What's going on in Minnesota?

Post#1 » by Andrew McCeltic » Wed Nov 11, 2009 7:12 pm

They're in shuffle mode - two point guards brought in by the new GM, two power forwards brought in by the old GM - a fantasy that they'll be able to attract a top free agent this off-season (Minnesota: Not As Cold As Toronto!) - is it entirely crazy to think we could make a bid for Al Jefferson? He's not a center and if the Wolves keep losing he's going to get a Zach Randolph rep - empty stats.

How do we possibly get him? Is he going to come off the bench for us?! with Sheed?

It's not happening, as much as I would like him back as well.

How'd the Lakers get Gasol? It's not impossible - the ideal outcome would be that Al plays behind Garnett and Wallace for a couple of years and learns to win/play defense, getting more minutes if/as KG declines..

Why would we want him? He is no longer a high schooler with potential. He is in his prime - and the fact is he still gives up more points defensively than he scores. He just isn't that good.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

This is crazy talk. Let's focus on maintaining our championship contending team rather than pining for our former binkies in Minny.

At some point a KG for Jefferson trade might make sense. When KG has a year left perhaps. It wouldn't be a terrible way to end things.

I think the real talk about Minny should be in regards to Gomes. They might not pick up his option so they can offer a Max contract. If we could split the MLE on Gomes and MD that would be fantastic. We'd have Rondo, MD, Gomes, Baby and Perk all signed long term (well assuming we sign Baby.) Not bad for a team that is supposedly so old. That line up would be a stat away from being top tier.

Gomes is an average NBA player, probably not a starter on a championship team. (Think Luke Walton)

There is zero chance Minny trades Al Jefferson for KG, zero chance.

I was thinking more like Ray for Jefferson/Gomes

Has nothing to do with 'binkies' - Minnesota is actively seeking trades, apparently interested in 2010 free agents, and has two power forwards - one on a rookie contract, the other making much more money as the leading scorer on a so far awful team

It is impossible if your GM wants to win. Kahn wants to win, Wallace (via Heisley) wants to make money. Ray for Big Al and Gomes? Please. Why would Minny trade its best player back to the C's for less of a return? If you're looking for a team desperate to shed costs consider Memphis, Sacramento, LAC, Milwaukee or Charlotte.

A more realistic trade (although I doubt either team would do it) is this: Big Al, Rubio for Rondo, Perk. Kahn is only interested in talented youth to round-out the rotation, not aging vets.

I actually think Minni is only one good trade away from having a really nice core to build around. I've always backed the theory of collecting as much talent as possible and drafting with the BPA strategy when your that far away. Once your picks start to show something and increase their value it'll be easy to send out young players on cheap contracts. Right now they just need to identify who they want to move foward with and pick some targets to trade for. Love + Rubio's rights + pick should return an all-star especially since they'll be under the cap this summer they won't have to send back a bad contract.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Minnesota has colder winters then Toronto. Heck Boston probably has worse winters then Toronto as well.
