I don't know man...M Gasol is looking pretty good offensively AND defensively, and pretty healthy...

and wasn't Sun Yue preferred by the Grizz to Marc?

Also Atkins being shipped could never be a bad thing for Kwame or anyone. Dude was a worthless cancer. Caron on the other hand... but Kwame's expiring became alot of Pau.

Bad moves:
Unable to add any meaningful pieces to the Shaq-Kobe 3 peat team (seriously, how bad was our PF rotation and bench back then?);
Drafting Brian Cook over Barbosa, Perkins, Mo Williams and Josh Howard;
Drafting Vujacic over Varejao and Chris Duhon;
Drafting Von Wafer over Monta Ellis, and then let go of Wafer after one season;
Signing Radmanovich;

Good moves:
Drafting Andrew Bynum;
Traded for Trevor Ariza;
Signing Ron Artest;
Drafting Marc Gasol

I wish Mitch would have given up Sun Yue and a little something extra so that we could have kept Marc. The dude is a beast, and wait until next season when Z-bo is gone from Memphis-Baaaaad Mitch

Memphis would never have done that, and it got us Pau, which got us a ring, hopefully multiple. Not a bad move.

The opposite. You're remembering our board's wishes, but IIRC Mitch came out and said they wanted Gasol not Yue.

Though Marc was always a great pick by Mitch. Steal if you ask me. Though Pau is exactly what this Laker team needed.

As for the Caron thing...love him (and yeah, the Pau trade in hindsight was for the best), but Caron is injury prone, IMO.

yup, SHOULD HAVE kept marc gasol over sun yue....i dont know why mitch didnt even think that having 2 brothers on the same team would be tremendous for us....
and also, that may have made andrew bynum expandable...maybe traded him for a prolific point guard (chauncey billups?)

Well, in a perfect world, and by the logic of some posters, Mitch Kupchak should have selected Michael Redd (#43) over Mark Madsen (#29) in the 2000 draft.

The Lakers also sold the 27th pick in 2001 to New York. Could've selected Tony Parker (#28) and even Gilbert Arenas (#31).

Hell, the Spurs owned the Lakers 55th in 2002 pick who flipped it for Luis Scola. Of course who knows if Mitch would have selected Scola--but that is the mastermind that is R.C. Buford. But that same mastermind sent Scola packing for V. Spanoulis, who never played for the Spurs--and released a month later. Big mistake. Back to the Lakers' other misfortunes. Lakers also selected 1-game-playoff-hero Kareem Rush (#20) ahead of Tayshaun Prince (#23)(who later would haunt the Lakers in the 2004 NBA finals) and even C. Boozer (#34).

Ughh headaches...i will continue at another time... :cry:

incorrect. grizz wanted BOTH marc AND sun yue (ref)

You can't have these discussions with players until after you draft them really and initially when they were drafted they were thinking that they would be Lakers last year (2007-08), but the more we talked to them about the roster and encouraging them to stay overseas for a year, they realized that would probably be the best thing for them as well. Of course we traded Marc Gasol when we got Pau, his brother, and I think Marc is going to be a good player. European players are different, so he's going to have to prove it this year, but I think he has a chance to play in this league for years to come. Memphis also wanted Sun in the trade, but we wanted to keep at least one of those 2 guys so Memphis wanted Marc and we are happy that we were able to keep Sun Yue, because we liked him when we drafted him. Ronnie Lester went to Singapore in January to watch him play and indicated that he would continue to be considered a prospect, as he played well.

mitch convinced grizz to take only marc, since grizz wanted at least kwame's expiring, marc and one of farmar/critt along with 2 1sts

man, that caron for kwame thing whilst totally backfiring, was still a calculated gamble. caron was still an unknown asset, kwame was still a previous #1 draft pick with potential, it made sense the way our roster was built to get a young big man. what occurred in the 2-3 years following that trade made every laker fan gag and want to choke mitch

@OP:

signing radmanovich BAD, flipping him for ammo and brown GOOD
signing cookie monster BAD, flipping him for ariza GOOD
making kobe feel betrayed by management by not building a championship level team BAD, waiting out kobe's anger until bynum developed GOOD

Bad: signing Mckie/Rad, resigning Sasha/Luke.
Good: Not trading Kobe when he was upset with the team.

u realise signing mckie lead to having his (early) bird rights, which helped balance salaries in the gasol trade right??

The money tied up in Luke, Sasha, Ammo, is ridiculous. Oh well.

^ Ammo actually saved us money compared to Radmanovic. He'll be gone this summer, whereas we'd have been stuck with Radmanovic for two more years.

No excuse for the other two, though, other than the fact they both played pretty decent in contract years. There isn't a GM alive who hasn't gotten suckered by a few of those.

///

I understand that Marc is turning into a nice player, but that move put us back over the top. No way it can be considered anything but a great -- not good, GREAT -- move for us.

Hindsight is 20/20. If Memphis wanted Sun, they would have gotten him. Bottom line is, we expected more from Yue just 2 years ago, who really only got booted because we were too deep at his position with no money. And we didn't necessarily expect much from Marc at the time, because Phil wasn't going to play him until the next season to really project he'd be as good as he became. Without Pau, we don't secure two straight #1 seeds, or even one Finals appearance. I wouldn't trade that for anything. Not even tinkering with who we let go for a guy we eventually waived.

I mean, I wouldn't have minded both Gasol's terrorizing every frontcourt in the league looking back now. But I think we're still deep as is. Artest, Odom, Bynum, Gasol, and Powell? That's just ridiculous.
