Victory Cigar Nets 11/6. Even an Embarrassing Win is a Win
For me - Truth vs Rondo
Truth: In only 30 min and on only 8 shots, 16 points on 62% shooting, 7 assists (2 of them things of beauty to KG), 2 steals and 1 block - especially in Q3 when it was tight game
Rondo: 16 points and about 4 of each for rebounds, assists and steals - especially in Q3
Honorable mention to Scal for 2 clutch 3s in Q4 to help break it open
I vote Rondo
Comments: KG and Sheed and Ray (until the very end when he hit 2 clutch shots) were awful. I do not expect this again very soon. Mark my words: We will go back to championship level play against Hawks and Jazz this week.
Biscuit boy is on ignore forever. Someone else can deal with his ALWAYS WRONG predictions of losses at half time and in general, his baseless irrational pathologic negativity, and how we could never possibly beat the Tragic and the Fakers, etc. I will not let this creature spoil my joy as we march to Number 18. Constructive realistic criticism is one thing - constant irrational disgusting negativity is a different matter.

i voted scal as he made some shots to keep us in the game. There were not any good choices here. Against a decent team this would be an embarrassing loss. Luckily it was against the depleted nets.

Rondo kept the Celtics in the game for the first 3 quarters, and Doc embarrasses him by making him ride the bench for the whole 4th quarter?
I think it's awful.
Rondo provided almost all the energy [except for Sheldon], early, he worked his butt off... and thats how Doc rewards him. .....

Never thought I'd see the day Scalabrine got a victory cigar in a game that's not a blowout.

Ray. The shots he hit in the 4th sealed the deal.

Really wanted to go with Shelden, man I love how he's been playing and how I was soooo wrong about him. Keep ballin kiiiiiiid!
So I went with Scal instead. Here's my promo: Are you an end of the bench guy? Do you come in, hustle, and make a few contributions in an otherwise ugly game in which no one is really putting their stamp on it? You sir, shall be the recipient of DunkOnFace's official victory cigar tally! Congrats, Mr. Scalabrine, and may there be many more, good sir!!! Godspeed.

We looked really, really bad. But a win is a win, so I will take it. I am just glad we have 4 days off now. Playing 8 games in 12 days is ridiculous...
For victory cigar I am going with Scal! He turned the momentum our way...

Man, Don't even waste your breath on this guy. He is a wolves fan and a Rondo fan. Not a Celtics fan. Which explains a lot when you read his posts.
Plus, If you quote him. Then I have to read the garbage that comes out of his mouth.

I voted for Scal because his shots were a huge momentum shift in the game. He provided the team with the boost that was needed.

It's not that simple. House had his 2nd 0-fer in a row (though he did get to the line on a bogus call, netting 2 points), and didn't do anything out there of note. With House on the floor, and no Daniels, Pierce became the point guard down the stretch. It was Pierce's play (and Ray and Scal's shotmaking) that accounted for that +/-. House continues to be an inconvenience more than anything else...
The thing with Rondo is not only about Alston laying off him, it's that the rest of the offense was just standing around...there was no movement, no picking, no nothing. Rondo kept the game within reach and put out a ton of energy on the defensive end to help spark the Cs in the 3rd. But, it was a question of a lack of chemistry/energy between Rondo and the other Four starters versus putting the ball in Paul's hand and surrounding him with shooters. It's easier to sub one guy (Rondo) and put the ball in Paul's hands (especially against a poor-defending Nets team), than it is to keep Rondo on the court and sub out the other Four (or hope they find the energy). Rondo had the energy but nobody else did--so Doc rode Rondo in the 3rd and then transitioned into a slow-it-up offense with Paul at point in the 4th...and it worked because the Nets suck.
That said, Doc could/should have put Rondo back in down the stretch. Alston was getting by House with ease, only to miss the same shots he was making in the 1st half. For a team that simply needed to make stops to win the game down the stretch, I thought Doc got scared and conservative by riding House to end the game. It's not like he was doing anything on either end...
One last thing: on nights like these, when the team is obviously tired, not running its sets or executing on offense, Rondo needs to understand that HE has to provide the energy...instead of slowing down because no one's running with him, or instead of 'running' the offense when it's clear that tired legs are bogging things down, Rondo needs to put the onus on himself, getting to the rim, getting out in transition and using his energy and young legs to will the team to victory. Rondo actually did do that last night, but mostly on the defensive end and not enough on the offensive end. To make the transition to the best point in the league, Rondo needs to know when HE has to take over the game on the offensive end and then go about doing it. Last night was one of those nights where he could have scored 30 and should have...and once the Nets changed their defense to stop his penetration, THEN he could have went back to a facilitating role. Rondo, sometimes at least, seems to be so set on facilitating that he ignores other ways to win a game...though I don't know if that's Rondo's doing or Doc's 'coaching.'
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

I voted for Scal also. Ray and Pierce didn't do enough to deserve it. Ray did get hot and carried us in the 4th after Scalabrine set the tone in the 3rd. Rondo was bench in the 4th because of that one play where he took his time bringing the ball up the court, failed to set the offense, and took a 26 foot 3 as the clock was expiring. That was one of the worst plays/lack of effort I've seen in a while.
Scalarine hit two key shots and his defense was great. Scalabrine was a spark off the bench that when needed.

Celtics fan base really needs to stop liking Scal just because he is fat and red headed..if I had not watched the game, I would think he put up 32 and 12 reading some of the posts here..gee..put Shelden Williams in his position, and this cigar EASILY goes to Rondo or Ray..

I agree with everything you said, but I DON"T put the onus on Rondo. I put it on Doc. Doc has to tell Rondo to take it to the hoop and push the pace. If it doesn't come from Doc, then the Big 3 get upset with Rondo for not getting them their touches.
Rondo kept the Celtics in the game in the first half with steals. The Celtics had 15, of which Rondo had 5 and he created most of the others.
The Nets are a bad team. Doc could get away with sitting Rondo against a depleted Nets team. But against the Suns, the best way to win was to have Rondo driving and layup or dish, Nash can't cover Rondo. Nash sits with fouls and Phoenix loses rather than wins. Instead the Celtics played their "normal" offense, with the boys throwing up (literally) 3's from the perimeter with tired legs.
Doc is afraid to tell the Big 3 that its now a Big 4 and Rondo is the driver. Until Doc tells his team, that winning is more important than their touches, there will be more nights like the Phoenix game.
Again, think about what happened against the NETS. They are a bad team, missing Harris, Yi, Douglas-Roberts and Lee, and they still played us even for most of the game. To me thats frightening.

Bottom line is you expect Pierce and Ray to play well. They are stars and they didn't step up. 16 from Pierce isn'y enough, and neither is 12 from Ray. Everyone on this team underachieved in this game, except for Scalabrine and Shelden Williams. His two baskets came at a time when we needed them. And he played great defense. And that clear path foul was some B.S. Scal was ahead of that play.
