-star talent. I'm not going to think about trading him unless we're getting an all-star talent in a need position (see: PF) who is locked up long term that we can build around with our current nucleus. We also are thin at the PG position when it comes to a natural position after this season. I'm totally fine drafting Wall and having him back up Harris until he's ready to take the reigns and go. We have to remember he'll be like 19 or something. Historically, it takes 2-3 years at least for a PG THAT YOUNG to become a top tier PG, which is why I don't think trading Devin would ever become a major necessity for a while unless we can significantly upgrade another position.

Also, I really don't like John Wall. I hope he proves me wrong.

Depends on if we sign a free agent or not. I think if John Wall is there when we draft, we take him no matter what. Then, after the free agent period, if nobody signs here (I mean the big guys, not the mid-tier free agents) then Devin Harris is gone and it's John Wall's team. If we do sign a big name, then we either use John Wall and the extra capspace to fill out the bench/starters, or he's the backup point until he's clearly a better option than Harri, who would then move to the sixth man.

Here are a few scenarios

1) if we land Wall, Offer Harris and/or Dallas pick to teams that have top 5 picks to draft a PF.
2) If Lebron and Wade are not in picture, Offer Harris for a STAR SG, PF, or C.
3) If we dont get any good offers and Wall is really like CP3, we can move Harris to SG.

If the Nets land the top pick and Wall is the guy, you hold on to Harris until you know where LeBron, Wade, Bosh, etc. land.

You wouldn't want to limit your FA options by trading Harris before those guys make a decision. Also, while the idea of a 2nd top 5 pick is tempting, I can't see such a trade helping the argument to convince a LeBron or Wade to sign here.

I agree. I would do he trade for another top pick for us. I this point it is either we tank for top pick or we win for Lebron, wade or bosh. Right now I dont think we are going to win much. So getting those guys are really up to them Saying "I want to be a Net"

You guys are forgetting Harris is on a SWEET contract. If anything have him come off the bench and be our sixth man. Because Alston sucks major ass, I miss Dooling.

If we draft Wall, sign Bosh or Amar'e, then trade Harris and the Dallas pick for Granger.
Ha!
