I think the transition to the 3-4 is going to take longer than the Packers had hoped. Or maybe they knew it would be tough this year but decided to live with it.

But I watched two teams that run the 3-4 well last night and the Packers just can't match them athletically off the edges. The Packers don't have multiple guys like Woodley, Harrison, Timmons and Dumerville. Matthews could be one of those guys. He pops out. But none of the other linebackers do.

This next offseason it would be nice to acquire a pair of tackles and another OLB. I think it would make a world of difference.

I think he hurts a lot... Teams know that he doesn't want to cover and that he wants to rush the passer pretty much every down.

The reason why Matthews could be so good is because he has the speed and ability to rush the passer, while at the same time being able to drop back into coverage... So the offenses never really knows what to expect from that side. I'm not saying we have to get another guy as good as Matthews is at that age (because I think Matthews has been pretty damn good for a rookie), but we need to get versatile players at the LB position, IMO.

Apparently the Gravedigger ripped McCarthy on a radio show today. I love Gilbert Brown.

I think it's very feasible to land Holmgren, Cowher, or Gruden without giving them the GM gig. Holmgren has a history with TT. I've said it like three or four times now but if TT remains the GM, Holmgren would make the most sense to me as a head coach. Shannahan seems like a guy that loves power, so I'm not so sure if he'd come along as just a head coach. Of course I don't have a problem giving him the GM gig, but I think TT will be safe after this year.

Nor should he be. He's been completely invisible unless he's getting burned in coverage. I just hope we can get something for him. My hope is a 3rd.

I see the Packers doing a franchise then trade deal with Kampman. I just wish he still had another year on his contract after this year so we could avoid the franchise tag and maybe get more for him.

Fans got to caught up in scheme and not enough on the players. The 3-4 like any defense can get picked apart with not enough or right talent, just look at the Browns. We might need a MLB also that has some blitzing skills because Hawk doesn't and the team obviously doesn't trust playing Bishop. Capers love blitzing his middle backers and sending AJ is a waste of time unless he is completely unblocked because he has no ability to come close to beating a lineman or back if picked up.

I could live with Holmgren coming back and TT as GM. Although I think Holmgren would be more in charge given his resume. It would be like Seattle again where TT does the scouting/player personnel work and Holmgren has the final call on moves. I can't see Holmgren coming back here though. He's made more money than he knows what to do with at this point.

I agree with it for the most part, but think it's a near lock that it's only a matter of when Rodgers makes a Pro Bowl and i think fairly soon Finley will make it also if he stays healthy. One part in it fits most about how i feel about Thompson

Since Thompson was hired in January 2005 as the general manager, his philosophy has been to build a winning organization through the draft and by resigning his own players.

For the most part, Thompson has stayed in the shallow end of the pool when it comes to free agency and trades.

That philosophy certainly can work if your drafts are among football's finest year in and year out. But a major reason the Packers are 4-4 this season and just 35-37 during Thompson's tenure is his drafting has been nothing more than mediocre.

Thompson has conducted Green Bay's last five drafts, and here are the results:

• Thompson has selected 51 players.

• Thirty four of Thompson's picks are still either on the roster or the practice squad (66.7%)

• Ten of Thompson's picks are currently starters (19.1%).

• And as Collins stated, he's the only Thompson draft pick to have played in a Pro Bowl (2.0%).

Compared to some other general managers around the league, Thompson's draft record isn't bad. The problem is, it isn't special either.

And considering Thompson's apathy toward free agency and trades, he needs to hit home runs in the draft.

Not to mention, Jennings has a pro bowl caliber year and wasn't rewarded either.

That year, Driver was. Who deserves any accolade he gets, but Jennings' had the better numbers if memory serves me correctly.

By the end of his fifth year on the job, Wolf had been to the playoffs four times, won a Super Bowl and played in two NFC Championship Games. Right now, Thompson has one playoff appearance in four seasons and faces long odds to reach the postseason this year.

Wolf wasn't perfect (re-signing freeman for that ridiculous contract as one example or the John Michaels pick) but it all comes down to wins and loses.
