OT: XBOX 360 or Playstation 3?

Post#1 » by bigdog13 » Thu Nov 5, 2009 3:08 pm

Hey everyone looking for some insight! My Xbox 360 took a ****. I got 3 red rings I tried to fix it but nothing works.

So now my questions is do I go and get another 360 or should I spend a little more and get the Playstation 3?

Does anyone know if the new models of the xbox 360 are having problems with the 3 rings of death or having they mad fixes?

any help would be great

I think the red ring problem has gone down a lot, but it is still an issue. Both systems are great, but I guess it all depends on you. FIrst, if you can send our 360 in still to get it fixed for free you should d that rather than spending money because you can. If you have a lot of 360 games as well, you might want to stick with that. If you can't send it in and have limited games, the ps isn't a bad bargain at $299 right now, I picked one up when I got to college because it was cheap and have both my systems in my dorm and like them both for their own reasons.

Red rings are pretty much gone. And if you already have the 360 and all the games I would stick with that, unless you plan to sell the games. Plus what do you friends have and do you play online? XBOX Live is fantastic.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I mostly use my ps3 as a media center lately and for that it's amazing. In terms of gaming, they're probably a horse a piece. Uncharted 2 is a PS3 exclusive and it's amazing. I loved Fat Princess and MLB: The Show '09 is without a doubt my favorite sports game ever.

I got one that has the newer chip set when my old one got the 3 rings of death. Sold my 1st unit to my nephew cheap and it got the rings of death once again. The new ones have the new chip set and graphics card in order to combat the rings of death. I have had mine for 2 1/2 years and everything is well.

Xbox Live is hard to beat. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is the best. Modern Warfare 2 is due next week.

I have owned both since they both came out. I played ps3 for about 1/2 hour once (resistance which they said was some great game - yeah right - game sucks) to not feel guilty about buying it and mostly use it as a bluray player. I play 360 every time I get in the gaming mood. The PS3 hardware is better yes but the 360 software that runs the hardware is way better than the PS3. Little things like the fact that the other day I had a divx movie on a usb flash drive and plugged it into the PS3 and it wouldn't play it. Plug that same drive into the 360 and it plays it right away. The PS3 sucks plain and simple, their online system sucks by comparison, and the system as a whole is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent on a gaming system.

I watch DIvx movies on my PS3 every night and never have a problem. Download them from a site I frequent and stream them directly to the PS3 over my home network.

I have both. The 360 is on the sidelines with the ring of death thing and I have been too lazy to call Microsoft. Maybe this will motivate me. I hated the Xbox controllers but the 360 has the PS3 beat hands down. Id go with the 360.

I always love these topics because everyone says that Live is the best around... but I don't understand why. It's 50 bucks a year and it now offers no advantages over the PSN (now that it has Netflix). Live and PSN are the same thing except you get to pay for one.

I did this whole analysis of the systems and game scores from MetaCritic... I know this is a shameless pimp of my blog, but I did a lot of work.

http://uselessrandomness.wordpress.com/ ... 60-vs-ps3/

The only real disadvantage either system has is the RROD, which has not been fixed like people are saying that it has. It happens less on the new models, but still happens. The X-box 360 has a 54% failure rate over the course of it's lifespan. That is just horrible for expensive electronic items.

I also use the media streaming feature often like DB, but I think the 360 has similar functionality as well.

BL, I was hoping you'd spot this thread.

To me it comes down to the exclusives, because the systems are basically the same. They play movies and music, they have an online marketplace, both will do Netflix, both allow online gaming (though one you have to pay for).

PS3
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Demon's Souls
Killzone 2
MLB ’09: The Show
Ratchet & Clank : A Crack In Time
Infamous

360
Forza Motorsport 3
Halo 3 ODST
Halo Wars
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

Personally I like the PS3 exclusives a lot more, but whatever.

That was the argument I was trying to make in my blog post, because I thought that PS3 exclusives would beat 360 exclusives in metacritic scores. That wasn't the case when when I wrote my post, but I think once I update it the exclusives will favor the PS3 heavily for this year.

And I always like to remind people, I am using MetaCritic scores, not my personal opinion and not the opinion of one site. MetaCritic factors in dozens of sites reviews.

So, yes, I truly believe that it comes down to exclusives and I think the PS3 has the better line up now and going into the future.

Next year the PS3 should have Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III by the 2nd quarter. Both of those are big time system sellers. No disrespect to Forza (it's a great game), but GT is the series most people are waiting for when it comes to racing. Over 1,000 cars, realistic damage models and now a track editor.

There are also some issues with current 360 exclusives. It looks like Mass Effect 2 is PS3 bound and there are a lots of questions about the GTA Episodes coming to the PS3 as well. Splinter Cell's developers have been very non-committal as well.

Again, both excellent systems but I think that the future looks much brighter for the PS3 than the 360.

I just really love video games and this is a discussion that flames messages boards across the net. My idea was to look at thinks from a more statistical point of view instead of "My System is Better Than Yours". I just wanted to see how the game libraries stacked up and it's really, really close.

I'd go with the PS3. I've had 3 xbox 360's all ending with the red ring of death. I got tired of it and bought a PS3. I've never been this happy with a gaming console than I am now with the PS3. They have great exclusives and the PS3 network is slowly becoming great for online play, oh yea and its FREE! Its also a great media entertainment center. I started buying Blu Ray movies and I won't go back to regular dvd's. Plus it'll convert your old dvd's to better quality as well.

Its really up to you though. I was in your shoes 3 times, and kept giving Xbox another chance, but it only let me down. I finally switched and am content now.

To me, it completely depends on which exclusives you want to play. If the 360's exclusives are your thing, then go that route. For me personally, it's the PS3 and it's not close. 360's exclusives either do nothing for me or are ported to the PC or PS3 (Mass Effect, Bioshock). PS3's exclusives have been right up my alley. For a recent example, I can't imagine not having played Uncharted 2. Game was jaw-dropping. And DB mentioned it, but The Show is a cannot-miss for baseball fans. Blu-Ray player is a sweet bonus.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Mass Effect 2 ended up on the PS3 at some point (which would be nice because then I wouldn't have to upgrade my PC's video card :P ). Bioware's exclusive ME licensing agreement with Microsoft is over, and EA is their publisher now. Well EA likes to put everything anywhere that they can. I'm sure Bioware will attest to that with the recent release of Dragon Age, which started off as just a PC game but was adapted to the consoles. And I suppose it wouldn't hurt that now they have their feet wet with the development tools.

That number applies to the ones that have broken down already. But of the old ones its like 28%. The new ones are less than 4%.
