Week 9 (Oct. 25-27) thread

Post#1 » by Icness » Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:07 am

Some very big games this week, should be a nice football weekend...

Thursday game:
Boston College at Virginia Tech. The winner is almost guaranteed a BCS berth barring a major upset to Virginia or GT down the line. The Hokies have become a much more well-rounded team since Tyrod Taylor took over at QB. He's banged up, which means the statue called Sean Glennon might match up against Matt Ryan. Tech will also be without superb ILB Vince Hall, but they still have their special teams magic and a very opportunistic defense. BC has tended to play to the level of competition for better and worse. They'll need their "A" game if they want to keep their national title hopes alive in Blacksburg.

Sat. Games:
USC at Oregon. See the thread.

South Florida at UConn. Both these teams are ranked and the Huskies could really solidify their Big East title hopes with a win. How does USF handle coming off a tough loss, and can Grothe solve what has become a very stout Husky defense.

Florida-Georgia. Winner stays alive in the SEC East, loser is looking at a pre-XMas bowl game against a crappy Big 10 or Big 12 team. Tim Tebow is banged up, which might limit his running.

Kansas at Texas A&M. The undefeated Jayhawks survived their trip to Colorado, but College Station is a different kind of monster. A&M runs the ball on everyone, but Kansas has shown a tough run defense and an opportunistic pass defense. A&M got bombed by Miami but has been very good at home, and Kansas hasn't won a road game against any school with "Texas" in its name (except North Texas) in almost 20 years.

Ohio State at Penn State. Can the Buckeyes keep the upset bug at bay in a place where they traditionally get stomped? The Lions are very good at home but have almost no ability to come from behind, and nobody owns the first quarter like the #1 scarlet and grey.

South Carolina at Tennessee. One of those "somethings gotta give" games: Spurrier owns Tennessee, but Phil Fullmer owns the Cocks. The maddening Vols have shown they can beat anyone but also get trashed by anyone, while the "other" USC still controls its own fate in the SEC East.

Hawaii at New Mexico State (Sunday). Fairly dangerous mainland trip for Hawaii. Neither team plays a lick of defense, so if you like watching your buddies play Madden, this is the game for you!

California at Arizona State. First real test for the Sun Devils, the beginning of a brutal stretch that could see the current unbeatens not win another game. Cal has lost two in a row and they've not done well in close games (despite the Oregon game this year), and these teams are almost identical statistically.

West Virginia at Rutgers. The Mountaineers are quietly clawing their way back up the BCS standings, and a quality win against a game Rutgers team still fighting for respect might go a long way come January.

Richmond at James Madison. Huge Atlantic 10 game for you DI-AA fans. The inexplicable loss to Towson by the Spiders takes some of the luster away, but these two rivals are both among the very best Championship Subdivision programs.
San Diego at Dayton. Good I-AA matchup between two teams that would be competitive against most lower-rung I-A schools.

Not much to get excited about...I think that even Notre Dame can beat Arizona. Should (better) be a cake-walk for the Huskies.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

Let's not say things we can't take back. I'm worried we'll lose to BYE this weekend.

Doesn't this week have 3 or 4 ranked matchups? Should be intense.

Can't wait for the Cocktail Party. It's either going to be a close competitive game or a blow out in Florida's favor. For whatever reason we just can't beat Florida. Should have beaten them the last two years. It's going to be even harder this year with such an inexperienced team. A win Saturday would do wonders for Georgia's confidence and I think it would propel us into the SEC Championship game.

Have fun, wish I was there. Unfortunately I have to go to the Big House to watch Michigan destroy Minnesota. That's just sad on so many levels for me...

I do think the Buckeyes will win as long as they take care of the ball. Michigan State has a much better offense than PSU and the Buckeyes dominated them except for that one awful minute of two turnovers. It's games like this one where I wish Tressel would open it up and try to score 40, but he's content to win 24-21.

Huge game for Willingham, they've lost 5 in a row to real good teams and havent been able to get that signature win, there's already questions about whether he can recruit here and i think there is a question whether he's a good game coach.

BC is still undefeated. I gotta buy a lottery ticket ASAP.
First the federal government borrowed money; then gave the money to Bank of America; then I borrowed some of that money from Bank of America and gave it to the federal government; then the federal government gave the money back to Bank of America.

Boy, talk about a letdown for VA Tech. They won't drop far in the polls, but they should've had this one.

Poor Hokies--2 losses, both to teams ranked #2. Of course the LSU game was an ugly blowout. It was painful to watch VT lose because of special teams and the puzzling decision to not pressure Ryan--if you're gonna drop 8 in coverage you darn well better not let a guy get that open in the end zone :nonono:

Okay, I admit I really don't like Boston College. But I can't shake the feeling that this team just isn't that good. Does anyone think they could hang with LSU, Florida, Oregon, Oklahoma or USC? I don't think they'd beat Kentucky or Michigan at this point either in my opinion. The ACC is pretty shoddy this year and I have a feeling they're going to get destroyed in whatever BCS game they play in.

Except for UCLA, BC's the closest game ND has played this year. They're just so unimpressive for a #2 ranked team.

10 - 0 going into the 4th and I decided to watch a movie. Great game and I missed even a better game during the 4th.
