OT - SportsSouth HD

Post#1 » by evildallas » Wed Nov 4, 2009 4:30 pm

My rant:
Before the season I saw a press release that 60 Atlanta games would be shown in HD this season. Although I attend most home games that increase caused much rejoicing. The Lakers game Sunday was in clearly in beautiful HD even if the result was ugly. Last night I got to see SportsSouth version of HD and I was a little saddened. It was broadcast in HD, but shot with older standard def equipment. The end result was big bars on the side of the picture due to the difference in aspect ratio and a less than crisp picture quality and detail. I guess I shouldn't complain as the standard definition signal for SportsSouth on Comcast was almost unwatchable the last couple years reminding me of watching a weak signal from a rabbit ears antenna. This by comparison is a step up, but it still isn't the beautiful HD signal I saw on the FoxSports telecast Sunday night.

What's it going to take for SportsSouth to invest in some HD cameras? I assume the prices have come down given the proliferation of HD broadcasting these days. Is viewership too low? Give me a target. Of course if viewership was higher another network might buy the rights to it.

Am I being too sensitive? Does this pseudo-HD bother anyone else? Let me know.

Maybe SportSouth had some overall production issues last night? I noticed that they didn't do an edition of Hawks Live after the game and the usual studio crew of Jerome/Stinger weren't around either.

After the game they could wait to get to another one of those "In there own words" retrospective shows on (Phil Ford), so no postgame show again. Leads me to believe this is a trend not an aberration.

They don't have two camera crews for NBA games, do they? Because, I would bet that the game was broadcast in true HD in Portland.

NBA league pass this year is broadcasting feeds from both teams networks, and for some reason some cities like Charlotte, Memphis, and Atlanta choose to broadcast in standard definition on their HD channel. For example, when Memphis played Sacramento, and Charlotte played NJ, New Jersey and Sacramento broadcast the games in HD and Charlotte's and Memphis broadcast in standard definition.

The Atlanta games are blacked out on league pass, but I'm fairly certain that our games that were in standard definition in Atlanta, were in full HD in Sacramento and Portland. I find it disgusting that the games are available in HD, but for some reason our network decides to only broadcast in standard definition. High Definition basketball is a much better product, and it is available.

It is pathetic that we don't get every game in HD. Even OKC broadcasts all of their games in HD. I think we should write letters, or boycott or something. I'm pissed.

Saturday's home game was full HD, so SportsSouth has the capability. Why not always give us the best looking product?
